There are so many channels that only provide guidance on how to strike the ball. The strategic guidance in this video is much more helpful by providing practical advice on how to manage each hole - establishing reasonable expectations, eliminating the constant disappointment that invariably affects the next shot. Looking forward to a big improvement - Many thanks.
Glad you liked the video, the majority of my latest videos I’ve posted go more into detail about what is truly required to play to a certain level, please enjoy them
Finally, a good example of how to think your way around a hole. Started golf later in life, I’m 71 now and this is exactly what I need to see. Thank you!
I need to watch this all day. I’m good at making my bogey on the first hole but then I start thinking about turning pro next season and it immediately turns to sh**. This isn’t a game at all…it’s a mental illness.
Hi David, new to the channel and loving this instruction. 64 years old, got down to 14 years ago. Now floating around 17/18. I feel I still have the shots, although not the distance. This is helping me to manage expectations and play a calmer and more relaxed form of golf, which is leading to more consistant scoring. Thanks again.
You are exactly right about this game of “bogey” golf. My one thing to add is pick the appropriate tees to play. Leave your pride in the trunk of your car. If playing partners want to say something about it, let them pay your fees and then play their tees. It’s really that easy.
I was VERY skeptical about this approach. I gave it a try and while I did not break 90, I had the best round in years, only spoiled by a few bad shots. Looking forward to my next round.
"Standard pitching wedges now on average have about 44 degrees of loft. So when I was growing up that was more what an 8 iron was. So that's why people look like they're starting to hit the ball further." LOVE IT. Someone who's willing to just casually call a spade a spade! Shrinking loft disease has been going on for ages now, and it doesn't do anyone any favours. That leaves you 8 degrees of loft between that and your 52 degree wedge. When David and I were growing up, a 52 degree wedge WAS a pitching wedge. But as lofts shrank, they had to invent a new wedge to fill that growing gap between a pitching wedge and a sand wedge. Some manufacturers even called it a Gap Wedge. Now, with some sets, they stretch the loft gaps to 6 degrees between 9 and PW and GW in order to avoid having to create a 5th wedge, and drop yet another fairway wood. And don't get me started about turning 3 irons into 5 irons, and creating hybrids to compensate for making long irons unhittable. Lord, what a bunch of nonsense!
@@custer8616 Varies. Depends on distance from the flag and the edge of the green, amount of green between landing point and flag, speed of green, etc. Also, I'm just coming back to golf after 13 years off, so I'm in the process of rediscovering what kind of touch and roll I get with each club at the courses i am now playing. Add in that I've been sidelined for the last month with an elbow injury, and likely won't play again until close to Labour Day and, well............. PS, a set like that would drive me crazy. I want the distance gaps between my clubs at full swing to be the same or narrower at the shorter end, not wider. But a 6 degree gap probably means a 15 yard plus distance gap. I'd want a 2nd gap wedge!
@@seanbaines the iron gaps are 4 degrees, I bought the gap wedge separately. Before, I was using a chipper for 30 yards and in and pw for everything else
@@custer8616 The problem is the irons, which are too strong to allow an easy 1 club progression to the sand wedge at 56 degrees. You have to either spread out the wedges too much, IMO, or drop a long club in order to add an extra wedge. From a 43 degree pitching wedge, you then need 2 wedges in that gap, 1 at 47, and 1 at 51. So you'd have to drop a wood or a hybrid, and you are back to where you were 10-20 years ago, just with different numbers or names on the bottom of the club. None of this is your fault. You bought what was available to be bought. Why manufacturers keep running this conveyor belt, strengthening and lengthening clubs, dropping low numbers off one end and adding wedges at the other, I don't know. At this rate someday we'll have a pitching wedge, gap wedge, approach wedge, greenside wedge, fat wedge, low sandie wedge, sand wedge, lob wedge, and flop wedge. But it'll still be 10 steel headed iron-like clubs from 24 to 60 degrees. 😁
Most golfers would benefit with more precision at the low end of the bag, that’s the scoring end and they probably use wedges nearly every hole not the their 4 iron or 5 wood
A brilliant video, the key is to harness your capabilities, we overcomplicate the game but you just showed there that our 15th club the head on your shoulders is our best tool when playing golf.
