I would advocate the XD+ purely because of the bluetooth. It makes it easier to set up multiple controllers for gaming. The issue with the shoulder buttons wasting battery is something I didn't even know about. I'd just turn off the system. It doesn't take long, most of the emulators will save state when you exit out... in fact I don't know of one that won't save state when you exit out. It doesn't take long to boot up anyway. If you are in a scenario where you have time to play a game, it really won't matter. One note I will say about the system, I'm not sure if the regular XD has this issue though. Is that some TVs won't recognize plugging it into the HDMI port, you can fix this with a splitter. I've had one of those splitters that has a toggle not work. I found another one that does work that is one of those where it's just a small box that has 1 in port and 2 out ports. Other than that if that is what you want it to do, as in play on a TV and multiple controllers. The XD+ is my choice for an option. As well as it plays PSP and Dreamcast more effectively. There are videos comparing this on youtube.
Please hack a New 3DS XL and do a comparison! I love my 2DS XL. Can't do PSP games, but between the 3DS and regular DS libraries you've got a bunch of N64 games, Resident Evil, MGS Snake Eater, some Final Fantasy games, a hand full of Castlevania games. I emulate Sega Genesis games all the time, the SNES and Gameboy emulators on that thing are great. I think somebody made a homebrew port of the first Portal game for this thing. The reason I'm interested in a comparison between the GPD and New 3DSXL is because I wanna emulate my games on a device that has really easy multiplayer support, and the 3DSXL has the same form factor as the GPD devices.
Izzy a little bit off topic but I just bought 99vidas and I really enjoyed it 😄 gpd XD is good but I still like my phone it's not the best but works for me. in a sense you don't have to worry about chipset if you buy a phone regularly.
Shoutout from Edmonton! I am definitely considering getting one of these. My PSP emulates GBA fine but I’m having a ton of issues with SNES. If there is an easier way of bringing Chrono Trigger with me wherever I go then I want it. Thanks Izzy.
LobsterFusion the latest iOS update of Chrono trigger is basically the DS version with the graphics and also cut scenes. I’m not sure about Android. But that’s probably a better way to have it on you at all times.
I just got one of these but the XD Plus w/bluetooth that was almost brand new for about half price because the person who bought it didn't understand you have to configure and load your own games and emulators and you have to update flash the rom with the new version from the website to get rid of the old crappy emulators that it comes with. It works beautifully with Geforce Now and don't tell anyone but google stadia games work on it too you just have to set it up and go through the loops.
I own a Gemini PDA and I have debian linux on it. Because I am a linux gamer and the gemini although technically a phone is basically a small laptop computer. It was pretty easy for me to connect my gaming PC to my gemini via my home server so I can play all my linux games on my phone. In addition smaller linux games I have directly installed on my phone! Literal PC gaming in my pocket :)
I have used the regular XD for a long time and happily switched to XD+ here's why. Performance boost of about 20% not only raw power but also using newer tech like 64bit CPU, Vulcan and Android 7.0 possibly 9.0 in the future. 5GHZ wifi which works wonders for streaming games, Bluetooth for use with gamepads and headphones. Lastly and most importantly for me more space for Android games since you can use the SD card as an internal storage, on a regular XD you can get only 32GB of space 64GB if you're lucky to get the red model, but on my XD+ I have 288GB of internal space 32+256 with a good fast micro SD card. One thing to note is whichever version you have install a custom firmware, on the XD+ it's CleanRom by Black-Seraph, the official firmware on both versions is a bloated glitched mess.
Huh, may have to check this out. I've been going back to older games lately like the SNES library and while I have enjoyed some games on the 3ds virtual console the emulation isnt the best. Can you control the resolution things display at? I know I'm a heathen and all but I like the screen to be full, stretching or otherwise.
That is an interesting product that they made, but there is also the option to attach controllers to your phone and play on your phone but always keep an eye on your phone battery. How good is the samsung note 8 when it comes to emulation?
I still jam on my xd+ when I don’t wanna “haul” around the win2. Actually it’s mostly when I don’t feel like fiddling with windows and settings and blah blah blah. The android os and emulators just work in the xd. What’s annoying about it tho is when you close it during shut down it automatically goes into sleep mode and turns the audio all the way up, not good when you’re in class and it starts sending notifications left and right.
