While I agree about the historical inaccuracies of the Tudor’s costumes, at least there was some effort. Reign didn’t even try so I’m surprised they weren’t first.
The lost was based on clothing inaccuracy, not story inaccuracy. And the Tudors certainly was very terrible! Hard to tell which is the lesser of two evils though
@@inkheart151 The Tudors did a bit better with the mens costumes and the clergy. They included the French Hoods popularized by Anne Boleyn though they left out the veil covering the hair. Reign may have targetted the CW crowd they were just outright careless with costumes.
@@inkheart151 yeah, but that's everyone's point. An attempt was at least made with the fashion in The Tudors. Absolutely no attempt was made for the clothes in Reign. Just by looking at screenshots of The Tudors, you can tell it is a Tudor era period piece. You cannot tell by screenshots of Reign that it is even a period piece.
Reign wasn’t meant to be accurate. The past especially Mary queen of Scots history, a lot of it is rumoured, there are rumours that she and frances love was real and there are the other rumours that it wasn’t. The magic side of things was to give more of a storyline. And the tudors had a lot of inaccuracies aswell, I know your saying it’s more accurate. Yes I understand but a lot of Henry the 8th history is twisted and a lot is based on rumours.
@Tianruo Yang the "magic" or supernatural elements that reign showed were borderline ridiculous. I've seen kids' cartoons depicting magic in a better way.

Personally the costumes in Reign completely took me out of the show. The strapless, side strap and just completely wrong forms drove me crazy. That’s what I call “Medieval Prom”
Surprised that When Calls the Heart wasn't mentioned. At the beginning of the show the costumes were more historically accurate to the 1910s but subsequent seasons have thrown accuracy down the coal mine shaft. Their designs are so ridiculous, the costumes and hairstyles actually distract from the plot. Side ponytails?! Blue fleece coats? It deserved the number one spot.
Completely agree! I love that show, but couldnt keep watching it due to the hairstyles. Hallmark said they wanted a "softer" look. What?!? Ugh, Hallmark.
exactlyy when calls the heart would be by far the most inaccurate but they said in the start that they only doing shows that present historic events actually took place in real life.
Omg the inaccuracy in reign made me give up on the series... I just couldn’t watch it with those costumes. I mean they are beautiful and I would definitely wear them all today, but that’s the problem...
See, I knew going in that the show wasn’t aiming at being historically correct bc they had be honest and upfront that they weren’t gearing up to the show starting. I can’t remember 100% if they had also made any comments specifically on costuming per se, but I had always just expected them to not be historically correct w period correct fashion since they weren’t trying to be historically correct on what actually happened, the storyline and characters, so it was kind of a given that they wouldn’t w fashion, in my opinion at least. I also knew that they had a target demographic for that show simply bc of the channel it was on and the fact that it was another teen drama, just w a new spin on it. As a result, I knew that target demographic most likely wouldn’t be concerned w historically accurate period fashion, or even be aware of correct period fashion, and that they would probably be taking huge liberties in order to attract and keep that target demographic and maybe make the storyline, characters, etc a little bit more “relatable” for the young generation watching the show (as much as Mary Queen of Scots can be relatable to the younger generations, but, hey, at least it’s not the whole Bloody Mary angle!! Lol)! I’m a huge history lover and the period of Mary Queen of Scots falls within a larger period of time frame that I’m especially keen on and obsessed over. When my husband and I watch shows that fall during this period (or other periods of time that I’m super in to and educated on!), at the end of the show/movie I always blabber on for a bit about the various aspects they got wrong, what they left out, praising them for the aspects they got right, esp if it’s something that’s largely looked over on a regular basis or is something that they always get wrong in other shows/movies, point out small details, plots, characters, etc that are significant and are largely ignored or are portrayed incorrectly, etc etc. My husband jokes that he’s learned more about history from me than he ever has in all the schooling he’s taken! Lol. I was NOT in the target age demographic that the show was geared towards. Lol. But, since I knew going in what the show was and was not going to be or even trying to be, I had set my expectations accordingly and wasn’t ready to pounce on every incorrect thing! I just went in w the mindset of let’s watch to see what they do and if it’s enjoyable for one aspect or another, knowing that I’d be highly upset and irritated if I expected it to be historically correct in any way! I ended up enjoying the show for what it was and wasn’t upset that it wasn’t what it wasn’t trying to be, which was historically accurate! I was also hoping that maybe by making these historical characters and this time period a little bit more appealing and relatable to the younger generations, that maybe it would spark enough interest in them that they would actually want to research, learn & educated themselves about the real characters, what actually happened, the time period & the history as a whole! Honestly, there’s enough drama and crazy stuff that actually historically happened that it IS super interesting to read and learn about and is more than enough to capture your attention and suck you up into it! So I was hoping that maybe the show would provide a bridge to the younger generation getting interested in that part of history to begin w to the point that they’d go to research it further and would educate themselves about what actually happened during this time and be equally as captivated w the historically accurate events, characters, time period, etc!! I actually did see over time clear signs that a good amount of viewers were actually educating themselves on the history of that time period, character, events, etc bc I’d see them talking about it online!! I give credit to the show creators, everyone involved in making the show & the CW for at least trying something new for a teen drama instead of the same old stuff that’s been done since I was a teen and adding the aspect of history, even if it was only a little bit of accurate history, historical characters, setting it in a different time period and that time period not be set in the future or some dystopian future, etc! They definitely tried something new and it worked and was pretty successful! I also loved having something new to get to watch on a regular basis w Megan Follows!! Just seeing her work and hearing her voice brought back so many good memories associated w Anne of Green Gables!! Lol.
I think the Outlander one is an unfair example because it's mostly set in a time where your clothes would have been especially made for you in the way you ordered it and Claire is a time traveller so of course her dresses would be more modern looking unless it's just about the fabric than fair enough.
The point is the fabric wouldn’t have existed at that time. The brightly colored clothing we know of today didn’t exist until the Victorian era. That’s not to say our ancestors weren’t colorful, but bright fuchsia, purple, many greens, and especially neon colors wouldn’t have been available in the Georgian era.
Imogen Onscreen all good! And I’m with you in that I’m more willing to forgive some of outlander for that reason as well. But recent seasons where they aren’t wearing any supportive garments underneath does lose me a big.

