You can see how far down society has gone when you compare these Plays for Today with Big Brother, Love Island, Married at First Sight, Naked Dating, Take Me Out, and the rest of current rubbish. Thanks for sharing!!
Not really like-for-like comparison, the examples you gave being reality tv and game shows but ikwym. The reality tv we did have back then included the likes of Granada TV's *"Up"* series or *"The Family"* on the BBC from 1974 onwards, both of which tbf p*ssed over those from a great height. That said, for every Play For Today there was a George & Mildred or a Black & White Minstrel Show. There *was,* to be fair, an awful lot of dross around at the time just as there is today...just less OF it I s'pose.
Why don't we get plays like this on TV these days, or Dennis Potter or anything like that, I've been watching lots of 1970s plays for TV, and it's all far better than anything we have to choose from these days, Dennis Potter did try to warn us about the way TV would go
Thanks. Dinsdale Landen was excellent - many years ago, he was my favourite tv actor and I was addicted to him:) It's great to see him in such a demanding role.
Thank you for posting this remakable play, brought to life in all its paradoxical glory by Dinsdale Landen. I have enjoyed many Plays for Today since subscribing to your channel. Nostalgia for the vibrant Innes Lloyd productions soon gives way to joy that this never-to-be-repeated period of great English television should be available now, half a century later, and here in rural Australia.
Just been through cancer scare shitting myself but my fault 45 yrs boozing my worry is my worry is the young of today drinking excessively and drugs talk to them they dont listen you dont worry about your health with this till its too late
@@Londonfogeyyou can get your fix of explosions and action from the dross currently available on Netflix. However, quality television like this is now sadly lacking.
An excellent play and it makes a change that it saw people as fundamentally good instead of indulging in the dark side of human nature. Avoided the usual target clichés. Optimistic too.
I shared a flat with an alcoholic woman - it wasn't anything like as jolly and pleasant as this play. She was a nasty drunk and would invite home vagrants she met on the streets etc. Fortunately she ended up going to AA and gave up drinking.
At the end, that frozen shot if him looking back said it all: the cycle will start again until he's locked up permanently or dies. Meanwhile his wife will have a miserable death and the kids mentally scarred. Dipsomaniacs are truly horrible people, they are the closest you could imagine to being possessed.
10/26 Dinsdale looks like the character from little Britain David Walliams character lou as he runs around after wheelchair bound matt Lucas x anyone else see the resemblance ?
This would not be allowed today for two simple reasons: 1. the main character is a Christian and 2. he openly expresses what would now be considered racist views. Such a character would not be thought proper as a main protagonist in modern telly land.
This is a typical depiction of an alcoholic, back then. Completely wrong. And as if there would be vomit all over his room and asking the son to take him water that he would "Only bring back up again" and then he appears in the kitchen ranting in front of 4 adults and two children. And the adults are allowing that to go on. Then the ludicrous making the kids kiss their vomit-soaked father goodbye. It's all ridiculous.
@@executivedecision6141 my ex was the fall about type and vomited. I never fall about and only vomit say, once a year, but when I do I either use a bucket or get to the loo. Different types of alchies I guess.

Indeed as those are not dramas are they.@dee_seejay
The quality of acting is many levels above what we see nowadays.
Dinsdale Landen, a sensational actor for whom there are very few, were even then, who could match his intensity of characterization. Bless his name.
Brilliant took me 45 yrs to realise i was a alcholic only when i had severe stomach problems now sorted thankfully
My mum was an alcoholic and this was portrayed so well. She died aged 50 due to alcoholism and i was only 25 with 2 small children 😢
😢
💚
Wow how hard hitting are these plays on today's society - not far wrong this gentleman Dave

Breaking Bad? The Sopranos? The Wire? Better Call Saul? Broadwalk Empire? Succession? Mad Men? Deadwood? And that’s just off the top of my head.
Different audience today that wants instant gratification

A brilliant performance from DL.

Thank you for another great upload. I think British TV drama of that era is, typically, very well made. Dinsdale Landen is magnificent in this.
These played part in society
Brought the meessge truly home
No they do not have plays like
This anymore mores pity
Brilliant acting

So glad you are okay, take care.
We take advantage of our good health until it is too late
Man.. that guy played some part! Brilliant.
This is what the BBC/Ch4 etc should be putting on now - instead of Bake a Celebrity- Get me out of this New House - Reality TV -
I think the average viewer got fed up with tv plays set in houses with cardboard walls, they wanted lots of action and explosions etc.

Dinsdale Landen. Just wow, what a performance and great writing too. Thank you for uploading this.

Beautiful play and always brilliant performances from these great actors.
Great to see Dinsdale Landen again, sadly forgotten now. Thanks.
Agreed! Love Dinsdale Landen.
I used to get him confused with Royce Mills.
Too right you dont appreciate these actors until there gone
He was also a fine looking man in this
@Colin Glass Peter Barkworth and Dinsdale Landon... you have excellent taste, as I do!
Dinsdale Landen was a great actor and did this wonderful script proud.
Thanks. What a great performance from Dinsdale Landen. And a quick mention for Maureen O'Brien, best known as Vicki from Dr Who (to me anyway)
This is the best play for today I've seen. Had me crying. David is a lovely man and such a keen mind, therein is the rub... What a very touching tale.
Love these PFT films. Looking forward to more. Thanks for posting.
Thank you for this remarkable play!
Heavy subjects alcoholism /cancer / detoxes great acting from Dinsdale xx
Certainly one of the best episodes in this series.
Just brilliant. Thank you x
Move on as thay say
Phenomenal in every aspect.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, This stuff should be in the curriculum
thank you, the acting was second to none and real as day
Thank you! Really enjoyed this, the great Dinsdale Landen!
They always put on great telly years ago...shame they don't do it today...dumb
down telly.
Excellent play, thank you.
✌💚🇬🇧
Thank you! Looking for this for years.
Thank you. Can't wait to watch more.
I probably saw this as a kid growing up in the UK, but now as an American transplant since the 1980’s, I find it all incredibly depressing.
England was depressing cold dirty little islamd back then, weret it just duck.
Brilliant.
A very good watch
This is what the Oliver Reed household must have been like.
Lol
And my childhood except my father was a violent....couldn't watch all of this play 😢
You wouldn't no as you never knew Oliver Reed.

Thanks for uploading all these plays
This was the same priest as in Oy Vay Maria

hey, do you have the episode 'pasmore ' 1980 (series 11, episode 1)?
No, after I watch these episodes, I don't save them. I didn't have "Pasmore" previously.
Such a "tour de force" from DInsdale Landen who de-mystifies the traits of a "normal" alcoholic......
Great play but Dave comes across as a nasty arrogant tosser found no sympathy for this man at all His wife was a total enabler great play though
His wet lip is putting me off lol
TOO QUIET.