Hey Izzy Congo on 100k subs and when will you another live stream I really enjoy them Hey keep up the good work BTW can you giveaway one GPD XD (my parents won't buy me one cause its really expensive India)
Hi there. I have two questions? Can i use it as Phantasy Star machine on the go? (Pso on DC, PsP2 on Psp and Ps Zero on DS) Would you recomend it for Remoteplay for PS4 in 2020? (whit TMCDEV Rem4p for android). Thx for the good work.
It is "OK" at best. Some are ok with it and some hardcore gamers complain that the dpad is "mushy". You can replace the pads with NDSL pads and they are much better and firmer.
Holy crap, thanks for explaining the shoulder buttons thing to me. I had no idea why the battery would sometimes be 1% when I turned it back on. It's also a pity they don't make the Plus in red. Other than that, loving it! I have Arc Browser set up with collections for Mario, Sonic, Zelda, Disney, Simpsons. I want to set up ZX Spectrum and map the controls, but this may be beyond my skill. Oh, PS, I also bought this after watching your videos on it :D. I went for the Plus because of the Bluetooth, but have actually never used it
Izzy or anyone :), do you know the "PowKiddy X18"? What would the XD does, that the X18 does not? I really like the lower price with a bigger screen, but what games/system would I miss with the X18 instead of the GPD XD?
The hinge on my xd+ is screwed up so I just left it in a drawer and stopped emulating games for the past year. Had a great time with it when it first released though
I just had to throw out my GPDXD. I'd left it alone for a few months and I just noticed that the battery was bulging, splitting the lower portion of the case apart. I used to half-addicted to Mr Driller on it. I'd get another one or the Plus if there was good Saturn emulation for Baku baku animal.
i had the a button on my GPD XD Plus fall in, like the only way to "press" it anymore is like a tap. Are there models which are immune to this problem somehow? I know that anyone experienced in repair could easily fix this, but I don't want to have to deal with repair on something like that
I want a handheld emulation machine but the Gpd XD is a bit to expensive as a starting point for me. Is there any other machine that is good for like ps1 gba and snes games? i will probs get a gpd xd in the end but it would be cool to see if any cheaper options are out there.
I was wondering, I have a Sony xperia Play with something like 32gb internal memory. I remember that installing games on there was a chore if you wanted to install a whole bunch of them, with some data required to stay on internal memory, even when transfering the game to the memory card. I also remember buying another cellphone not long after with a more recent Android version after gingerbread, omitting the option to transfer game data to the external memory, allowing only video/photo/audio files etc. Is this tied to phones only or how does it work with the GPD XD? This would really be a dealbreaker for me, since I’d like to have 1 system with pretty much my entire childhood gaming library on there (I have a jailbroken psp with a memory card of 400gb in there, basically allowing me to play anything the GPD can, other than android games, which would mean added value for sure) TLDR: is it possible to store all games on the external memory?
Hey dude. I need some help with something. Are you familiar with the Dreamcast emulator reicast? I'm trying it out on my gpd xd plus. It works really well. Except I can't get games to save. I noticed that there are also no savestates. Is it possible to save? Is there something I'm not doing right in the settings? Any help would be appreciated.
I love my GPD XD. I've got the original and while its not perfect (lack of 5ghz wifi, Android 4.4, kinda mushy Dpad and slippery thumbsticks), its my favourite handheld and I have a Switch, 3DS, PSP and had 2 Vitas. Got mine loaded with games and movies with a 128GB micro-SD card.
Its worth noting that from my experience, using the GPD XD+ over HDMI-Out while using Bluetooth controllers introduces a degree of lag which I instantly felt was gone when I plugged in my USB controllers - I tested with the 8bitDo, a NES, a SNES, and an N64 USB controller using a micro-USB to USB type A converter. Having controllers plugged in removed any lag but meant I couldn't charge the GPD XD+ at the same time - supposedly the port in the back cannot be used for inputs as well as charging. Take this all with a pinch of salt of course, its my experience only, and I haven't seen if others have had issues.
as far as charging, use a "Y" otg cable. You will not be able to charge the xd+ but I have found that you can KEEP the charge at the same level. So if you connect the "Y" cable at 72%, it will stay at 72% while it is connected to "Y" cable. PS: could you test it further and see if you get that lag with OTG and NO HDMI out?