The Tudors are way more accurate than reign. Particularly more for the men’s outfits. Yes it’s not accurate compared to history but way more accurate than reign.
Indeed the men costumes sometimes look identical to the paintings of the times, the biggest problem was the hair and shoulders of the women, but they tried. I also feel they became more accurate per season
.You could make a whole video on the inaccurate dress of the characters in reign. What really makes me mad about rain is the costuming had a chance to really define the characteristics in terms of background status in court and their slow ascension or decent ascension to power. In regards to the women Mary Queen of Scots, Catherine D Medici, Diane de Portier, and others were some of the most powerful women of the day. It sad you don't see that reflected in their dress. What you do see is an attempt to appeal to a younger audience by making the women more fashionable. Suggesting Catherine, Mary, and her ladies in waiting would naturally feel confined in the more restrictive dress of the time. This demeans the woman of power in this show by not showcasing their status through clothing or some other means. By the time reign seems to take on a more serious tone in its 4tth and final season. The modern style of dress seems to have been forgotten entirely in exchange for something similar to what was worn in the 16th century. However, this change was too late to save the show

And a SciFi show about a theme park that doesn't exist has "historically inaccurate costumes"? I'm shaken. You mean to tell me all these TV shows about fake things with people who don't exist are not historically accurate? So am I going to have to cancel my trip to West World now? 😂
What about the women in films or T.V. shows, video games or other entertainment that are supposed to be warriors but their outfits are so revealing and leave them so vulnerable that it seems like instead of being strong capable fighters it feels like they should be wearing signs that say "I want to have sex more than I want to fight but I don't know which one I want to do first!" not to mention that their outfits don't provide protection from attack or heat or cold.
Thank you so much for this list. While I can overlook Claire’s brown dress ( because I understand what the costumer was trying to covey), I, absolutely, despise the costumes from Reign. The Tudors, at least, had sumptuous fabric and the clothes looked fairly good, though not at all accurate for the time period. I’ve been a theatrical costumer for over thirty years so, usually, if I start a historically based show and the costumes aren’t accurate, I quit it immediately.
I have done costumes for community theater, different historical eras. Obviously we operate on a very low costume budget, and often have to make do with what we can find. It makes me very angry when I see these glaring inaccuracies in professional shows like these. If I had their money, I would not need to make sacrifices due to budget constraints!
I love how some TV shows about the past have accurate costumes! Because it makes me feel like I'm in time period! But what's the point if they don't have accurate costumes if it ruins the feeling....
I love "The Tudors"! The only thing that I didn't like about it, was that some of the costumes were historically inaccurate. But then, after I finished the series, I watched the first season of "Reign". And I never complained about the costumes in "The Tuders" ever again. I could not watch more then one season of "Reign" because of the costumes and music-choises. The inaccuracy bothered me just to much! (Sorry, for my bad english.)
I absolutely agree. The costumes, playing songs you'd hear in modern day rom coms, and not to mention all the historical inaccuracies in the story. I gave up after 2 seasons.

As a corseter, you ALWAYS untie a corset before unhooking the busk. I love the anachronistic costumes in "Robin Hoodie", especially when one of the female characters is literally wearing a screen-printed hoodie in the last season.
The weird thing about the Tudors is that it's sister show The Borgias, though while not perfect, is one of the better examples of good historical costuming in TV. The Borgias was just as saucy and dramatic as The Tudors, but the characters ACTUALLY dressed like 15th century renaissance Italians
My thing about the tudors is at least they TRIED to go for the silhouette popular in the 1530s. Reign completely ignored anything resembling it for any of their characters except ensemble. They even used the wrong corsetry. It made me want to SCREAM
I'd say that Outlander frequently not using corsets at all (it's visible in the sihlouettes of the newer seasons) is a worse offender. And Claire doesn't make her own fabric or spend hours and hours consulting fabric-makers on how to make modern prints, so how would this be possible? I get that modern styles of dresses would be possible within the context of the show, but only using available technology and materials.

