Investigators do this sort of thing all the time.
The statistics show that a child killer is overwhelmingly likely to be someone in the house, and/or an immediate relative. Not every investigator is sharp enough to know when the exception presents itself. How many people are still falsely pointing the finger at the Ramseys for JonBenét or the McCanns for Maddie?
The next step is that a skilled interrogator can get almost anyone to confess to a crime given enough time to wear him down.
Once you combine those two points - a)assuming it's a family member, and b)ability to mentally coerce a confession - you get situations like this case here, or like Wesley Myers, a case made famous in Netflix's "The Confession Tapes".

They tried to pull the same bs when my son died. I picked up on it once they accused me, kept putting words in my mouth, and that was the second I no longer participated. They tried the lie detector thing which I initally agreed until I realized their tactics wasn't to find the truth but to break an already broken man. I learned from that experience in America you're actually guilty until proven innocent and they could care less. However, they instead view that as you're even guiltier. Only persons opinion I care about is my baby who knows how much I love him, failed in protecting him, but wouldn't have dared to ever hurt him let alone take his life. I would've taken my own before anyone else.

Just to let you know, Kevin Fox never confessed to raping his child. He agreed to their scenario that he accidentally killed Riley with the bathroom door because he must have been drinking too much and staged the rest. One of the many reasons he no longer speaks of the case. His ex wife Melissa did say on 20/20 he is happy as he can be expected and doing well.

@@kalvinflowers6178 I’m not 100% sure if they told him the extent of her assault because they never told us. Out of all the shows and updates I’ve watched on this case, they only said he confessed to “staging it to look like she was molested” but never showed us the confession. I hate to even write this but to put it this way, Eby (the killer) was in prison at the time of his capture for Riley’s murder doing 14 years for 2 counts of raping his sister. So I think we can assume the worst for Riley. Her last words were “I want my daddy”. Kevin doesn’t do interviews anymore (since 2008) but him and Melissa did have another child a little girl they named Teaghan. I already knew they had split because the marriage couldn’t survive this but it wasn’t because Melissa didn’t believe in him she always stood by him, it was just hard on the couple apparently. She did say on the update, they’re both remarried, they’re both doing well and are as happy as they can be with a huge hole in their lives.

They had eyewitnesses to the EXACT car the killer was driving, the break-in across the street could have yielded clues like fingerprints (killer didn’t wear gloves), they told the FBI to hold the DNA testing and not test most items at all instead of having them rush it, they didn’t take imprints of the shoes at the creek bank, they didn’t bother with the sneakers that had the killers name in them that they just tagged and bagged and put into evidence until the killer asked about them, after they were sued, they all kept their jobs. Very sad, wish I could see the rest of it. I'd never heard of this case. I can relate on the level that I know what it's like to be exhausted. (I'm a fulltime caregiver for a parent and I have on/off insomnia to the point where I have been up all night and have to stay awake all day to get back to normal.) So 4 hour shift plus 14 hour interrogation? By that point, you'd desperately love to sleep, so naturally he'd confess to anything and I imagine he was wanting an out. Lack of sleep is the equivalent of being drunk, you're just not in your right mind.
Hope they find the man that did it. It upsets me that so many men are just pigs. Women will go crazy and kill you, but it's probably rare for a woman who's not a teacher to be convicted of sexual assault on a minor in a case similar to this. Whereas men are accused and convicted of it all the time. I don't get it. It's like some men (not all! I know a lot of good men) just cannot control themselves. I will maintain I'm not a feminist, I just know evil when I see it.