Looks really cool. Still using my Nvidia shield go, which can emulate pretty much anything through Dreamcast flawlessly. Haven't tried Gamecube on it yet. This thing is a beast. Had it since launch. Only issue is it is a bit heavy. Imagine a screen attached to an xbox controller only heavier(due to all the hardware inside). Worth checking out and I absolutely love it.
The GPD XD Plus runs dreamcast better than the Shield Portable. Almost runs gamecube at full speed. Almost runs Ps2 at full speed. Depends on what game your trying to play on the gamecube and ps2 but it's definitely more powerful than the shield portable I just watched a comparison showing that it gets about 15-20 fps lower results on dreamcast games like skies of arcadia and shenmue than the GPD XD PLUS. Nvidia Shield Portable doesn't have OPL 3 and 4 support which means it will not be able to ever.
Once vulkan api works on android emu Gamecube and Ps2 and Wii should play perfectly fine on the GPD XD Plus. The shield won't be able to run vulkan and has only Partial OPL 2.0 support while most emulators past ps1 use OPL3 as backup and OPL4 as main.
DeeKnow Yeah, found this out the hard way.😂Been messing with my GPD and absolutely love it. Will try out PS2 later. Playing a lot if PSP, need to figure out how to run GameCube better, overall really happy with it.
Which platforms are you most hoping to emulate ? I semi-recently got one as well and I'm enjoying it. It can play psp games and ps1 games without modding. Then you have retroarch on there, gameboy advance games, snes games. Though N64 emulation is still glitchy as hell. Plus it has the advantage of being a vita so you can also play the vitas big library of rpgs.
@@jacob7922 I tried out retro arch with SNES emulation and it was horrible in the sound department, also GBA emulation was horrible. PS1 and PSP I haven't tried yet but read that it runs smoothly with Adrenaline. But all this I can actually have with my GPD XD minus PS Vita games.
It doesn't have everything the vita has unfortunately. They each have their own advantages and disadvantages. He doesn't really go into which emulators work as well on the GPD but I have been told that PSP games have significant problems on the GPD XD plus and not all PS1 era games work either. It can emulate Gameboy and SNES games better though. You need to overclock the vita to get gameboy games to run at full speed, I never had any problems with SNES sound on mine but I didn't use retroarch for that I used a standalone emulator.
@@jacob7922 On the GPD XD all emulators run smoothly up to Dreamcast emulation. As he mentioned. Dreamcast and PSP are it's upper limits. PS2 does not run anymore. Everything beneath inclusive DOS Box, Amiga, C64, CPS, RPG Maker 2000/2003, SNES, SMS, SG, SGG, Lynx, NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GBA, NDS, N64, PS1, ScummVM, runs smoothly. At least it does on my GPD XD. ^^
ALSO.. Lastly.. The Refresh rates of the XD vs the XD Plus. The XD Plus has a slightly lower quality screen with a lower tick rate , but its brighter, also the PLUS has more powerful hardware and double the amount of usable ram.. So you will have to adjust your emulators if you are looking for perfect accuracy compared to the old refresh rate of the old screen. But that's literally the only downside to the PLUS. It has a different refresh rate than the XD.
I almost bought this back in September, but after heavy consideration I decided to get the Win 2 instead. Still interested in getting one in the near future.
I do love the GPD XD too, it was my main machine for years, but I gave up on ti for one single reason: the input lag on android machines is very bad because of the way input stack is working (30~90ms more than windows devices for instance). And there are no way of improving it other than rewritting a custom driver and input system, like Nvidia did. This input lag don't matter so much on modern games or on slow paced games, but on platform games it changes everything.
Isn't funny that Xbox Classic and Sega Saturn are harder to emulate than Dreamcast and PS2?

Love my GPD, can’t wait till the GPD 2 comes out, they have been hinting that they’re making a true successor.
KILLERZEN GPD’s twitter account. The question was asked, GPD simply replied with a “wink” emoji so it’s pretty obvious they are gonna do it.
Cheers Izzy 👍 love your vids and love the XD. Did you ever get your hands on the ldk retrogame?
These are great, just a little expensive! It does appear to be one of the best portable emulation devices around however.
I love you. Most youtubers don't give an answer at the start and it is annoying.
LOVE when you do GPDXD videos! I have both and love em!