They promised us they’d stay true to the books when they announced the show and all the way gearing up to it bc so many of us were concerned about them fucking it up. The first season (2 parts) they really did a pretty damn good job of staying true and sticking w the books as much as possible, though some of the changes I’ll never understand like Laoghaire being to one to get Claire arrested for witchcraft! We were all so excited, appreciative and supportive that first season. Then they got big egos and started fucking shit up left and right. I get so mad every time they write something completely new or change the story to something else and then proceed to try to justify why they did so or whatever. If they just stick to the damn fucking books and the impeccable research Diana did, they’d be rewarded ten times over! I know so many who’ve quit watching the show bc of these things, I just can’t quit it, I love the characters, the story and the books too much!!! Ahhhh! I wish they’d just listen to us!!
I'm actually shocked that Reign wasn't #1. All the ladies of that show were pretty much wearing modern day prom dresses lol The costumes were beautiful but so inaccurate and distracting, it took you completely out of the story. I couldn't the that show seriously. At least Tudor's tried.
I'm always amazed at kids who love 70s fashion. The club wear by Halston, etc. was fantastic, and Cher's Bob Mackie designs on her TV show were awesome, but the average crap on sale at any store was polyester ugly! You couldn't find cotton if you tried, everything was this awful, slimy, ugly "new" polyester fabric that stained easily, held onto body odor forever, and looked hideous unless you were a tall, thin model. The hippie fashions were cheap, rotten gauze housedress styles that looked like ugly sacks. Collars were huge and ridiculous looking on everyone. I remember that everyone looked awful, all the time...my mom had to wear a polyester pantsuit (with a vest!) to work as a new "uniform style". After they were washed twice, they looked hideous... Pair all that with the Dorothy Hamil haircut almost every girl had and it was the ugliest era ever. The reinterpretation of 70s style is much more fun and creative, modeled on the New York high fashion clubs.
I think that’s when we really went wrong with fashion. Before that most styles really held up and still look good to modern eyes. There’s a reason people love vintage clothes. You still look elegant in clothes from the 50s. Meanwhile I can’t even look at my parents photos from the 80s without cringing. It was all so unflattering.
I dont understand how the directors and costume designers screw up so badly. Do they not realize that their main audience is going to be history nerds? Who do they think they are going to attract with those costumes?
I think it comes from a need to make these actors “sexy” and also not appreciating the aesthetics of the era. Sandition feels like it’s almost embarrassed of regency fashion meanwhile Emma 2020 is a love letter to it. And one movie looks phenomenal, and the show.... not so much
SOME women did wear their corsets too tightly, in the same way that some modern women have heels that are too high despite the back pain it causes. That's why fainting spells where a thing in the 19th century. Reign should've been #1, not the Tudors. Westworld should not be on the list, since it actually takes place in the future.
So the idea of tight lacing is mostly a myth. It happened a little bit in the Victorian era. Corset are actually much more supportive and healthy then bras. If they fit properly, and are Worn properly. Bernadette Banners does a good video on it. I don’t mean to be jumping your case, but the misconception of corsets and stays is infuriating to me, they’re really awesome.
Some people tight-laced, but most didn't and you would think a woman trying to build a career in law enforcement (if I remember the female character in question correctly) would not. They also would not be wearing it next to the skin in any case.
I am surprised that, When Calls the Heart, is not number one, I think that only one or two episodes of the first season were correct for the time, that is it, costume colors, styles, and hairstyles. after that, everything else was invented.
The costumer on "Reign" was quite open about the inaccuracies of the outfit. She stated that she was appealing to a younger audience (the Millennials) who would look at the costumes and say, "I might wear that." Hell, I'm in my eighth decade--and I'd wear some of those outfits! Furthermore, she stated that they weren't making a documentary, they were making a dramatization of events that happened about 600 years ago. I DO wish that some channels on RUclips would learn the difference between DOCUMENTARY and DRAMATIZATION.
An old CBBC show called Leonardo about the life of a young Leonardo Da Vinci had the characters, especially the main character, run around renaissance Florence in skinny jeans and converse. They didn’t even try to hide it! I understand it not being on the list though because it was very short lived.
The outlander dress , although prints were not even a thought at the time there were occasionally and possibly have been a hand painted fabrics…of course if it were embroidery it would be more believable as many fabrics that were jacquard would have embroidery right on top of them…always in strategic and symmetrical.
Westworld is meant to be a futuristic or even steampunk, it’s not a period drama. Sanditon is one of the worst period dramas that has Jane Austen’s name on it. No wonder it was cancelled for being such a disappointment.
Sandition was such a disappointment and really is an Austen production in name only. There’s one Spenser where the buttons are literally crooked! It takes 3 seconds to sew on a button. The whole show just comes across as so lazy to me.
Maddie Ray Masterpiece has been putting out bad dramas lately with campy and lazy acting in shows like Sanditon, even my friends who watched it said it was very lowbrow.
Maddie Ray Downton Abbey was their peak. After that show ended it’s run, PBS has been so desperate trying to get another successful drama, they keep getting mediocre costume dramas that feel so campy and forgettable.

That's just plain being lazy. What's even funnier in a period drama costume IG account Reign's fans tried to excuse the inaccuracies saying it's under "fantasy." drama. Very lame!
But some of these were used purposefully to effect... like Outlander, she was from the late 40's during which this would have been a chic and super stylish style, and that dress was made probably from her design. The whole point of their foray into Paris was for them to stand out... Also in War and Peace, All the styles in the part scenes had a very greek feel which I totally think was purposeful. And Charlotte was the only one in Sanditon to wear her hair down like that, which means it was a conscious choice, probably used to show how unfussy and real she was compared to everyone else. Yes! It can be annoying when shows have glaring inaccuracies but when it's used to effect, when its purposeful... I have no complaints.
You articulated exactly why I’m fine with some of outlanders choices over Sandition. Outlander definitely stretches the bounds of Georgian style/ uses inaccurate colors but they managed to create some beautiful gowns that have a lot of intent. As for Sandition, even the up dos they manage to do aren’t even correct to the era. Half the women look like they’re wearing styles from the Edwardian era. It just comes across as lazy and without research. And I’m confident calling it lazy as opposed to low budget because one of the Spenser’s on one of the wealthier characters they can’t even manage to sew the buttons on straight for. It takes like 5 minutes to sew on a button.
@@maddieray3668 I can agree to it in Sanditon, it was a little lazy in the costume department, but I find that to be usually true of PBS. It just doesn't seem to be something they focus as hard on... which is fine. Sometimes I think people choose to focus more on other aspects which I'm okay with, or sometimes they choose to throw the rulebook out altogether like on Reign. I actually kinda liked that about Reign, they didn't even try and it gave the show it's own feel.
Bea Kweller I think my biggest problem is just when they half a** it. Excuse my French. Rein you can hardly call a period drama because you’re right it’s not even trying. The new Catherine the great I don’t judge as hard because it’s obviously not going for 100% historical accuracy as it’s intent and still has great costumes anyways. Sandition is right in the middle. It looks like they just cobbled a bunch of stuff together and called it a day. There wasn’t much intent about what the actual costume pieces were saying or whether they fit with the theme of the show. There was no real vision behind it. Just laziness with the fake excuse of wanting them to be sexy.
For the last time corsets were NOT tortured devices, they were NOT a way for men to control women; they WERE basically sports bras. They were made to help support those dresses. If you ever tried to walk in those dresses without a corset it will feel as if your dragging a soaking wet dress. I know because I wear corsets many times. Get one that is your size, just like everything other piece of clothing you own and DON’T tight lace them and you’ll be fine.
If you want historically accurate costumes and a pretty accurate retelling of a Tudor piece: The Six Wives of Henry VIII (1970) and Henry VIII and his Six Wives (1972). Keith Michell is Henry in both and my favorite Henry. He plays him very well. Neither are perfect. However, the budget for the 1970s mini series was miniscule and they still did a fantastic job with the costumes. Also, the miniseries is very obviously stage actors so there's going to be a lot of overacting.

Just gotta thank you for mentioning corsets! I watched the Alienist for the first time last week and I was so disappointed that they portrayed Sarah Howard as a reluctant tight-lacer and with no chemise! I wish costume departments would do more research when they’re actually trying for historical accuracy
@Micaela Gauthier that is true, but they could have at least got the outfits of real life characters right. The king and queen's outfits were ok, but did they really need to make the cardinal wear black?

