  • We decided to make Polly (who recently had her first calf and is in milk) a milk cow. We document the training process over several days starting from zero to her being a tame milk cow.

Animals are unpredictable regardless of how "tame". Infants should not be strapped to anyone's back when milking or a lot of other farm chores. Children should not be in pens with grown hogs. I raised my kids on a homestead, but one has to be smart about the risks involved in handling a 1600 lb. animal.

From a viewing point of view, that was a fun video to watch. When I was your younger kids age, my dad used to milk a cow for the family. Then when my eldest child was a bub, we used to have fresh cow's milk again. Something special about having milk straight from the cow. Blessings from Australia.

I wish my Mom would have talked about life on the farm, but we grew up differently, and I think that was the intent, so we could grow up differently. However, she didn't realize that if she had talked about life on the farm, we would have related to her better. She just passed 10 days ago, and was 99 and a half. One key to her long life was to take care of us and herself first, and spend more time looking forward and preparing for new days to come, than looking back. That is what she said. One farm element that I think your whole family would enjoy is an outdoor Sauna. Mom did have that on her parent's farm, and My Dad also grew up with a residential, backyard Sauna. Then he put an electric powered steam Sauna in our house separate from the two regular bathrooms. But, on a farm, an outdoor one is better.

You probably heard of the famous Texas cowboy Charlie Goodnight (1836-1929). He had a steer named Old Blue that led about 8 trail drives. Goodnight is a good historic figure. He once crossed the Brazos River near Elm Creek in 1863, West of Fort Worth, Texas. River had dried up. He crossed a 20x100 mile stretch of dead Buffalo. All dead from the drought. He said in his book that the blow-flies were horrendous.