Thanks for the quick review. Watch it through because of that.
finally another
i love seeing you talk about open handhelds
Can't wait for the next gpdxd I want to buy one the plus version I think. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for that in the beginning. I hate to search through the video for the final opinion
Hey Izzy Congo on 100k subs
and when will you another live stream I really enjoy them
Hey keep up the good work
BTW can you giveaway one GPD XD (my parents won't buy me one cause its really expensive India)
How is the D-Pad? is the quality on par with Nintendo and Sony handhelds?
I went for the Plus because of the Bluetooth, but have actually never used it
CleanROM is a custom firmware for the xd+ and the developer put in something to disable the xd+ from waking up with buttons.
Izzy, love your videos, really nice! Even the XD with half the memory of the XD PLUS is it still worth it?
Great video Izzy! I love my XD+ !
Izzy, quick question, you love Advance Wars, but don't like fantasy tactics. Is Wargroove an exception, it's basically fantasy Advance Wars
i had the a button on my GPD XD Plus fall in, like the only way to "press" it anymore is like a tap. Are there models which are immune to this problem somehow? I know that anyone experienced in repair could easily fix this, but I don't want to have to deal with repair on something like that
2019 models are made much better.
I was thinking about an Android based console, they suggested me this or GPD Win, which Android version it mounts? Is that upgradable?
I want a handheld emulation machine but the Gpd XD is a bit to expensive as a starting point for me. Is there any other machine that is good for like ps1 gba and snes games? i will probs get a gpd xd in the end but it would be cool to see if any cheaper options are out there.
Do you download games from the device itself or do you have to use a laptop or pc?
I was wondering, I have a Sony xperia Play with something like 32gb internal memory. I remember that installing games on there was a chore if you wanted to install a whole bunch of them, with some data required to stay on internal memory, even when transfering the game to the memory card.
I also remember buying another cellphone not long after with a more recent Android version after gingerbread, omitting the option to transfer game data to the external memory, allowing only video/photo/audio files etc. Is this tied to phones only or how does it work with the GPD XD? This would really be a dealbreaker for me, since I’d like to have 1 system with pretty much my entire childhood gaming library on there (I have a jailbroken psp with a memory card of 400gb in there, basically allowing me to play anything the GPD can, other than android games, which would mean added value for sure)
TLDR: is it possible to store all games on the external memory?
Hey dude. I need some help with something. Are you familiar with the Dreamcast emulator reicast? I'm trying it out on my gpd xd plus. It works really well. Except I can't get games to save. I noticed that there are also no savestates. Is it possible to save? Is there something I'm not doing right in the settings? Any help would be appreciated.
you can install a 512gb sd card. scan disk brand seems to work best
OOT and Majoras Mask randomized on GPD XD plus.. Best thing ever!
What does randomized mean?
Okay you’ve finally convinced me to buy one. Thank you!!
jweston20 same
I love my GPD XD.
This or the ps vita Izzy what do you prefer?
7mn07 what is your frontend ? Easy to install? I'm new with gpd xd .Just bought one with custom firmaware.
Will you be reviewing the moqi i7s for emulation gaming?
As soon as I can get my hands on one!
Im planning to save money in this
You have earned a sub!
I finally know the name of this hardware lol
Hey izzy are you getting a bittboy v3 ? Would love to see you do a side by side with the older revision 👌
It's no surprise. Even high end android phones has this problem. The OS has literally fucked bluetooth controllers.
as far as charging, use a "Y" otg cable.
"Straight to the point? Yes. Very worth it."
Ight imma head out
I want one so bad, thank you for introducing me to such an innovative device!!
Hello Izzy, are you using the cleanrom on your xd?
Does the analog stick/slider give analog output? If yes, it's analog.
What is "an actual analog" and why do you think an analog slider is not that?
I love my GPD XD!
Lmao love your channel homie. Straight to the point. And very detailed.
What app do you use to stream Steam games to the older model GPD XD? The official Steamlink app doesn't seem to be supported.
supermist try moonlight
how useful is this thing as a "phone" im weighing it against the pyra handheld - is there a good way to stuff an sd card in it? like w a usb adaptor?
Does it work with Super Nintendo games well? I have trouble with SNES games on PSP
ALSO..
I have a GPD XD 32. I want to update the software to be able to play PSP 1 games. Can you give me an advice? What must I install?
Does spectrum, atari, amiga emulators etc work ok without a keyboard?
Can you let us know how it compares to the Nvidia Shield and Shield Portable? It seems like those two are the new kings, right?