Damn, and The Tudors is one of my favorite shows. While I know it's overly romanticized and dramatic, and certainly not 100% accurate by any means, I still love it.
Yes, but considering the fact that it's a television show that needed some tension, it obviously had to change some aspects. But overall , i think the costumes were not that bad, the cast was really great.
At 6:45 the Outlander men's Highland Scottish costumes are wildly inaccurate, for example wearing knee boots/riding boots with kilts. Highland gentry wore riding boots with breeches while riding, kilts were never worn riding and were always worn with the traditional patterned knee-socks and ordinary brogues (though the very poor went barefoot). Another glaring thing is that the brown & grey colour-scheme seen on the Outlander tartans was invented in 1949 by the weaver D C Dalgliesh. We have a large number of 18th century colour portraits painted from life, and the tartans are usually red-based.
I don't care if Reign was super inaccurate. It was obvious they weren't going for accuracy right off the bat. Everyone looked gorgeous all the time! It was Historical Fanfiction and I LOVED it!
Even historical fanfiction can have degrees of accuracy. Look at the books covers of Philippa Gregory's novel's like The Other Boleyn Girl that were stylized.
@@asakiijrii The BBC actually had a lower budget for costumes for shows like Elizabeth R and the Six Wives of Henry the VIII but they made it authentic enough. Reign being on a US network would've had more resources than JC Penney. There are things called costume shops which they can rent out proper costumes.
Fun fact, ruffs were almost exclusively floating necklaces when worn by Queen Elizabeth. This was because in order to maintain that iconic shape, they had to be washed and starched (a lengthy, expensive, days-long process) more often than the gown itself. The neckline of the dress is inaccurate though, as it would have been higher to make it appear as though the two connected. Also, as she was the "Virgin Queen" and a bastard, she wouldn't have been caught dead showing that much skin in court.
I don’t even know the Tudors was on the list shit you can see the inaccuracies from the intro I feel like they wanted to tell a story but make it interesting and modern but the show was still good lol
Honestly I’m watching a TV show for entertainment value, not picking it apart for historical accuracy. They are not documentaries, so a certain amount of liberties are expected....at least to me.
Reign was definitely worse than the Tudors. The shapes of the overall Tudors dresses were more historically accurate. Reigns dresses were too modern by any standard.
Seeing that „no chemise“ thing on the Alienist made me so angry, I quit watching. ... But also: You can‘t just open a laced corset by the busk hooks without loosening the laces in the back. there would simply be too much tension on the busk. You could probably force it but risk bending/damaging the busk.
The bigger problem with Robin Hood BBC in terms of costuming is that often Marian is in outfits that don't work at all rather than all the needless lacing. The fans and fandom complain about Marian's outfits much more often we do about the lacing issue. They had Marian wearing a sweater over her dress in one episode.
Reign should be number one, imo. The costumes look like old prom dresses, plus the historical inaccuracies were too much to swallow. I could have overlooked the costumes if the history had been accurate. As a result, I watched one episode, couldn't watch it anymore.

I understand that filmmakers have to change up small things in films, but this was ridiculous. Mary's life was a soap opera just as it was, and they took it and make it even more soap opera-ish. @@ChristChickAutistic its badly acted, the costumes feel like I'm watching a modern day hollywood award show, they play songs you'd hear in a high school prom, even the romance starts getting on your nerves after a while, not to mention it's as far away from actual history as you can get. For someone who's a huge history nerd like me I only watch historical period dramas to learn something about what actually happened. And most of the characters including Mary herself were pretty hard to like at times.

At least The Tudors stuck to the real history for the most part, and it had high caliber actors and actresses, even if the costumes weren't as historically accurate. My daughter is the one who discovered Reign, she knows that Tudor and Reformation history is one of my favorite periods, but she didn't know how fast and loose they played with the facts. We both watched the one episode and agreed it was trash.
One other thing about Outlander. There is no way Claire would know about Christian Dior's New Look since it came out after she went through the stones.
Another one that had costume inaccuracies was Wonder Woman. Yeah I know it's a superhero movie but it's set on WWI but the German soldiers have WWII uniforms!! It just irked me a lot. There were a few other inaccuracies as well but they weren't costume inaccuracies

not really? spend five minutes looking up any extant garments of the period and you can tell the shape. also if you know anything about corsets (as a person creating corsets should) you'll know the busk was upside down. wearing a whole ass garment upside down is a pretty big mistake
@@slippynuttercrunch Perhaps, but this list is titled "Top 10 Most Historically Inaccurate Costumes on TV", and this example is so minor compared to everything else, as most of the others would seam out of place even if you know nothing about the subject.
Rein was well awful, and not just for the clothes, the way everyone talked, it was all wrong. There were certain ways to talk to others in the 16th century and it was not this informal valley-girlish style at all. It was formal and elegant and the costumes were horrible. They could have shown off the beautiful gowns of the era but chose not to. I watched five minutes of this total before I turned it off.
I will say that as someone who studies costume design and fashion history, some of these “inaccuracies” aren’t as inaccurate as this video would leave you to believe. There’s definitely some exaggeration of elements, but it’s not necessarily inaccurate. Also, as a costume designer doing “period”, there is usually a certain level of modernity that works it’s way in to avoid alienating the audience from the world of the piece.
I really love the „costumes“/dresses in Reign though. I don’t know why but the historical inaccuracy doesn’t bother me there. They certainly didn’t try, so I’m just enjoying the various interesting modern designs in the show. What bothers me is historical inaccuracy when it’s simply unnecessary or based on poor research when the overall show is supposed to be historical accurate.
I’m not sure what you mean by Outlander being known for exquisite costumes. Among costume historians, it is well known for having huge costume mistakes. The knitted garments are particularly egregious. Knitted shawls simply didn’t exist in the 18th c. Nor did cables or chunky knits.

