- In the olden days, you bought an Audi because you got more than just a badge. You got a posh interior richer in high-quality materials than a Volkswagen. You got more technology than a Seat, more performance than a Skoda, and most of all, you got the neighbourhood curtains twitching as everyone nearby noticed you’d done well for yourself. But in the brave new EV age, is a car like the Audi Q4 e-tron worth the premium price over its Volkswagen group cousin cars, or rivals from Ford or Hyundai? Top Gear Tested investigates, with Serious Car Tester Ollie Kew.

Those 'touch' buttons on the steering wheel are mechanical too. You can depress them and they click in and out. So you can choose to touch or press. I sat in the non sports back Q4 Etron yesterday. Dash is the best of any EV I have test driven so far.
I have driven all three cars: Skoda Enyaq, ID4 and the Q4 etron. The Q4 is definitely the best to drive, the best interior and the best looking.
I have one on order as a company car. I tried the ID4 (awful interior/tech) and Enyaq (much better and huge boot) as well as the Ionic 5 (fantastic car but not practical enough for me). I went for the Q4 as for me it is actually cheaper than all of the others I tried based on monthly payments/tax I pay. It is strange as against an Enyaq with the same spec it’s about £8K more list price so if I was a private buyer would definitely go for the Skoda. The Q4 though was very comfortable to drive, quick enough and practical enough for me and why wouldn’t I get an Audi for less than a Skoda?
I finally got to see and sit in an ID4 in person a few weeks ago. It’s easy to see where the extra money went. You are right, if you enjoy driving in a nice environment, this is the one to get.
reviewing a car is a personalised opinion. For me that car looks more cool that what you are comparing it to and also its about longevity and resale value too. For instance, the other two (Skoda and ID4) don't come with decent sound system, the audi has a Sonos upgrade available. Now if you are a music enthusiast like me, then i would go with the audi. However most reviewers dont even bother reviewing sound in cars.
I need this in my garage ASAP! Thanks for sharing your review!
People buying this slow and inefficient car: 🤡
So I’m 6 weeks in to having the q4 e-tron vorsprung, so top line I’m pleased. There are however some issues which having now researched are not new and are a known issue for nearly a year! Questions to ask the dealer before you buy;
- show me the Audi app and what I can do remotely? (you will be surprised by lack of functionality)
- show me how to set up user profiles? (You can’t which means every time you start you have to read a disclaimer and agree to move the message off the screen…..😖
I still remember the old top gear because it was always cheerful wherever we were, even though there was a lot of commotion but for us it was a funny thing. Thank you we from Indonesia want Ukraine And Russia make peace and no war thank you
As for the recuperation, the car will remember the regen level in dynamic mode after using the throttle. In other drive select modes, the regen level will reset to 0 after using the throttle.
“It’s very recommendable” - that’s truly damning it with faint praise. Very diplomatic.
I'm hoping the Macan really gets it right.
When you say that you can get an id.4 for much cheaper, how much cheaper is it in the UK? Here in the US, the most basic Q4 e-tron availalbe is the "premium", which has awd, leather interior and costs $51,095 (including shipping). To get an ID.4 with AWD and leather interior, you have to pick the mid-grade version, the awd "pro, S" which costs $50,605. So the VW is $490 cheaper than the Audi. Not much at all.
My 2023 Q4 sportback 50 Prestige got up over 120 and I let off. It had more to give. And its super quick 0-60.
I would imagine not many people are going out to pay cash for their ID4/Enyaq/Q4, more likely they will be doing some sort of finance/salary sacrifice where the monthly payments are what matters. When I was ordering through my work the ID4 first edition, Enyaq 80 and Q4 40 S-Line were within £5 a month of each other. For me that was close enough to make the choice down to personal preferences. I preferred the looks of the Audi (not a sportback), and the MMI seemed more slick and less buggy than the ID4 and Enyaq (though updated since may have helped?). Also liked the HVAC having physical buttons. I got my Q4 in November and it’s been great so far. It even has a boring round steering wheel(video on my channel if you want to see- all the review ones seem to be the hexagonal one)😆 Good luck if you want to order one though- I believe you’ll have to wait around a year for delivery 😬
ruclips.net/video/rGRS9FHZTCY/видео.html
Tried a Tiguan with those horrible steering wheel buttons once. They are truly horrific. Was looking at the Q4 e-tron (to replace my A6) but not any more.
why review the 40 rear wheel drive? why not the 50 Quattro?
