  • Last fall I had the chance to frame a cove ceiling. I don’t get to do this often, so I recorded the process. In this series of videos I’ll show how I layout & cut the radius on the rafters, layout & build the trammel arm, set up the jig, and then layout the elliptical inside corner curves without a trammel.

Love the arches and traditional craft. For the poor folks like me without a calculator, you can get your radius with ((rise)^2)+(width/2)^2)) / (2*height) = arch radius. Current roof had be begging for an elipse but ended up with a 264'3" radius to strike the arch on a couple set of common rafters. Squaring back is good but if you need to strike arches large enough for a roof use a calculator or do the math, either method is less than a minute to get 😊

I framed in Florida in the 90s. One of the popular design features was arches. Arched windows and arched openings. I learned at a young age how to draw out any size and any size radius arch with n easy technique. By marking the 2 side arch ends and the center of arch point, all you need to do is triangulation straight down from center and square off the center of the side and center points. Where the 2 lines intersect is your pivot point for that arch.

weren't those the days? Arches here were a big thing in the early 2000's. Your method is a good one, easy.

It is a very strong saw for sure. I put a ripping guide on it and that's mostly what we use that saw for.

I realize you do this to justify talking to yourself on the job site. It's genius actually

      Amazon. My favorite www.calculated.com/prd102/Construction-Master-Pro-Trig-4080-Construction-Calculator.html
I can see it better than my phone, but BuildCalc is a great app too

It’s also available as an App on most smart phones. I have it on my iPhone. Works great! Though if your worried about damaging your phone, the style Tim has is a great choice!
