I think the thought that meta is "lazy" is a bad way to view it. looking at the double midline meta, the most common slayers at the time ( stamper, range, v slosh ) are some of if not the hardest in the game. i do agree that solely following meta as the only way to enjoy the game isn't my cup of tea. just know that learning to play meta comps can be really challenging and is nowhere easy.
I wholeheartedly agree meta is so freaking stupid. It takes the fun out of playing online games no matter if you're casual or competative (the examples that apply to me being Splatoon, Mario Kart, and Cookie Run Kingdom). One cookie will be put up on a pedastal only to be dropped and forgotten the moment the next "best cookie" for a class comes out in a later update. And then gear for Splatoon and your combo for Mario Kart. I want to do my thing and look cool, not worry so much about stats. I also don't want to worry about "I have to have this specific weapon or cookie or kart or whatever" to be "a cool kid" especially where I sometimes don't have the time/energy to play and/or I don't want to waste my money away in a gacha game.

I'm as anti-meta as it gets to the point I only play terrible weapons. Squiffer, Sploosh, both Reef-Luxes, All 3 Tri-Stringers, Splattershot Nova... I've 5 starred them all. My experience the last 2 years playing this game has been so rich because playing from the bottom forces you to get good and invent your own strategies to counter meta weapons, and the skills you develop carry over even harder to better weapons. Point is, it's satisfying. The times I broke into the top 100 leaderboard for Challenge Mode with my Reef-Lux Deco and Sploosh will always mean more to me than my top 3000 and top 1000 X badges. And the match I had this week where I massacred a JP team so hard with my Neo Sploosh to the point their 52.Gal started squidbagging when he finally killed me felt amazing.
I'll always think that taking a weapon(s)/character(s)/etc you love and going as high as you can with it will always be more fun and rewarding than taking the weapon of the moment. That's also why I hate the kit system, because it doesn't let you be creatif as much as you want. Also being an underdog is more memorable. being dedicated to a weapon can open the door to some crazy stuff that pro-meta cannot imagine. Also meta mean nothing I mean how many times have we seen weapons that are considered average or bad be super strong because japanese and english don't communicate with each other? Never forget that optimization kill fun and creativity. We're human not robot. The greatest quality of the human race is its creativity.
I'm just gonna say it right now the people saying the meta is the only way to rank up have massive skill issues. splatoon is probably the most balanced shooter I've ever played so just pick what you find fun. personally i will probably always be a glooga main for the more stand and fight approach to its design.

Play the game in the way that is fun for you. Some people have the most fun when they are playing the weapon with their most enjoyable play pattern. Some people have the most fun when they are hyper-optimizing their win percentage, even if that means playing a weapon with a boring play pattern that is easy or powerful or both. Personally, I would rather pursue the play patterns I enjoy and accept a lower win rate. I’m not sure who said this originally (I first read it in Name of the Wind, and I know Reborn likes to say something similar), but: Don’t focus on winning, focus on playing a beautiful game.
I just kinda play whatever i want. If its in the meta, cool. If its not in the meta, cool. Shit there were people winning tournaments with aerospray back in splatoon 2. Obviously the meta will always exist. In things like tournaments the goal is to win, so no shit. But looking at that areospray example, its proof that even people in high level tournaments aren't necessarily slaves to the meta, and I see no reason anyone else should be.
I always played splat charger since I first saw Splatoon 1 in an ad. The weapon happened to be top tier in all games. Same for Fox in smash, except I wanted to do a Melee glitch in Brawl.

Tbh I don't really care about meta at all nor I am affected by it because when I play a certain weapon in game, I play it because I think it's good, cool looking, or mabye it could be a weapon that I'm passionate about it. I also don't care what others have to say about what others recommend for what builds you should have for certain weapons, for instance maybe someone might recommend ninja squid on the primary chunk slot for the Mint Decavitator for better sharking, and while I do see a good point in the suggestion, I gotta pass because I think ninja squid isn't important in general if it just allows you to be more sneaky in ink, as long as you timing your movements right in your ink without it, you shouldn't need it. As for my primary slot on Mint Decavitator, I have sub saver because In my opinion I think not just the Mint, but the Charcoal as well, consumes a bit too much ink when it comes to the sub weapon on both of them because I just think that the sub weapon is more important on Decavitator than the special. All I'm just saying is that whatever weapon you have or whatever character you pick always follow your heart, always experiment on different weapons, characters, ways, strategies, and more to find out which best works for you, and may you forever chase your hopes and dreams and drizzle out ♥️.
I can't see why you would want to use reef deco tho. "Just takes more effort" unnecessary effort imo. If you have to work this extremely hard for a weapon like this to work outside of zones cheese, it shows how bad the kit is. Not saying you shouldn't use it. Just saying there are some clear stinkers that would be considered bad.
Plenty of reasons, someone could just like the kit or weapon. Some people find accomplishment and satisfaction in getting good with weapons people consider "bad." Deco works in all modes, just easiest in Zones
