Back in the day, I had a sweet little Jersey named Molly. I also had four kids aged 2 to 11. I convinced my kids that Molly wouldn't give milk if anyone but me was around the barn. It was easy to hear the kids, so I knew when to ask Molly why she wasn't giving me any more milk. Didn't take too many times before I could count on having my milking meditation time just for Molly and me. I did love that cow, short teats and all. Sometimes her milk would be nearly half cream. Cream biscuits, whipped cream cake, butter, spooning cream on fresh baked bread...we ate well.
Kate every time I have a cow come back into milk I rewatch your videos, I have a new Jersey cow with the jessa teats, I learned to milk on a cow with much bigger teats and the smaller ones are definitely a learning curve! Thanks Kate your content helps my milk cow confidence!!
Great video. Love the Jersey cows. We had a Brown Swiss cow that would give about 2 1/2 to 3 gallons a milking. About the age of 16 I had to start milking at night when dad went on evening shift. Some tips from my dad. 1. Keep fingernails trimmed close. 2. Our cow would kick from time to time so dad taught me to put my head into her thigh. She cannot kick unless she shifts her weight to the back leg on the other side. When she shifts that weigh, be prepared to move. Usually a soft voice or gentle pat would prevent a kick. In spring time when the green onions were out, the milk went straight to the pigs. I just saw the kickbar part of the video. So fancy. Richie (an east Tennessee boy)
@@VenisonforDinner you are welcome. Good that you don't have wild onions. Its smell coming off the milk is bad. Grandpa said that it helped the cattle shed their winter coat. Not sure if I said but we love in East Tennessee near the Smoky Mountains. Will look for more of your videos. Richie Ps. We would let the calves have half of the milk until there were about 200 lbs then sold then. It gave us some cash money.
I don’t have a farm but I watched this whole video! One day my husband and I want to get a farm and have some cows and other animals. This video is very intriguing and informative and you had me laughing! 😄
Jessa’s teats remind me of some of our old first freshener goat teats. It does wear you out faster! I love seeing similarities and difference between goat and cow milking. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for this demonstration! I have a small teated cow and this is incredibly helpful. I do strip her quite a bit which I’ve wondered if it’s bad for her teats. It seems like causes her tears to dry out and have flakey skin. Is that an issue! I still enjoy hand milking but I’ve considered a machine if it’s harmful to her.
Literally watching this while waiting for my cows to come in for milking from their 11 acre pasture... actually held my phone up so the cows would hear Kate calling! 😂
I just got a milk cow that has been calf sharing and I took the calf off today about 5 hrs before I milked her and I had a heck of a time . This is the first time trying to milk her and I got only 4.5 cups and it took longer than you milking both cows completely. I found your comment on holding back so helpful because I feel like I failed .She is a Charlie’s jersey cross with teats between your two cows. I felt like I was stripping her for most of the time and I’m not sure if that’s not letting down or just my hands not in the best position . But I’m going to stick with it before I get a milker machine . Thank you . Did you feel it got easier as you grew the muscles necessary? She is also a first time Calver who is just a sweet heart and the last owner only milked her a handful of times before deciding that milking was to much for her so I feel for the first day without calf and in her new stanchion I finished yesterday it was still a success . That being said I so appreciate your video and it gives me hope . One question tho high up on her udder like the base of the teat there is a small abrasion. It’s not red and nicely scabbed but should I be doing something to that or only if it looks infected ? And do you “lotion” your girls after milking or what do you recommend?
Huge apologies for the delayed reply!! I’m a big fan of putting a salve on things to help them heal. Right now in the barn we have a jar of ‘amish burn and wound salve’ thats really sticky and has honey in it. It stays on well.
they hold back, you can pretty much milk as much as you want and they will still have enough. Or just leave one quarter for the calf unmilked. (this is a fun way to take care of a hard to milk quarter, as long as the calf can nurse it well)
Do your hand joints ever hurt from milking? Mine ache so bad! Especially first thing in the morning, they are super stiff and sore. As the day goes on, they loosen up and then just feel bruised. I have no idea if this is normal since we've only had a milk cow for about 2 months and this just started happening about a month ago.
You’re doing it the right way as far as I’m concerned, you can still use a stool, But as long as you’re close and comfortable that’s all that’s necessary. Your milking technique is correct, much better than a lot I have seen on here, believe me I have never seen people pull a nipple clean to the ground like I have on here. Especially with those Third World countries, it’s almost like they’re tearing the bag off of the cow! Makes me so mad the way they abuse the animals
I loved this video. It felt like hanging out with a friend while learning to milk a cow 😋 I would have loved to hear more about the grain finishing a for each and to see what you did with the milk! I'll be watching more 💖
Is it ok to squeeze both teats at the same time, instead of the right-left-right-left pattern? I start out R-L-R-L, always seem to end up squeezing both simultaneously..
I’ve been on my husband about adding a dairy cow to our farm but he is very nervous about us being tied down to a milking schedule. What is your typical milking schedule?