Just took it for the short test drive and loved it. Probably will be my next car after my current Volvo xc60t8. However I have to go a year or two on my current car. Love how VAG is approaching the look of electric vehicles, all look great no matter which you take: Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda or Porsche. Unfortunately can’t say the same about electric Volvo model range. My hybrid Volvo looks great but the new upcoming electric generation is awful.
Great video. This Audi is very beautiful. Love the design. Would put at the top of the class for me. It’s that even that much more than the ID4 and Enyaq, so I’d pay for Audi
i think its mad ugly
I just had a test drive on 2022 Q4 e-tron US version. Nice and smoothly. Therefore, the mark-up 15K on top of $62532 + some extra that bring the car price around $80000
I will wait for Lexus EV SUV coming out 2023
Holy cow. that's a lot. Which state if you don't mind me asking?
Am I missing something? Audi, Skoda, VW (and Seat) have been platform sharing for decades. Audi always have the interior, vw the better chassis setup, Skoda and seat not far off. Nothings changed here? Agree with the touch buttons, a horrible idea, but at least there’s some proper buttons still. Crazy but this direction of buttonless interiors puts me off buying a new car. The q4 at least is ok in this regard, but the Skoda Enyaq relies on a big touch screen
Want to hear something even more amazing? All manufactures do the same. That's how they build cars.
@@krane15 yes of course *I* know this, but the guy in the video appears to think platform sharing is a new concept for VAG
I tested the Audi Q4 Etron in Munich last year. The car is good, but nowhere near close to iX3, even though they're similar prices.
Enough space for a proper adult.
What constitutes a proper adult... And what is the inverse? An improper adult?
Cool, the new Audi x6
Nice vid i live audi q5
What’s going on with Top Gear? The same reviews, the same conclusions as everyone else, just months late. Amazed there are so many millions of subscribers tbh. And why only mention the Q4’s siblings when there are so many other good/better EVs out there now?
I have ordered mine in july/2021 and am still waiting to arrive...
Ordered mine in November 21 and now not due until October 22 :(
Interesting. I feel the opposite as I can’t get excited about old/dead technology in ICE cars. If the difference were to be likened; an ICE car is to VHS as an electric cars is to 8k streaming
Reskinned ID4 isn't very exciting...
OK dear boy. A Bentley in 2022 is now also a very fat Audi A7, an Aston Martin DBX a Mercedes inside. Rolls, a BMW inside. How far do we go with these weird comparisons, my friend?
Your exactly right my friend
*These newer electrics vehicles are looking so attractive with all the slick gadgets manufacturers are putting in them but something about EVs for me still doesn't appeal maybe one day* 🤷♂️
I felt the same way until I test drove a Tesla.
@@lagunamusic7686 I've got to give one a go so I can see what they're about I'd definitely not invest that price tag in one
My future car 🚙
“A proper adult” LOL
Weight distribution almost 5050
I think this car will suffer heavily from depreciation.
Sort of a Buick vs. Chevy problem
I dont think they know what "sport" means.
Platform sharing has been defacto standard for VW (and Stellantis etc). Nothing new, so not quite what you think that is new for the EV's.
The back reminds me of an A2!
Forgot to mention the price, somehow.
CAN WE STOP CALLING THESE SUVS OR CROSSOVERS!! IT'S A DAMN CAR!!
Just because it has all-wheel drive doesn't make it an SUV. Sport utility vehicle means you can take it on the road, you can take it off road, you can haul things with it, you can carry the whole family and then some. Just like the mustang Mach E they trying to claim as a crossover. NO! It's a hatchback mustang that you electrified and made ugly as crap.
that's not how most of the industry uses the term lol it just about size and shape
what u describing they call off-road
@@a55tech no, when the term SUV was first coined it meant a vehicle that could do everything. Hence why the name utility is in it.
@@Rob-hv5zq perhaps but u gotta keep up w/ the times lol
Chris or Jack pls
What was that limited to 99mph thing?
Oh goodness it's true... I mean I won't need to drive over 75mph except when passing on some highways. But that plus 8.5 seconds to get up to 60mph... I'll just wait for an electric vehicle that doesn't suck. They're always a disappointment.
