- The complete nesting is shown in this video from the moment of bird laying the first egg to the chick leaving the nest. Despite the cat attack on the nest and partial destruction of the clutch, the mother bird continues incubation. The mother bird's perseverance is rewarded this time with the success - one chick fledging. Last days in the nest chick was rather energetic and almost fell out of the nest several times during feeding sessions. Furthermore, the chick choked with an over-sized cherry. At last day, the chick simply fell down the ledge. However, I recorded both parents in the backyard feeding and caring for the chick two weeks later.
The story of this blackbird is hard and impressive. This is the second clutch this year. All of the chicks of the first clutch died supposedly due to the lack of food among the factors (watch here: • From Birth to Death: 6... ). Last year all 3 clutches were unsuccessful for this bird. At least the 3rd clutch last year was filmed and it was a magpie who attacked the nest twice resulting in destroying one egg and, later, predating a 9 day old chick. The video will be posted on the channel soon. Stay tinned.
This nest is located just below the roof which is, as far as I know, an uncommonly high location for a blackbird nest. Such a choice is not without assistance from my side. Last year the bird placed the nest in an inconvenient place in the shed. I made a shelf close to the roof in the shed and moved the nest there. The bird did not abandon the nest and continued nesting. Shortly after the hatching the nest was emptied. Not sure of the reasons. But after that the bird continued with her nesting attempts not on the shelf I made but on the ledge in the shed which was on the same height.
So this video films the first successful clutch out of 5 for this bird in the last 2 years.

In this case, seems only 1 adult present. Did you check out the cherries?? She was ramming a few down like loading a cannon ball.

I love how Blackbird Mama takes aim and CRAMS food into baby's mouth with one go.
I think it is because there is only one chick. The previous time when there were 4, it was not so easy to hit the target :)

Thanks :) honestly, I was getting upset that I did not see the chick after fledging for some time. I thought that fox or cat might eat it. But then I noticed the parents with the food in their beaks jumping around and disappearing in the hedge…

It is indeed the case. But I recorded this bird two times this year and it looks like it is this particular bird’s usual way that she takes care of the chicks alone. Rather strange.

In my country Blackbirds lay 4+ eggs and both female and male stay on the eggs and both actively feed the chick's, it's more commun to find nests with 4+ eggs than just 2/1...
Seems these birds usually lay 2, it's a very small nest. 3 chicks would be a madhouse. And with no help from dad, trouble ahead.
I found it fascinating that when the first egg cracked she knew it had been tampered with, but when the second egg cracked she knew it was hatching ….
Isn't that remarkable!?! Nature is such a wonder! I'm a believer that God created all things & did so perfectly. Leaves us in awe at how intricate He created each & every species so perfect, with such instinct.

Cuz the chick emit sounds from inside the egg 1 or 2 days before hatching so the parent know the embryo is alive and continue to do so until/while hatching😉😉
