Hey Everyone,
In today's video, we're going to show a real-world example of how much power water-methanol injection and a custom tune can add, over an OTS map. Please note, for this test, the F80 M3 is running the original Pure Stage 2 turbos, not the new Stage 2+. Additionally, the car was running the Bootmod3 Stage 2H map to start.
After seeing the difference on the dyno, we can see that going from an OTS 2H map to a custom Paul Johnson tune with Water-Methanol Injection had HUGE results!

Can the transmission really take that much torque? And for how long?
It was tuned. Methanol increases octane. Octane is the resistance to detonation. It's all in the tune , not the methyl.
I still remember watching your old video on changing oil in an F30 🙂 you've come a long way and killin it bud!

it's amazing what timing can do to an engine. I was able to put down 860whp in my F150. 93 and 100 methanol. ( twin M15 nozzles)

I would have liked to see you do a dyno with just the boost juice added without the tune to see what, if any gains from boost juice alone.
Same, this isn't really apples to apples, but I'm also not really sure that's even possible. But people make huge gains just going custom from OTS.
Without a tune you won't see any gains in terms of power because the ECU will vary the boost pressure to target the same load/torque, so lower amount of boost is needed to make the same power because of the denser air.
@@MihaiRece I disagree , I ran ots mhd stage 2 + tune on my FBO n55 435i 93 oct then added AEM kit and then adding boost juice and changing from 93oct to 95 oct for a little more timing adjustment and that car probably gained 30whp . Even wedge tuning told me after seeing my logs that my setup wouldn’t gain more than 20whp on a custom tune . That car is dialed in perfectly that way
without a tune, it will cool your charge but it displaces air and will likely decrease power by itself
@@MBTVTIME you still tweaked the tune 95 oct vs 93 oct big difference also more timing so as Mihai said without a tune just water meth alone will do nothing power wise
This is like HGTV of tuning. Where are the air fuel ratios??? And is that tune static if so you’ll have to make sure you have the meth blend at all times
Be good to know what the boost & timing was doing, not sure whether those turbos are close to max but the custom tune first & then the wmi would've been good

Water-methanol injection mostly adds steam pressure (water) and a small amount of fuel (methanol) all the while allowing more boost on regular gas as the steam cools EGTs and prevents knocking.
This really makes me wonder if we should do something like this.... we are following this M3 closely.
How much more boost were you able to run? That's the big question. Video kind of gives the impression that a meth kit will net huge gains. But if your turbo is already almost maxed you will only see smaller gains from being able to run a little more timing and the cooling effect.
They really should include the logs lol

I know this is 10 months ago. But there is an off setting. No need to change your initial spray setting. Also, so the car is tuned for water/meth vs just for cooling?

I'm on a full bolts on MHD stage 2 plus, xHP stage 3 on a 2015 335i. About to pull a trigger on a meth kit (via my VRSF charge pipe connection) and am wondering about the right tuner for my MHD platform. Are you guys recommending any specific people? Anyone I should keep away from? Thanks.

My 2015 f80 M3 mineral Gray sakhir orange interior completely stock accept A P front mount intake with VF engineering hex tune stage 1 put down 509 whp & 550 wtq.

Should really have done OTS map vs Custom map then Custom vs Custom and Meth. In theory the meth could be doing nothing and its all in the custom tune (I doubt it is) but you can't be certain when changing multiple things at once.
I agree, I would have also liked to see a run of just the meth without any change in tuning.
Methanol/water without a tune reduces power as it delays initial flame development and flame front speed. It needs additional ignition advance before any gains are attainable.

I’ve seen 600hp on e85 no meth on stock turbos. Just intakes, heat exchanger and down pipes, and inlet pipes. Shouldn’t this make more power with upgraded turbos?
e85 is basically 85% ethanol which alone gives you loads of cooling. adding wmi to an e85 vehicle doesn´t give you as many gains as on pump gas

what happens if it runs dry in the middle of a push ? If you've run empty and can't get a bottle to refill for some stupid reason, I assume you have to remember to keep the car out of the range that's tuned for the methanol?
yeah, youre totally right. the same with having to deal with lower quality fuel, you have to be timid about it
The W/M injection system they are using is switchable. Meaning you can turn it on and off. Also most tuning devices allow for multiple tunes to be saved so you can have one with and one without
Hopefully the tune is programmed to lower the power when knock happens, it depends on how good the tuner and ECU is.
My non BMW car fills in more fuel in multiple steps to cool the engine.
If that does not help the ignition is adjusted in multiple steps.
If that also fails the boost is lowered in multiple steps.
This was possible on a stock ECU 25 years ago, so if the tuner does not take advantage of those settings it is pure laziness or recklessness.

I’m sure you made that on stock turbos and you can even push them a little more, but at what PSI? The HF can do it in a much more efficient manner.
I made 502hp 602tq to the ground on mike Botti base flex fuel map on stock turbo.. no pure or meth. Just tune MST intake down pipe flex fuel kit and E-50

I HAVE A 2018 M2 WITH A METHANOL SYSTEM, WHICH YOU RECOMMEND VP M5 M1 OR THE ONE YOU SHOW IN THE VIDEO.
M1 is pure methanal, M5 has lubricant added. Run M1.
Ok how much boost and timing was added with meth system
The peak power and torque isn't important., but the shape of the curves are. They should be as smooth as possible and the useable power and torque range should be as broad as possible. Sometimes it's adviseable to reduce peak horse power or torque to achieve that.
Not to be that guy, but im patiently waiting for the video when you put the F30 on the dyno... as is.
So if you're tuning without a dyno I guess you'd be using something like Dragy with Pro tool or INPA etc. But wouldn't you need to bring the car to full chuff (RPM) in 4th gear? (So you'd get a 1 to 1 gear ratio). Or is it not like that when doing it on a road. In Mexico. Etc? LOL. You'd be doing like 150 mph or more.

Let me start by saying that I love your channel and enjoy everything you do on your cars. I think it's safe to say you convinced me into getting a 2016 428i grand coupe for myself, never thought I would and I totally love it.
Now, I've got a couple upgrades, mostly esthetics and been able to install everything myself following your instructions, but when I got the led radio trim and went to install it I realized I couldn't because my car ,apparently, is not wired to support this upgrade. I doesn't even have the ashtray light, not that is not working, It doesn't have it, not the light nor the cables... nada.
Have you encounter something like this before, what should I do?.
