Squeezing A Turbocharged 2.0L AMG Engine Into A Mercedes 190E - Golden Era Ep.2

- Опубликовано: 2 окт 2024
- ► DTM’s “Golden Era” was filled with shrieking, 10,00RPM+ monsters and over-boosted beasts that regularly pushed the envelope of what was capable from a four-cylinder engine. Thirty years later, AMG has built the M133, a fire-spitting, turbocharged animal that has wiped the floor with everything in its class. The 190E’s original engine was never going to cut it in the DTM tribute, but a modified, modern equivalent of the race engine sure will.
With the blue interior and sound deadening gone, the 190E shell is finally ready for some clever engineering. The Merc's original steering, suspension, and braking components just aren’t going to be up to the task, so it’s up to Nate and Danny to figure out where they can update the tired Mercedes with modern AMG parts, including that engine. Slapped into a caged and stripped chassis with a manual transmission and rear-wheel drive, the M133 should feel right at home, though not without some modifications first. Find out just what it takes to bring a 190E into the 21st century right here in episode two.

this build is everything. more episodes now please.
Hi PSYCL3S! Unfortunately you'll have to wait until next Thursday for the third installment, but the link in the description of this video will provide a bit more info on this project while you wait. From there, you can also find our official "190E 2.0-16 Build Thread!"
I second this!!!. Been subscribed for a min, but came back because of this build. Love the 190E
This is an awesome project. Putting a modern 4 cylinder turbo engine into a vintage DTM racing machines is something I really wanted to see 👍
Well you've come to the right place to see it come to fruition Maser808!
It is excellent content.
Refreshing to see an engine swap with something else than a LS engine.
We agree Jesper that a lot of viable Euro power/platforms are ignored for the more common routes.
LS is cheaper, easier and more powerful
@@unclejoe6811 I totally agree with you on that, and understand why it is so widely used. But it is also fun to see a mercedes with an actual mercedes engine in it. Especially this model, which had a 4 cylinder engine when used for DTM back in the days. It can also help on the handling and weight distribution to keep it a 4 cylinder, since it is not that big a car.
The straight TRUTH!
For real, everything is LS or K20, everything
Awesome project, looking forward to seeing the finished article. I really hope , that maybe, once this project is finished you would big a homage to the 190E's older and bigger brother - the Mercedes-Benz W123 AMG 5.6 'Rote Sau' - that would be truly awesome. Keep up the great work on your 'Stuttgart Steed' ! 👍👍
Love that concept Rusty! What would your modern take on the legendary M100 V8 be?
Rote Sau was the nickname given to the one 6.8liter 109018 300SEL 6.3 that AMG built to go racing with, and got a little help through the back door courtesy of Waxl. But AMG built quite a few W123 V8's. The ultimate was actually the first which was a taxi beige sedan with a 6.0 liter DOHC conversion with 5 speed trans.
Ive been waiting this kind of project...
As well as looking for classic volvo with new gen t8 turbo+supercharge swap...
Looking sweet...
But i got 1 suggestion for the steering rack and pump setup...
1-the rack needs to sit level with tie rod end at the wheel knuckle AT final ride height with tyres on the grown and full body weight resting on suspension...
Definately not at tye same level as lower arm bolt point...
Probably 1" or 2" higher from lower arm bolt position...
And to simplify the steering pump plumbing/location, just use electric hydraulic steering pump for this build...
Definately frees up some area and saving the plumbing headache...
The Music, the cinematography, very reminiscent of the 80s... Well done, TEAM!!!
I had, for a time, a manual 2.3-16. It ended up being a rust bucket and I sold it on. But I still miss the spirit of what it was. You are doing the right thing by doing this this way. It's not a radical departure from the theory of what the 190 was meant to be at its peak. Its an augmentation I can absolutely stand behind. Please continue.
I love that the Merc tuner crowd is slowly getting the attention they deserve.
We feel the same! So much unrealized potential, especially here in the US market.
MOAR PLZ K THX!!!