The fact in Outlander not Claire or any other characters in the 1740's France was wearing a Robe a la Francaise it's the actual error. We never saw an Outlander lady wearing the Watteau Pliegues of the Robe a la Francaise, wich is very sad. The only example in the series is an emerald gown that isnta Robe a la Francaise, actually it's a Robe a la Piemontaise
They don’t actually care, they just want to pump out as much crap content as possible, as fast as possible, w the least amount of work possible, so they can make the most money as possible! That’s why the majority of their lists are based on opinions or are subjective! Them praising costuming in the new Little Women just shows their ass and that they don’t actually know what they’re talking about or do any research at all!!
Lucia Di Lazzaro I only occasionally watch when I just need something on I don’t really care about or on the odd occasion I see something that I’m interested in and want to see if they can do a good job or not, but I’m always disappointed!! I had to go back and actually listen to the part the said Rudolph Valentino was a designer again bc I couldn’t believe they were actually saying that, let alone on a video where they’re criticizing other inaccuracies in shows!! While I agree about the historical inaccuracies of the Tudor’s costumes, at least there was some effort. Reign didn’t even try so I’m surprised they weren’t first.
I didn’t even bother to watch from how lazy the historical “research” was.
Reign was far more terrible than the Tudors. This list should be revisited.
The lost was based on clothing inaccuracy, not story inaccuracy. And the Tudors certainly was very terrible! Hard to tell which is the lesser of two evils though

Just by looking at screenshots of The Tudors, you can tell it is a Tudor era period piece. You cannot tell by screenshots of Reign that it is even a period piece.

Reign wasn’t meant to be accurate. The past especially Mary queen of Scots history, a lot of it is rumoured, there are rumours that she and frances love was real and there are the other rumours that it wasn’t. The magic side of things was to give more of a storyline. And the tudors had a lot of inaccuracies aswell, I know your saying it’s more accurate. Yes I understand but a lot of Henry the 8th history is twisted and a lot is based on rumours.

Surprised that When Calls the Heart wasn't mentioned. At the beginning of the show the costumes were more historically accurate to the 1910s but subsequent seasons have thrown accuracy down the coal mine shaft. Their designs are so ridiculous, the costumes and hairstyles actually distract from the plot. Side ponytails?! Blue fleece coats? It deserved the number one spot.

See, I knew going in that the show wasn’t aiming at being historically correct bc they had be honest and upfront that they weren’t gearing up to the show starting. I can’t remember 100% if they had also made any comments specifically on costuming per se, but I had always just expected them to not be historically correct w period correct fashion since they weren’t trying to be historically correct on what actually happened, the storyline and characters, so it was kind of a given that they wouldn’t w fashion, in my opinion at least.
I also knew that they had a target demographic for that show simply bc of the channel it was on and the fact that it was another teen drama, just w a new spin on it. As a result, I knew that target demographic most likely wouldn’t be concerned w historically accurate period fashion, or even be aware of correct period fashion, and that they would probably be taking huge liberties in order to attract and keep that target demographic and maybe make the storyline, characters, etc a little bit more “relatable” for the young generation watching the show (as much as Mary Queen of Scots can be relatable to the younger generations, but, hey, at least it’s not the whole Bloody Mary angle!! Lol)!
I’m a huge history lover and the period of Mary Queen of Scots falls within a larger period of time frame that I’m especially keen on and obsessed over. When my husband and I watch shows that fall during this period (or other periods of time that I’m super in to and educated on!), at the end of the show/movie I always blabber on for a bit about the various aspects they got wrong, what they left out, praising them for the aspects they got right, esp if it’s something that’s largely looked over on a regular basis or is something that they always get wrong in other shows/movies, point out small details, plots, characters, etc that are significant and are largely ignored or are portrayed incorrectly, etc etc. My husband jokes that he’s learned more about history from me than he ever has in all the schooling he’s taken! Lol.
I was NOT in the target age demographic that the show was geared towards. Lol. But, since I knew going in what the show was and was not going to be or even trying to be, I had set my expectations accordingly and wasn’t ready to pounce on every incorrect thing! I just went in w the mindset of let’s watch to see what they do and if it’s enjoyable for one aspect or another, knowing that I’d be highly upset and irritated if I expected it to be historically correct in any way! I ended up enjoying the show for what it was and wasn’t upset that it wasn’t what it wasn’t trying to be, which was historically accurate!
I was also hoping that maybe by making these historical characters and this time period a little bit more appealing and relatable to the younger generations, that maybe it would spark enough interest in them that they would actually want to research, learn & educated themselves about the real characters, what actually happened, the time period & the history as a whole! Honestly, there’s enough drama and crazy stuff that actually historically happened that it IS super interesting to read and learn about and is more than enough to capture your attention and suck you up into it! So I was hoping that maybe the show would provide a bridge to the younger generation getting interested in that part of history to begin w to the point that they’d go to research it further and would educate themselves about what actually happened during this time and be equally as captivated w the historically accurate events, characters, time period, etc!! I actually did see over time clear signs that a good amount of viewers were actually educating themselves on the history of that time period, character, events, etc bc I’d see them talking about it online!!
I give credit to the show creators, everyone involved in making the show & the CW for at least trying something new for a teen drama instead of the same old stuff that’s been done since I was a teen and adding the aspect of history, even if it was only a little bit of accurate history, historical characters, setting it in a different time period and that time period not be set in the future or some dystopian future, etc! They definitely tried something new and it worked and was pretty successful!
I also loved having something new to get to watch on a regular basis w Megan Follows!! Just seeing her work and hearing her voice brought back so many good memories associated w Anne of Green Gables!! Lol.

I think the Outlander one is an unfair example because it's mostly set in a time where your clothes would have been especially made for you in the way you ordered it and Claire is a time traveller so of course her dresses would be more modern looking unless it's just about the fabric than fair enough.

The point is the fabric wouldn’t have existed at that time. The brightly colored clothing we know of today didn’t exist until the Victorian era. That’s not to say our ancestors weren’t colorful, but bright fuchsia, purple, many greens, and especially neon colors wouldn’t have been available in the Georgian era.