Drum brakes on an Audi? WOW ! Is this a cost cutting or a feature?
How to differentiate identical products?
Make 'em look like sh1t and fill 'em full of TV screens..... is what BMW is going with.
Top review, thanks
So would you recommend a Tesla over the Q4.
why? Tesla build quality is crap. Panel gapping differences even from same Model 3 to Model 3. lol
good boy 🤠
The is limited to 112mph. Where is the 'missing' 12mph?
右ハンドルなのですね。
日本と同じなのです。
発売が待ち遠しい…
Top speed 100?
So basically your saying it's a piece of garbage?
Why is it that every single car company is so far behind Tesla when it comes to performance and range?
I can’t get my head around it
Fit and finish? Lots of poor experiences out there. This was also the lowest spec for performance and range.
@@j.ballsdeep420
Did you not read my comment?
I said “Why is it that every single car company is so far behind Tesla when it comes to performance and range?”
Where the hell does fit and finish come in to play in that question?
We need 10´000 15´000 20´000 dollar cars NOW!
I love the flat steering wheel, i think you're way off. It's much much easier to control and rest a finger in the 7 and 4 o'clock grooves, and the 6 o'clock bottom doesn't hit your legs. Huge disagreement there. "it's not an F1 car" is a stupid reasoning for it. Drive it for 10k miles in stop and go traffic and on the highway, your attitude will change.
It’s optional anyway
RUclipsr are better than top gear : it’s no more top gear : it’s ----- Slow Gear ---
Rear drum brakes show they are struggling to make prices competitive imo. Saving where they can
Drum brakes on many electric cars make sense as the regen handles the majority of braking on the rear axle. Discs when not used enough corrode and seize hence the many issues with Nissan leafs and other leccy cars. These drums are oversized but crucially fully sealed
@@samjordan3029 i am skeptical as to them being superior tho. Lighter cars like A1 have rear disks. Electric cars like Teslas have rear disks. Drum brakes haven’t been fitted to Audis for like over 2 decades. I think it is cos Teslas are made so efficiently they can charge lower price and legacy auto have to cut corners to desperately try and generate some margin while having competitively priced cars with Tesla
@@brick62345 no he is right. Volkswagen builds drum brakes in the back for this exact reason. Look carefully how man EVs have rusted brakes. That's really dangerous in an emergency.
@@galahad8856 I don’t see many with rusted brakes. Friction brakes still get used just only for moderate braking intensity and beyond
Yes top gear love legacy auto so much : they can’t say : it’s shit
So in conclusion, buy the Skoda Enyaq from VAG, or shop elsewhere.
Tried them all and ordered an Audi (company car). As a private buyer get the Enyaq - very little difference to the Q4 apart from interior controls. As a company car the Q4 pretty much the same price spec for spec so it’s trickier. As for the ID4, just no - the software/controls/interior for me were horrible.
This is going to be the problem! For now on you are just paying more for a badge when underneath it's the same thing as Volkswagen
It has been that way for a few decades now, on ICE cars they simply tuned the engine outputs to be slightly different, or in some cases put exhaust pipes on the left and right on the Audi and bunch them on one side on a VW, the car with separated pipes always gave a better demonstration of being powerful even if they have similar performance.
The mega slow performance and the lack of permanent 1 pedal driving (the regen doesn't stick) is a complete deal breaker for me, coming from Tesla. I guess I will be going with KIA EV6
Have you test drives the EV6? Curious how it compares to Tesla.
I love my Tessie but the lack of tax credit is lame.
I went gv60 performance
Meh. Swing and a miss from Audi to potentially make the id4 special.
their infotainment system is like waaaay better! VW is really slow and laggy.
=> Not justifying the big cash upgrade directly, but it's a thing you use every day.. so
I don’t think this car could be a worse idea. The id4 is the most uninspiring ev platform in existence.
It's just isn't quick enough. If I am buying an EV then I expect at least 4.4sec 0 to 62 mph.
It felt very plastic.
why the white lab coat? you got an advanced degree in science?
Drum brakes on an Audi. VAG has to cut corners in order to try and make a profit. Too bad.
This is a dealbreaker for me. I haven't seen drums since my 1998 Escort ZX2.
Why is visibility so bad on modern cars, style over substance.