There was so many wins in this episode, love learning more about the m133 and even m274 which I knew nothing about. The fact that it can bolt up to the 716.6xx is rad!!! No idea what an m133 would cost if I could ever find one anyway, but I’d grab one in a heartbeat seeing what you shared! On to the next one, can’t wait!
We are so stoked on what this platform has to offer now that we've taken the dive down the rabbit hole of whats possible!
You guys are doing what I've always been dreaming of doing with 80's and 90's cars ♥️
i actually did the same on my 190E but with the w204 engine 1.8 supercharger with the manual transmission its a fun swap but no power steering or AC and used all original wiring because im not a pro like you guys i just did what i can to make it work and its awesome fun to drive
that's pretty cool
That's a great swap Debsi! The M271 is a neat engine, and would be a blast in such a light chassis!
Can’t wait for future episodes, the 190 is such a great car👌👌
Bruhhh I always wonder how AMG 2.0T would sound wit a manual, sickkk 👀🔥🔥
I don’t know what happened but the last time I saw an FCP video it was good, it was informative but it was not on the same level as this episode, we definitely need more of this!
a45 amg engine powering rear wheels, with bmw e46 steering, and a manual transmission. what an amazing recipe. shame the cla45 is not like that.
This is so cool.
I especially appreciate it having a 37k mile Euro spec 5-speed 2.3-16.
Wow nice I’m looking forward to seeing the final product!
We're excited to show you, Terry! Tune in again next Thursday as we dive even deeper into creating "the Ultimate Evolution" of the 190E!
I will be patiently waiting
80s and 90s cars are just the best! it was before the modern idea of luxury with touch screens and silly swipe features to use all the functions of the car a lot of the time they’re built strong and reliable because that was the idea of luxury back in the day and the best part is they’re young enough that the majority don’t see them as classics yet so they’re still fairly cheap
They truly hold a special place in our heart here at FCP Euro. It was the Golden Era for a reason
You guys are doing a fine job on the W201 car, and it should do well for you. My version of this type of swap started with CL203 chassis but utilized turbocharged M104.900 VR6 for power. The VR6 footprint was a perfect match for the 203 chassis and it`s always nice when you pull off a swap that no one else has done using mostly off the shelf parts. Keep rolling.......
The M104 loves boost! That engine has stayed a bit of a tuner's secret here in the US market, but the potential for power is undeniable. We'd love to see you make it happen!
What a build, nice 💖🤌 I was thinking of w202, hoping to do it some day ✌️
Really good stuff!👍 I swapped a Ford 302 into my W124 Coupe.
Wow... I have been think about this for a while but I did think it was possible because the engine was horizontal but the new sl gave me hope. I didn't know The it was possible to use A45 motor in the 190e. The 190e should be incredible since it was built well and light weight it should be really fast and go around. Corners too.
also, if I reemember correctly, it was designed for rally from the ground up so it should still have the factory chassis reinforcements that every common 190 had for rally spec.
Magnificent. I'm a long time w201 guy, since the times of the old 190 enthusiast webpage back in the early 2000's, my first car was an 8v and have owned a few since then. I started with gasoline engines but now I'm getting familiar with the diesel versions as now I got ahold of a 2.2 diesel. Speed is not a factor for me at this point as an older guy but, because of my previous experience with 190 accessories, I would love to see what you guys do with the interior design. I also redo my wood with nitrocellulose just like the original factory wood, just to name one example from that Golden Era.
WOW! Cannot believe that someone shared the same vision about a car as me. Many projects(including mine) feature the long and heavy m104s, which basically scalps any cornering capabilities. And this cannot be farther away from the light-handling nature, which this chassis was built for. A dream project guys - greetings from eastern europe! With a revised suspension this should easily stay in touch with modern(=heavy) performance cars around most tracks.
Awesome, I was talking with Denofa about this a few years ago. Subscribed👍🏽👍🏽
Thanks for the Sub Kelly - Chelsea is a good friend of ours, we think he'll like it.
Sadly soon all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-(
In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime (Bundesabgasbespassungsverbotsverordnung).
It’s hilarious and genius that Mercedes has basically used the same bell-housing bolt pattern for soo long.
We were plesently suprised.