Indeed the men costumes sometimes look identical to the paintings of the times, the biggest problem was the hair and shoulders of the women, but they tried. I also feel they became more accurate per season

.You could make a whole video on the inaccurate dress of the characters in reign. What really makes me mad about rain is the costuming had a chance to really define the characteristics in terms of background status in court and their slow ascension or decent ascension to power. In regards to the women Mary Queen of Scots, Catherine D Medici, Diane de Portier, and others were some of the most powerful women of the day. It sad you don't see that reflected in their dress. What you do see is an attempt to appeal to a younger audience by making the women more fashionable. Suggesting Catherine, Mary, and her ladies in waiting would naturally feel confined in the more restrictive dress of the time. This demeans the woman of power in this show by not showcasing their status through clothing or some other means. By the time reign seems to take on a more serious tone in its 4tth and final season. The modern style of dress seems to have been forgotten entirely in exchange for something similar to what was worn in the 16th century. However, this change was too late to save the show

What about the women in films or T.V. shows, video games or other entertainment that are supposed to be warriors but their outfits are so revealing and leave them so vulnerable that it seems like instead of being strong capable fighters it feels like they should be wearing signs that say "I want to have sex more than I want to fight but I don't know which one I want to do first!" not to mention that their outfits don't provide protection from attack or heat or cold.
Thank you so much for this list. While I can overlook Claire’s brown dress ( because I understand what the costumer was trying to covey), I, absolutely, despise the costumes from Reign. The Tudors, at least, had sumptuous fabric and the clothes looked fairly good, though not at all accurate for the time period. I’ve been a theatrical costumer for over thirty years so, usually, if I start a historically based show and the costumes aren’t accurate, I quit it immediately.
I have done costumes for community theater, different historical eras. Obviously we operate on a very low costume budget, and often have to make do with what we can find. It makes me very angry when I see these glaring inaccuracies in professional shows like these. If I had their money, I would not need to make sacrifices due to budget constraints!
I love how some TV shows about the past have accurate costumes! Because it makes me feel like I'm in time period! But what's the point if they don't have accurate costumes if it ruins the feeling....

As a corseter, you ALWAYS untie a corset before unhooking the busk. I love the anachronistic costumes in "Robin Hoodie", especially when one of the female characters is literally wearing a screen-printed hoodie in the last season.
The weird thing about the Tudors is that it's sister show The Borgias, though while not perfect, is one of the better examples of good historical costuming in TV. The Borgias was just as saucy and dramatic as The Tudors, but the characters ACTUALLY dressed like 15th century renaissance Italians

My thing about the tudors is at least they TRIED to go for the silhouette popular in the 1530s. Reign completely ignored anything resembling it for any of their characters except ensemble. They even used the wrong corsetry. It made me want to SCREAM
I'd say that Outlander frequently not using corsets at all (it's visible in the sihlouettes of the newer seasons) is a worse offender. And Claire doesn't make her own fabric or spend hours and hours consulting fabric-makers on how to make modern prints, so how would this be possible? I get that modern styles of dresses would be possible within the context of the show, but only using available technology and materials.
The latest season is a different costume designer. Honestly, it has ruined the show for me.

They promised us they’d stay true to the books when they announced the show and all the way gearing up to it bc so many of us were concerned about them fucking it up. The first season (2 parts) they really did a pretty damn good job of staying true and sticking w the books as much as possible, though some of the changes I’ll never understand like Laoghaire being to one to get Claire arrested for witchcraft! We were all so excited, appreciative and supportive that first season. Then they got big egos and started fucking shit up left and right. I get so mad every time they write something completely new or change the story to something else and then proceed to try to justify why they did so or whatever. If they just stick to the damn fucking books and the impeccable research Diana did, they’d be rewarded ten times over! I know so many who’ve quit watching the show bc of these things, I just can’t quit it, I love the characters, the story and the books too much!!! Ahhhh! I wish they’d just listen to us!!
I'm actually shocked that Reign wasn't #1. All the ladies of that show were pretty much wearing modern day prom dresses lol The costumes were beautiful but so inaccurate and distracting, it took you completely out of the story. I couldn't the that show seriously. At least Tudor's tried.
I'm always amazed at kids who love 70s fashion. The club wear by Halston, etc. was fantastic, and Cher's Bob Mackie designs on her TV show were awesome, but the average crap on sale at any store was polyester ugly! You couldn't find cotton if you tried, everything was this awful, slimy, ugly "new" polyester fabric that stained easily, held onto body odor forever, and looked hideous unless you were a tall, thin model. The hippie fashions were cheap, rotten gauze housedress styles that looked like ugly sacks. Collars were huge and ridiculous looking on everyone. I remember that everyone looked awful, all the time...my mom had to wear a polyester pantsuit (with a vest!) to work as a new "uniform style". After they were washed twice, they looked hideous...
Pair all that with the Dorothy Hamil haircut almost every girl had and it was the ugliest era ever. The reinterpretation of 70s style is much more fun and creative, modeled on the New York high fashion clubs.
I think that’s when we really went wrong with fashion. Before that most styles really held up and still look good to modern eyes. There’s a reason people love vintage clothes. You still look elegant in clothes from the 50s. Meanwhile I can’t even look at my parents photos from the 80s without cringing. It was all so unflattering.
I dont understand how the directors and costume designers screw up so badly. Do they not realize that their main audience is going to be history nerds? Who do they think they are going to attract with those costumes?
I think it comes from a need to make these actors “sexy” and also not appreciating the aesthetics of the era. Sandition feels like it’s almost embarrassed of regency fashion meanwhile Emma 2020 is a love letter to it. And one movie looks phenomenal, and the show.... not so much
SOME women did wear their corsets too tightly, in the same way that some modern women have heels that are too high despite the back pain it causes. That's why fainting spells where a thing in the 19th century.
Reign should've been #1, not the Tudors.
Westworld should not be on the list, since it actually takes place in the future.
So the idea of tight lacing is mostly a myth. It happened a little bit in the Victorian era. Corset are actually much more supportive and healthy then bras. If they fit properly, and are Worn properly. Bernadette Banners does a good video on it. I don’t mean to be jumping your case, but the misconception of corsets and stays is infuriating to me, they’re really awesome.
Some people tight-laced, but most didn't and you would think a woman trying to build a career in law enforcement (if I remember the female character in question correctly) would not. They also would not be wearing it next to the skin in any case.