Let's be real, this is not an Audi, it's made by VW using cheap and nasty materials, there is even painted metal inside the passenger compartment. This could have been a class leader but Audi have cut back on standard equipment so much it's not competitive. There isn't any standard equipment to speak of, everything is extra cost. Don't be fooled by the press cars, they have all of the extras. The things you really need are hidden in the option packs. You won't get the reversing camera - which you need, the electrically adjustable seats, the adjustable boot floor, no front parking sensors, no rear armrest, only one reversing light, no dynamic indicators - even basic VWs have those now and no rear light bar which could have been a great advertisement for Audi by every car on on the road. Just do a comparison of standard equipment with other Audi's to see what you are missing.
I really don’t understand how European EV will be able to compete with Tesla, and the new Korean and Chinese manufacturers in the future. The value proposition is just not there anymore, and the luxury and performance has been surpassed to say the least. I’m a 30 year BMW, VW, Audi, and Mercedes driver, and am really disappointed with the German EV offerings so far. Europeans really need to let go of their baggage and start catch up seriously.
First nice car
...and next week Zanussi go head to head with Hotpoint. Massive yawn!

The Audi is overpriced and underperforming at best. A dud ... 8 seconds to 60 is boat anchor speed. Yikes what a disappointment.
Mine goes back this month happy handback the worst car I have ever had , never getting electric again proper flawed
Great review I will definitely go for a Tesla because the value isn’t with Audi
Tesla has Shocking build quality and worst suspension I've even come across
Is this a review or just a bunch of cheap shots linked together by fodder?
The only way this show would be better is with the original hosts
My 1998 Toyota Avalon has quicker acceleration hahahaha
1998 Avalon.. 😂
Would rather walk
Who cares?
Thats amazing information about Audi: ruclips.net/video/Qz5UBtLTEI0/видео.html
Brrrrrrppppppp!
Man terrible performance for the price
The Q4 I tried out today costs £52K. While it was a really nice car to drive, I can't bring myself to pay that sort of money for it.
I don’t care about electric sport utility vehicles and I never will. Stop trying to make me.
What a quirky little "review".
😃
bro doesn't know how to launch a EV. one Foot on brake+ one foot on accelerator then let off the bake while foot is still on accelerator
You call that terrible and laggy infotainment system responsive? Maybe for a boomer but not for todays standards.
slow and overpriced, i'll just take a model 3 , thank you.
Expensive vw i.d4.Audi's failure.
Genesis GV60 is much better.
😂
that's the thing with EVs. Powertrains all feel the same, there's no added sophistication or specialness by going with a more premium or more sporty option. unlike say, upgrading from a 2L diesel to a straight 6 petrol.
Manufacturers are going to try differentiating by doing the tech overload and be objectively worse for it. of course the gullible badge conscious public won't realize.
Nope, BEVs can vary way more wildly. Single motor RWD or FWD is now much more flexible less costly choice. Torque Vectoring 1 Motor per Wheel can have a wild effect. Then there is how the heavy battery mass is shaped and distributed. Tall Box like Lotus Evijia vs Tesla skateboard platform. The configuration of a BEV will be what vastly changes it's feel. But yes the cars of the same type will have very similar feel. A CUV is sill just going to feel like a CUV.
Why is the whole review conducted in such a snarky p*ss takes way? Just review the car man, that kind of sense of humour went out of date in the 90's. We've grown up since then.
dont know but its just another boring car which indeed looks almost like any other soulless EV. I hope more to come and other energy systems as well.
Just the look from the side makes me vomit, the front is so ugly.
Omg 😳 definitely not worth the money 💰 lol 😂 my TESLA model Y zero to 60 in 3 seconds
Speed is not everything.. when you are 20-30 something it is. This is better built SUV and nicer interior
4.8 unless you have performance and that is 3.5 with roll out .. yours would be 4.0 in this test. They have faster models and they did not test.
Funny that a Q5 diesel is cheaper, has more range, a nicer interior and faster 0-60… madness
Q5 is outdated and old technic
Q5 Diesel is built on extremely old tech that has been amortized paid off. This is a 1st Gen product where there is very little production capacity. You are failing at basic concept of economics.
Slow
Sloping SUV. Silly.
Its a bad car - Motorola interface slow an buggy - old tech motor - and old tech battery - slow bad car for the big price and no range