I've seen a used 190e 2.3 16v hopefully I'll buy it and turbo charge it for my daily driving but sincerely I don't know how to do it I got the inspiration from watching all these car videos from blompoo, varkstan ( the om606 guys) and ever since I have been obsessed with old mercedes tunning and turbo charging,
Would anyone here like to give me guidelines on how to go on this project of a dream build and how much it might cost.
The production of this video is AMAZING
There's no dampening on those fabbed mounts...also gonna be difficult working on the belt with the mount in place should there be a need in the future....still a very impressive build though.
AWESOME ENGINEERING THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR SKILLS
I keep hearing David Mickey Evans from The Sandlot when the narrator speaks. Great build!!
Dude 👀 looked like APHEX TEIN WINDOWLICKER AlBum 💿 arteowk cover. 😂❤🎉
PS is for wussies, but if you have to have it, save some weight, mess, HP and heat and use a EPS from Saturn or Toyota.. super easy and the assist is just right in default mode (no controller required)
This series is so well done. I’m hooked!
Hell ya Dave - glad youre enjoying it! Come back next Thursday as the team sorts out the suspension and some other hiccups.
When I call FCP scratching my head about a suspension bolt for my allroad and you guys are bolting things that don’t fit together together and not even sweating.
Is that some weird krautwagen enthusiast's definition of "it wants to be in here"? Lol. "Ja, it is zimple, just reengineer ze whole engine haus"
Duuuuuuudes, this is amazing.
By the way, could you prepare a little A180 into a rally car?
Electric power steering pump from Volvo is adaptable...interchangeable parts across mercedes models can be suprising
Amazing how modular cars can really be sometimes Ayobami!
Hi, I'm new to your channel, have you done any w203 c180k engine swaps.
W210 rack on the W201 is a very easy and common conversion.
amazing! how old engine was so compact with low height compares to current A45 amg engine.
It really was a completely different approach to how they packaged the powertrain
I can’t wait to see this finished, also it’s cool you used my car in this clip!
We had to squeeze it in there Devin!
Did Ed Bollian narrate this?
We have often times told Alan (our co worker doing the VO that he sounds like Ed 😂)
Looking for a new episode of my favourite build on this same car just found this gem of a channel, now I get 2 diferent builds, twice as many videos and 2 end results.
Happy to hear that you're enjoying the project, Ian! Tune in every Thursday for new episodes!
That’s so crazy that all those parts still mix and mash together
My favourite story about the 190 is seeing art on senna drive one in a “staged race” and smoke all the other famous drivers.
2.0-16😂😂. No longer a cossey but a natey😂😂😂
Faith into this and it will surprise and inspire , the multilink suspension in the rear is golden like this series , a revolutionary lite weight track attack machine .
Can't wait for the next episode. Good work boys
Thanks Hector glad you're diggin it so far!
Hey guys great build. What's the size of those OZ wheels pls?
This is terrible n should be illegal, one of the worst engine ever especially for that car.
To bad your use of tape and box filling isn't as good as your engine swaps.
This is crazy...how awesome to have the proper tools. Lol. Love it.
Oh man ! your work is great. like German precision
electric power steering fron some polo o ibiza or fabia o opel.....
Awesome swap in an awesome chassis. I can't believe Bob didn't call about your vehicle's extended warranty. Are there any plans for any kind of modifications to the engine or just swapping out the drive train?
The stock M133 is already pretty potent for the weight we anticipate the 190E 2.0-16 to be, but we do expect a decent power boost as we shed some non-vital components and switch to standalone engine management. As for the rest of the driveline, you'll be seeing a lot of creativity in the coming weeks!
@@fcpeuro It is without a doubt "pretty potent" but since this is a tribute to the cars from the 80s when they were pushing the limits of what was offered shouldn't the same be done on this build? I would imagine with a turbo swap (since you need to flip it anyway) tune, E85, exhaust, intercooler (since I would imagine you plan to change it since you want to show off the motor more) and intake you should get 550-575hp I would bet.
I do understand the racing inspired build, but the only thing that would have made it better was to leave the original interior and just modernise it a bit with upholstery and re-painting of trim pieces.