The costumer on "Reign" was quite open about the inaccuracies of the outfit. She stated that she was appealing to a younger audience (the Millennials) who would look at the costumes and say, "I might wear that." Hell, I'm in my eighth decade--and I'd wear some of those outfits! Furthermore, she stated that they weren't making a documentary, they were making a dramatization of events that happened about 600 years ago. I DO wish that some channels on RUclips would learn the difference between DOCUMENTARY and DRAMATIZATION.
An old CBBC show called Leonardo about the life of a young Leonardo Da Vinci had the characters, especially the main character, run around renaissance Florence in skinny jeans and converse. They didn’t even try to hide it! I understand it not being on the list though because it was very short lived.
The outlander dress , although prints were not even a thought at the time there were occasionally and possibly have been a hand painted fabrics…of course if it were embroidery it would be more believable as many fabrics that were jacquard would have embroidery right on top of them…always in strategic and symmetrical.
Westworld is meant to be a futuristic or even steampunk, it’s not a period drama. Sanditon is one of the worst period dramas that has Jane Austen’s name on it. No wonder it was cancelled for being such a disappointment.
Sandition was such a disappointment and really is an Austen production in name only. There’s one Spenser where the buttons are literally crooked! It takes 3 seconds to sew on a button. The whole show just comes across as so lazy to me.
Maddie Ray Masterpiece has been putting out bad dramas lately with campy and lazy acting in shows like Sanditon, even my friends who watched it said it was very lowbrow.

Maddie Ray Downton Abbey was their peak. After that show ended it’s run, PBS has been so desperate trying to get another successful drama, they keep getting mediocre costume dramas that feel so campy and forgettable.

But some of these were used purposefully to effect... like Outlander, she was from the late 40's during which this would have been a chic and super stylish style, and that dress was made probably from her design. The whole point of their foray into Paris was for them to stand out...
Also in War and Peace, All the styles in the part scenes had a very greek feel which I totally think was purposeful.
And Charlotte was the only one in Sanditon to wear her hair down like that, which means it was a conscious choice, probably used to show how unfussy and real she was compared to everyone else.
Yes! It can be annoying when shows have glaring inaccuracies but when it's used to effect, when its purposeful... I have no complaints.
You articulated exactly why I’m fine with some of outlanders choices over Sandition. Outlander definitely stretches the bounds of Georgian style/ uses inaccurate colors but they managed to create some beautiful gowns that have a lot of intent. As for Sandition, even the up dos they manage to do aren’t even correct to the era. Half the women look like they’re wearing styles from the Edwardian era. It just comes across as lazy and without research. And I’m confident calling it lazy as opposed to low budget because one of the Spenser’s on one of the wealthier characters they can’t even manage to sew the buttons on straight for. It takes like 5 minutes to sew on a button.
@@maddieray3668 I can agree to it in Sanditon, it was a little lazy in the costume department, but I find that to be usually true of PBS. It just doesn't seem to be something they focus as hard on... which is fine. Sometimes I think people choose to focus more on other aspects which I'm okay with, or sometimes they choose to throw the rulebook out altogether like on Reign. I actually kinda liked that about Reign, they didn't even try and it gave the show it's own feel.
Bea Kweller I think my biggest problem is just when they half a** it. Excuse my French. Rein you can hardly call a period drama because you’re right it’s not even trying. The new Catherine the great I don’t judge as hard because it’s obviously not going for 100% historical accuracy as it’s intent and still has great costumes anyways. Sandition is right in the middle. It looks like they just cobbled a bunch of stuff together and called it a day. There wasn’t much intent about what the actual costume pieces were saying or whether they fit with the theme of the show. There was no real vision behind it. Just laziness with the fake excuse of wanting them to be sexy.

For the last time corsets were NOT tortured devices, they were NOT a way for men to control women; they WERE basically sports bras. They were made to help support those dresses. If you ever tried to walk in those dresses without a corset it will feel as if your dragging a soaking wet dress. I know because I wear corsets many times. Get one that is your size, just like everything other piece of clothing you own and DON’T tight lace them and you’ll be fine.

If you want historically accurate costumes and a pretty accurate retelling of a Tudor piece: The Six Wives of Henry VIII (1970) and Henry VIII and his Six Wives (1972). Keith Michell is Henry in both and my favorite Henry. He plays him very well. Neither are perfect. However, the budget for the 1970s mini series was miniscule and they still did a fantastic job with the costumes. Also, the miniseries is very obviously stage actors so there's going to be a lot of overacting.
Always thought the "Vikings" clothing was a little off, still an amazing show though!

Just gotta thank you for mentioning corsets! I watched the Alienist for the first time last week and I was so disappointed that they portrayed Sarah Howard as a reluctant tight-lacer and with no chemise! I wish costume departments would do more research when they’re actually trying for historical accuracy

The Musketeers tried somewhat for accuracy, but being a BBC show, it was never going to be perfect.
@Micaela Gauthier that is true, but they could have at least got the outfits of real life characters right. The king and queen's outfits were ok, but did they really need to make the cardinal wear black?

@Micaela Gauthier yeah. I absolutely loved that programme a couple of years ago, but as I’m watching it again, I have noticed a lot of inaccuracies with it (especially the first season). It’s still good tho.

Damn, and The Tudors is one of my favorite shows. While I know it's overly romanticized and dramatic, and certainly not 100% accurate by any means, I still love it.
Yes, but considering the fact that it's a television show that needed some tension, it obviously had to change some aspects. But overall , i think the costumes were not that bad, the cast was really great.
At 6:45 the Outlander men's Highland Scottish costumes are wildly inaccurate, for example wearing knee boots/riding boots with kilts. Highland gentry wore riding boots with breeches while riding, kilts were never worn riding and were always worn with the traditional patterned knee-socks and ordinary brogues (though the very poor went barefoot). Another glaring thing is that the brown & grey colour-scheme seen on the Outlander tartans was invented in 1949 by the weaver D C Dalgliesh. We have a large number of 18th century colour portraits painted from life, and the tartans are usually red-based.
I don't care if Reign was super inaccurate. It was obvious they weren't going for accuracy right off the bat. Everyone looked gorgeous all the time! It was Historical Fanfiction and I LOVED it!
Even historical fanfiction can have degrees of accuracy. Look at the books covers of Philippa Gregory's novel's like The Other Boleyn Girl that were stylized.
It's like the costume designer from Reign just hit up a JCPenney prom section and handed it out on set.
It's kind of what she did because she had hardly any budget and was supposed to make it attractive for teenage girls

@@asakiijrii The BBC actually had a lower budget for costumes for shows like Elizabeth R and the Six Wives of Henry the VIII but they made it authentic enough. Reign being on a US network would've had more resources than JC Penney.
There are things called costume shops which they can rent out proper costumes.
Fun fact, ruffs were almost exclusively floating necklaces when worn by Queen Elizabeth. This was because in order to maintain that iconic shape, they had to be washed and starched (a lengthy, expensive, days-long process) more often than the gown itself. The neckline of the dress is inaccurate though, as it would have been higher to make it appear as though the two connected. Also, as she was the "Virgin Queen" and a bastard, she wouldn't have been caught dead showing that much skin in court.
I don’t even know the Tudors was on the list shit you can see the inaccuracies from the intro I feel like they wanted to tell a story but make it interesting and modern but the show was still good lol
Honestly I’m watching a TV show for entertainment value, not picking it apart for historical accuracy. They are not documentaries, so a certain amount of liberties are expected....at least to me.

