That motherboard manufacturing process you were discussing, using solder mask and solder paste, is done on a very small scale by hand by Lada Ada at Adafruit (also in NYC!) for prototyping, and then on a small scale, but automatically by machines for all their own boards. Perhaps if you're still in the city, you should give them a shout too about popping in!

Hearing Maslow’s hierarchy used in the context of computer repair is interesting, but I guess it makes sense as a general concept. If thing B needs thing A to function, or if thing A is simply more important, then it makes sense to start with thing A. It doesn’t matter if someone’s hungry if their blood is not circulating, circulation doesn’t matter if their airway has collapsed. It does matter if there is no WiFi if the screen doesn’t work, the screen doesn’t matter if the computer can’t turn on.

Explained flux as something that allows the solder to flow better.
Main point is that it keeps air away like with welding. It doesn't let air near heated metal surfaces which would create an oxide layer on them. To which solder doesn't want to stick to. Also, helps clean a bit, since some stuff/muck floats away from the surface into or to the surface of the solution.

I knew this colab will happen sooner or later. Glad it came through despite how closed off the world has been due to "current events". Enjoyed seeing the usual expert PC parts and assembly tester and reviewer jump straight into Macbook repair under Louis's guidance. Plus you guys are cat people so I knew you guys will hit it off just fine.

I am the same way. I used to pop benzodiazepines all the time to deal with it and people really liked me. Now that I stopped taking drugs they think I am on drugs, go figure. It is all good though, I make way better friends now because they have to get past that to understand what is going on...

Louis dude you are a badass.. I have done some soldering on large cables and stuff. This micro soldering is next level and you really know your shit. My roommate once left a toaster on and a cable was above it. The cable above it was for her blender. I cut the cable. Stripped the wires. Twisted them together. soldered. Then put electrical tape around the solder. Worked like a charm. It was fun.
