When my son started pitching in youth baseball I used to turn on TBS when Maddux was pitching, sit my son down, and tell him "imitate this guy!" As an owner or Manager I would much rather have a "command" pitcher like Maddux than a guy that throws fire. Maddux would and could go deep into the game while really frustrating the batters. He also allows the defense to field their positions which is a good thing to keep them in the game and get outs. Many times Maddux would throw ONE PITCH and it would be a soft grounder or DP. Tough to get a man in scoring position with 1 or 0 outs.

    As a lifelong Met fan, since 1969, I hated that guy but deep down I loved him and enjoyed watching him work. He was a craftsman when he worked, it wasn’t “pitching” if you know what I mean. I didn’t know about the shenanigans side of him, that’s great.

  • @BrickByBrickBooking
    @BrickByBrickBooking 2 года назад +23

    My father and I used to go to Florida to catch a week's worth of spring training games. We went to see the Rays and it was great. I met Wade Boggs, super nice guy. He actually shot my friend Bryan in the chest once but that's a different story. Anyway, after the game, fan's would stand outside the front gate hoping to catch an autograph. I got a few, but when Canseco came out, I didn't even bother. But the horrible part was he would take a pen and an item from a fan, sign it, and drop on the ground. He did this over and over while walking to the parking lot. The rule was, once he's on the blacktop of the parking lot, you can't follow him anymore. So this little kid finally got his pen and item into Canseco's hand and just as he's about to sign it, his foot hits the blacktop and he just dropped the pen and item without signing. The kid immediately burst into tears. Because of that (amongst other reasons) I've never hated a player of any sport more in my life than him. What a guy!

    What was the point of this emphasis on hitting the next batter, it's not like they were getting killed in the game

      It was retribution for previous hit batters. The Braves thought the Devil Rays pitchers were throwing at their hitters.

    If Greg Maddux did not know you well, did not care about you or if you were a fan and you asked Greg how he was doing he ALWAYS had the same one word response "super". That's all hed say.

    Jose Canseco came up through the Huntsville Stars affiliate of the Oakland A's and he had a twin brother named Ozzie that played at Huntsville as well. I could never understand why one identical twin could be so successful and the other be barely good enough to be there. There DNA is the same, no?

      Work ethic. Everyone will say the juice, but you don't magically start growing muscle without first putting in the work to get huge like Canseco, that takes tremendous work ethic.

    Maddux consistently got a strike call on pitches that were outside.

    • @LukenUSee
      @LukenUSee 2 года назад

      That's called umpire respect. I heard somewhere he would go just a bit outside, and if he got the call, then move it an inch or so further out and see, then further, and so on, to find out how much the ump was willing to give him. His control was so fine he could do that and have umps calling them a few inches off all night
