The HIV rates among sex workers in the Dominican Republic run three to 10 times higher than in the general population. Now some women in the region are uniting to take a stand against the virus. Reporter Antigone Barton and videojournalist Steve Sapienza explore how sex workers are striving to educate others in the business on the dangers of the virus and the importance of using protection. This report is part of Pulitzer Center-sponsored project "Heroes of HIV: HIV in the Caribbean " (bit.ly/w1AyVw).
This had me crying.. I just feel so bad because we usually are quick to judge people who do prostitution and sex work.. when to be honest with you.. sometimes they have no choice.🥺 A lot of them don’t even want to do it, but they have no choice because they need to quickly support themselves, their kids and family. It’s just so sad.. hearing stuff like this is just one of the many reasons why I want to travel to these countries to help. A lot of people will say “get a real job”

I graduated high school and college, and I’m in the United States and it is STILL difficult for me to get a “regular” job .. so could you imagine the ones in foreign countries with no help, no money, no education, no transportation , no support and etc??

I prayyy🙏🏻 that life gets better for these workers. I get it & i hate it. I hate it for them. The ladys speaking about work in the prevention of HIV & living where life is much harder than it is for us, seem to have an attitude that is so positive like nothing I’ve seen before.