Stay tuned! While we did a fair amount of modification inside and out, the 190E retains a bit more of its original interior flair than you may expect.
@@fcpeuro Can't wait!! Amazing work!! 😍
N/A with some Revs on a smooth track was ace. Turbos are cool too but man
please make a T-shirt of that car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!! :) ;)
best explanation of "Bump Steer" ever!
I'm curious what steering rack your folks are planning.
We'll give you a hint Alexander; despite upgrading to modernized equipment, the 190E 2.0-16 doesn't use a Mercedes rack. Instead, it borrows from the late ancestor of a car it helped to produce! 😉
My first car was a '88 manual 190 customer amg with a tuned m103, thing was a monster that ran over 300km/h, unfortunately got stolen. Always wanted to recreate that car but without the actual amg mechanics that worked on the car I wouldn't know what to do. You guys are kinda scratching that itch.
Been watching and rewatching this whole series, fantastic work. Two questions though:
1. Did you need to reinforce the strut tower tops when you switched to a true coilover front setup?
2. What ball joint did you end up using, and what additional work was needed on it?
Oh my gosh... I love this. I enjoy every bit of smart thought that goes into this. Very cool details and designs. Seems like you guys know what you are doing and it shows.
nice shop great build but no plasma cutter????????????????
Horizontally mounted? As opposed to what? Vertically mounted? Traverse you mean?
Calls it a squeeze but people put v12s in 190s
So maybe like the Evo2 Cosworth 2.5 Merc. Cant remember if that had a turbo thou, so good luck. Keep her lit.
When I had one of these from 1985, I was playing with the idea of having a 2.3 Kompressor engine in it. I love the Evo 2!
Please sell a body kit!!! I need an evo1 body kit lol
امتلك سياره اسطوره مثلها واتمني العمل معكم
Now this is a proper W201 build
I'll love to do something similar on a W124, but with an M117, that will be awesome
Damn I always thought about doing it when I'm rich cause in my country legally you have to transfer an engine of the same displacement
I wish I could work with these dudes.
I dream about a build like this for over 2 years, being my dream project, glad to have found this video
What the best size radiator on a w201?
HOW DARE YOU!!!!!!!!NO EMISSIONS ON THE CAR..!!!!
When u have all the tools to built... to make it happen 😍😍😍😍💪💪💪💪💪👏👏👏👏👏👏
Cant wait for pt3
We'll see you tomorrow then Brenden! Thanks for tuning into one of our biggest projects yet.
Dislike bacause no Air condition ,
I had no idea y'all had a RUclips channel
2:50 wtf that engine is literally a rats nest
This is a truly exciting project to stumble upon.
Hopefully you get to catch up and bing watch the whole series!
Seriously love fce euro. They are true car guys that sell the parts for the cars they love.
💙💙💙💙💙
you guys are brave, that is a major undertaking, bravo...
you should make a manual swap kit for the new lotus with that engine
im doing something like this in a c230k gonna manual swap it
Is that Ed narrating? Sure sound like him.
That's our own Alan on the VO! A man of many talents.
Use a sequential.. you guys going standalone anyways. Flip the turbo and run the water air infront, gonna make life simpler
Your head is in the same place as ours on the induction setup K M! Stay tuned for today's episode.
As for the transmission, we'll be going with something a bit more "in-tune" with the W201's DTM heritage.
@@fcpeuro so a dog box then? Fair enough, interesting build though i'll look forward to when its finished
Euro guys using a band saw…
Chevy guys using a sawsAll
It's the little differences....😅
Won't solid mounts hurt the chassis with all that torque?
Super cool project. I'm interested to see what they do as far as engine management.
nice engine mount-chassis brace. I like that idea
My dream build😭
This is quality content right there ! Great project !
Yes. All the yes. My first car was a 20yr old w124 and even then 18yr old I was wondering if a hot 4cyl turbo swap would be possible.
Our goal was simply to make your dreams come true codypanek !
daaaammmnnnn 😍😍 this is crazy
You make it completely wrong .. you should done the Euro way .. M111 Evo with a turbo charger ...
Maybe our next build will be "the euro way" !
No hearing protection???