Have you ever milked a horse? lol After they foal out, I like to milk the mare to get colostrum to put into the freezer, just incase I need to bottle feed the foal or if friend loses a mare after foaling.

Our relationship with our cows is a special one ❤️
😂I love this!
You are such a relaxed and great teacher.
I think this is the most thoroughly explained video for hand milking. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I love that you are so precise in your explanation. For anyone brand new to this, like me, we learn more. Thank you.

This is so wholesome ❤ so educational, visual and to the point, best videos ever!!!!!
Wow, thank you!

Squeezing a teat from time to time is quite therapeutic !

Stripping shouldn’t harm her teats. Do you use a lubricant for the flakey skin?

Thank you for this very informative video. I'm still trying to talk my husband into getting a milk cow; maybe someday.
Pray for him 😉. God will change his heart.

Iam taking my notes. Next month will put it into practice. Thank you for you nice content
Exciting!! Thank you.
You have one a long way from the first milking of your first cow😁
Good job!
How do I know when to stop milking if I’m calf sharing? I’ve been afraid to milk her all the way out for fear there won’t be enough for the calf.

Hey Kate...how much land do you have total?...and how many acres does a milk need for grazing? How many acres does a meat cow need?

Just watched this video again! I’d like to like this video again 😂 thanks Kate!
Glad you liked it!!
I know you’re doing this in the winter so you don’t have problems with flies. But what do you do about the flies in the summer?
We hardly have any flies here thankfully. So we don't have to do anything.
So much work to milk a cow. Thank you for sharing.
It sure is but we think it’s worth it. Thanks for joining us here.
Is it ok to squeeze both teats at the same time, instead of the right-left-right-left pattern? I start out R-L-R-L, always seem to end up squeezing both simultaneously..
Either way is totally fine, but squeezing at the same time is more awkward I find.
How do you sit like that with out your feet falling asleep?
I’ve been on my husband about adding a dairy cow to our farm but he is very nervous about us being tied down to a milking schedule. What is your typical milking schedule?
I thought you were talking about your husband !!
Any advice on the erganomics of milking a small cow while pregnant?
Got my first jersey 3 weeks ago. Weve had dairy goats for 5 years. The cow is extra special her name is rosie
Ahh how lovely and what a sweet name.
Great job👍🏼🤠
Thanks 👍

Hallo from Egypt
Good work
Great video!!!
I love your work 💞 keep it up
Thank you so much 😀
Do you use any teat dip post milking?
No we don’t
Great vlog.
From Ontario here. Where abouts do live?.
Have you ever milked a horse? lol After they foal out, I like to milk the mare to get colostrum to put into the freezer, just incase I need to bottle feed the foal or if friend loses a mare after foaling.
Wow, never had to the need to do that. I once owned a very gentle old mare.
Can you milk wearing leather gloves?
No I don't think that would work. Being able to feel the udder and teats gives you a better idea of their health
I never work directly behind cows like you did. You either really trust her or you don't value your teeth. Getting kicked is no fun.
This more of a demonstration than how I normally milk. But, yes, I do trust this cow.
Never knew I was in the same club as a cow 🐮
Hahahahha
Never squeeze teats wrong, or you'll never hear the end of it...that goes for cows, too....
hahahahaha

2 x4, or a2 x6 and and make a t at the height you want, sit on it where it’s comfortable not if u milk across the cow, all front, all back
If you feed a gal of grain they will goin and behave at least while the eat .the grain
Yes, we do feed them grain part way through milking.
