  • This cartoon, produced in 1953 by UPA for the Kagran Corporation, featured Howdy Doody. It was directed by Gene Deitch and was his first directorial effort at UPA. Thought for years to be lost, a print was discovered in the Library of Congress in December, 2009.

    Nice that it was, rather a shame Bob hated it from what I read.

      In any case. it was never released theatrically, or shown on television.

      He understood children. This has more in common with “Le ballon rouge” (which I saw at the time, and, though I did not hate, I perceived as “the sort of thing grown-ups like”) than with “Howdy Doody”. And for all the awards UPA may have won, the animation comes off as cheap, rather than “minimalist”.
