I would love to have been able to see Jonas Kaufmann in Massenet's Manon, especially if this is anything to go by. He was, and is, the most fantastic performer. Natalie Dessay sounds beautiful. Bravo to both of them I'd say.
I remember reading in 2008, all the critics were very excited by the appearance of Jonas Kaufmann on the Chicago stage. Natalie was already very well known, but JK was just being discovered in America - we were all excited!! Oh, what a singer, and beautiful, too!!!
no matter what, I cannot stand Dessay...I have tried to listen many arias performed by her and I simply can't, and believe me I always try not to comment a YT video if don't like it, but I just felt the need this time....And as always, Jonas sounds amazing!! I LOVE him :)
DessayBestSingerII Actually, I think she has a beautiful voice, but I just don't like her technique or the way she sings...she's just not my cup of tea, but I must say that I do love her as Queen of the Night ... oh, and thanks for respecting my opinion ;) (btw, I meant I cannot stand her voice, I never meant that I can't stand her as a person)
Daniliz81 Hm that's odd! people tend to usually not be fond of her voice instead! Well for my part I am extremely fond of her technique! (Not that this is a surprise to you, you've seen my username! :P which is by the way an exaggeration, I don't really think she's the best singer!) But that is not only because I really like her, but because it is so good and precise, her coloraturas are marvellous (I'm a sucker for people that can do that, like Joyce DiDonato and Juan Diego Flórez!), and this is all the more impressive when you know that Natalie is a very slow learner, and imagine the amount of work she put into developing that technique! Sorry, getting a bit carried away :-P !
Kaufmann is stupendous! I wish Dessay the very best, but worry about her taking on heavier repertory, such as Manon, Juliette and Violetta- so many coloratura sopranos curtailed their careers doing similar. Lily Pons never sang anything outside of her repertory and could sing beautifully at age 74 (it is on RUclips). Dessay is a fine actress with her voice, to be sure.
I wish that Lyric Opera had recorded a video of this performance. It is marvelous. Unfortunately, Dessay had a very short prime (either a faulty technique or singing roles too big for her voice). Kaufmann is still going strong - I last saw him on the stage in Naples 2023, in Die Walkure.

Dessay's voice is always so expressive! Kaufmann's voice here is also brilliant, rich, beautiful.
Than you for posting.
Wonderful acting (in singing) by them both.
Merci beaucoup, très beau..
God! How does she do it. She seems to be getting better and better.

I'm sorry to hear that, but hey! It's your opinion :) Here's hoping that one day you might realise that you can actually stand her!

and truth be told, this did end up harming her career

Does anybody know where can I get the cd or DVD with this recording?
Yes any dvd ???
@LamberWBY it's true that Dessay is not King Kong xD
I am not convinced by Dessay's prayer. Too bad
DELICIOSO DUO
I love both of them. But their voice don’t match in my opinion.
They don't
Love her in this. But Beverly Sills will always be my favourite. Hate the tenor