I would of billed reign above tudors. As you said yourself wasnt even trying. Atlesst the tutor gowns were the right style just to much skin
Reign was definitely worse than the Tudors. The shapes of the overall Tudors dresses were more historically accurate. Reigns dresses were too modern by any standard.
Seeing that „no chemise“ thing on the Alienist made me so angry, I quit watching. ... But also: You can‘t just open a laced corset by the busk hooks without loosening the laces in the back. there would simply be too much tension on the busk. You could probably force it but risk bending/damaging the busk.

The bigger problem with Robin Hood BBC in terms of costuming is that often Marian is in outfits that don't work at all rather than all the needless lacing. The fans and fandom complain about Marian's outfits much more often we do about the lacing issue. They had Marian wearing a sweater over her dress in one episode.

Reign should be number one, imo. The costumes look like old prom dresses, plus the historical inaccuracies were too much to swallow. I could have overlooked the costumes if the history had been accurate. As a result, I watched one episode, couldn't watch it anymore.
Don't bother, it's a pretty terrible show and most of the characters are just meh or really hard to root for!

I understand that filmmakers have to change up small things in films, but this was ridiculous. Mary's life was a soap opera just as it was, and they took it and make it even more soap opera-ish. Plus it was badly acted.
@@ChristChickAutistic its badly acted, the costumes feel like I'm watching a modern day hollywood award show, they play songs you'd hear in a high school prom, even the romance starts getting on your nerves after a while, not to mention it's as far away from actual history as you can get. For someone who's a huge history nerd like me I only watch historical period dramas to learn something about what actually happened. And most of the characters including Mary herself were pretty hard to like at times.
@@obsessivefangirl5055 same here. When you're a huge history nut like we both are shows like this are very irritating. At least The Tudors stuck to the real history for the most part, and it had high caliber actors and actresses, even if the costumes weren't as historically accurate. My daughter is the one who discovered Reign, she knows that Tudor and Reformation history is one of my favorite periods, but she didn't know how fast and loose they played with the facts. We both watched the one episode and agreed it was trash.
One other thing about Outlander. There is no way Claire would know about Christian Dior's New Look since it came out after she went through the stones.

Another one that had costume inaccuracies was Wonder Woman. Yeah I know it's a superhero movie but it's set on WWI but the German soldiers have WWII uniforms!! It just irked me a lot. There were a few other inaccuracies as well but they weren't costume inaccuracies

For me I think it's interesting that so few series really try to make their costumes historically accurate, mostly because they want them to be "sexy"
Do a top 10 on most historically accurate costumes on TV.
Not to mention that people in the 1500’s wore caps and the Tudors clearly do not wear caps. (I don’t watch the show, but I’ve seen enough sneak peeks to know it’s bad).
I prefer the costumes in the Tudors way more then Reign.

No. That’s the prostitute from the french brothel we see in the first episode. John asks her to pretend to be his first fiancée, Julia Pratt, who left him for another man. He explains it to Lazlo at some point in season 1
According to what I know about elizabethan fashion, the ruff doesn't have to be attached to a dress and were often worn with low-necklined gowns.

not really? spend five minutes looking up any extant garments of the period and you can tell the shape. also if you know anything about corsets (as a person creating corsets should) you'll know the busk was upside down. wearing a whole ass garment upside down is a pretty big mistake

Rein was well awful, and not just for the clothes, the way everyone talked, it was all wrong. There were certain ways to talk to others in the 16th century and it was not this informal valley-girlish style at all. It was formal and elegant and the costumes were horrible. They could have shown off the beautiful gowns of the era but chose not to. I watched five minutes of this total before I turned it off.

TV and movies and other forms of entertainment are (or should be) about escapism, not realism. I don't think accuracy should matter.
I will say that as someone who studies costume design and fashion history, some of these “inaccuracies” aren’t as inaccurate as this video would leave you to believe. There’s definitely some exaggeration of elements, but it’s not necessarily inaccurate. Also, as a costume designer doing “period”, there is usually a certain level of modernity that works it’s way in to avoid alienating the audience from the world of the piece.
So I'm not the only one who found Henry the VIII's sleeveless outfits odd...
One thing they didn't mention about lacing was that medieval/renaissance lacing was either spiral or ladder lacing, not the tennis shoe lacing shown.
I really love the „costumes“/dresses in Reign though. I don’t know why but the historical inaccuracy doesn’t bother me there. They certainly didn’t try, so I’m just enjoying the various interesting modern designs in the show. What bothers me is historical inaccuracy when it’s simply unnecessary or based on poor research when the overall show is supposed to be historical accurate.

I’m not sure what you mean by Outlander being known for exquisite costumes. Among costume historians, it is well known for having huge costume mistakes. The knitted garments are particularly egregious. Knitted shawls simply didn’t exist in the 18th c. Nor did cables or chunky knits.

The fact in Outlander not Claire or any other characters in the 1740's France was wearing a Robe a la Francaise it's the actual error. We never saw an Outlander lady wearing the Watteau Pliegues of the Robe a la Francaise, wich is very sad. The only example in the series is an emerald gown that isnta Robe a la Francaise, actually it's a Robe a la Piemontaise

They don’t actually care, they just want to pump out as much crap content as possible, as fast as possible, w the least amount of work possible, so they can make the most money as possible! That’s why the majority of their lists are based on opinions or are subjective! Them praising costuming in the new Little Women just shows their ass and that they don’t actually know what they’re talking about or do any research at all!!

Jacqueline Durran have done complete and extensive research on the costumes for 2019's Little Women. The praise for the costumes of that movie was warranted, legitimate and earned.
