    I found an abandoned baby Cardinal in the middle of the street. Circumstances prevented me from leaving him so I took him home, expecting him to die within 2 days. That was over 2 months ago. We have released him numerous times. However he keeps coming back. I do a daily Facebook post that has over 300 readers. One of his “fans” gave him a massive cage that is in our sunroom. The doors stay open and he enters and exits as he wishes. He is perched on my iPad as I’m typing this. I think he plans to stay.

      He wouldn't leave because he "imprinted" on you. Before a certain age, if they lose their mums, they'll bond strongly to a surrogate and suddenly, you have a child. It's a mechanism of survival.
      What's his FB page?

    Truly incredible footage. Thank you so much for sharing with us! We were fortunate to be able to see the nest of a Cardinal family through an upstairs window, but were unable to get a good look at the fledglings. It was fascinating to watch the parents take turns feeding them. We noticed when the male was finished, he'd call his "wife" & wait for her before leaving. We never heard the female sing. We were so fascinated by the whole process that of course, we had to do some research to learn more! Thank you, again!

    I went out to my garden shed where cardinals had built their nest in my hanging basket. Protected them as much as I could, kept cats away made it virtually impossible for anything to get in there but a bird I didn't even go into the garden shed for about three weeks. This is really my studio....and progress on everything had to cease by golly we got baby birds being made in there. Been watching the babies for probably 11 days, the garden shed is virtually surrounded by Mexican sunflowers and my garden with feeders water and every thing to accommodate a bird and their family (what bird could ask for more) I enjoyed working in my garden listening to the parents talk about what they are going to feed the younguns so to speak. Went out today and peaked through the screen, THEIR GONE..... :( First I was petrified that something ate them.... But I am sure that momma and daddy has taken them to higher ground. UGH its hard being a God Cardinal parent.....

      How did you exclude predators? Methods? What kinds of predators did you think could get in anyways?

    • @tracyheath6076
      @tracyheath6076 3 года назад +2

      @@tnynfox1669 Thick plastic fencing was stapled to all openings. and pieces of wood stashed in any corners with holes etc. The baby birds greatest enemy when being in that type of area would be possums and rat snakes which can climb trees and about anything except metal and glass. Of course in the tree nest they have many more predators.

    • @tnynfox1669
      @tnynfox1669 3 года назад +1

      Tracy Heath how many chicks? Where did they go upon fledging? Were they able to immediately leave the shed?
      What sort of openings did the shed have? Was the plastic fencing useful?

    • @tracyheath6076
      @tracyheath6076 3 года назад +4

      @@tnynfox1669 There were 5 chicks. I saw them often with their parents around the garden after they left. My garden is very dense with Mexican sunflowers, and the shed is covered with Jasmine and Rose of sharon vines, I also have many large oaks that umbrella much of the garden so many hiding places. I feed the cardinals for years in the garden in the same place and I was blessed to be able to see the babies eat at the feeder when they got older. I didnt not see any tearing of the fencing so I am pretty sure that worked. There was a way for the momma to leave the nest with her babies safely as the door was opened early in the mornings and closed at night. I don't believe there was a threat to the babie during the day because of so much human activity during the day. The night time was when they were vulnerable. Hope that helps

I’ve had a cardinal practically live in my backyard for 3 years now, I feed it etc, but I never know where he has his nests unfortunately, I would love to, he has a mate too, and sometimes I don’t see her for awhile so it’s possible their nest is out of my line of sight in the backyard. Anyways- my whole point in sending this message here was to ask you how your cardinals fared! Did any successfully fledge to your knowledge? That must have been exciting! I’m jealous

    Would like to know where they made the nest. What kind of bush/tree. I found a young one yesterday and the parents were around and mad/anxious, but I couldn’t find the nest. I know they often nest lower in protected bushes, but it was well hidden. Baby was probably around 7 or 8 days old. Took to a rehabber so hopefully he makes it!