Bogey golf is pretty decent in the grand scheme of things. I aim to have a putt for par, even if its 20 or 30 ft. As long as your pace control is ok you should get plenty of easy bogeys. Then its a case of hitting more better shots than bad ones on and around the green.
I’m a 20 handicapper. I play with players of 9 or 10 handicap. The only differences I between us is they hit it further but much more importantly, they never hit it fat or thin or duff a chip. I can be brilliant and useless all in the space of 10 minutes.
Biggest difference between higher handicappers and lower handicappers is the mind set. The higher the handicap the bigger they fear they will do it wrong. It sounds like you can hit the shot, next time you play focus clearly on what you want.
@@andrewgrimshaw5180I’m a 17. I hit the ball a long way - no issue. It’s just the frequency of “bad” shots. The miss in the sand, the shank OB that came out of nowhere, the skulled pitch across the green and into the woods. The thinned tee shot on the one hole with the forced water carry………makes an 89 into a 94, and an 84 and 89. Almost every round, some version of this.
18 handicappers hit fat thin skull n flub shots. Whats not being said here is howto avoid th bad shots. U must PURE ur Ball Striking to CENTER of Clubhead hits. Good video on how to drop the ego too and play with in your true means. Only issue I see is that a lot of golfers even those who score around 90-95 will chunk a number of shots and get in real trouble or the lie is in deep rough or any other real nasty situation that makes them frustrated if that happens a number of times. Now their trying to do those small % shots. But your advice is what most should do if they can drop the eog. I know golfer who think "If I can only find the right clubs that work for me and my swing" Instead of practicing a few times/wk to get better contact. A buddy of mine must have 50 clubs at home hoping some of them are the answer to his contact issues. 😃
Ur friend needs a clubfitting. Not all clubs fit all golfers im 6'3 so my clubs r 2" over standard length n because of my swing type n my height, require a 2◦ uprite bend.
David, wow I watch many many golf videos. This one truly stuck with me. I'm not a bogey golfer, more like 105 ish. I can hit the ball a ton, just never consistent (well except for bad). I seem behind scoring right off my tee shot. I plan on implementing this technique on my very first round of golf. I'm excited to give it a go. Thank you
Glad you liked the video, since this one I have posted a number of videos showing more areas where the data can help, please watch and enjoy and we'll get you shooting 90 in no time.
Here's the problem: you're hitting every shot how you want to. Anyone can make a bogey and an occassional par doing that - the issue with most 18 handicapers is they flub shots that cost them strokes at least every few holes. I'm a 12 and play with lots of 18s and if we didn't have bad shots/penalty shots we'd all be several strokes better.
Pretty easy for a 2 or 3 handicapper to club down to hit the ball like a 20 handicapper. But 18-20 'cappers don't hit 10 good shots in a row ( i can vouch for that..) One fat shot that goes 20 yds on the par five , plus one skulled chip and your bogey turns into snow-guy...
When you expect to bogey a hole, you will bogey a hole. Generally hit the club that will carry you to the back of the green. A miss hit will probably get you on the green. One thing that has really helped with chipping is to put most of my weight on the front foot. Stand close to the ball with the toe of the club on the ground. Start with the next to the most lofted club and chip 10 balls to an open spot on a flat green. My average was 14 yards. My G club was 19. My pitching wedge was 25. 9 iron 32. 8 about 39. All with the same swing. Up hill a little shorter, down hill longer. On a faster green, it may be 16 and 22, so I adjust. The point is if the pin is 15 yards, 54 degree club for me. My up and down has really improved with the “ same swing” you just have to trust it. Practice it and you instantly know distance.
That’s the first thing I noticed. Looks like it’s barely a half swing! The last bit of advice on reading the slope was super beneficial. I’ve improved tremendously over the last year in reading putts and it’s really helped drop my scores and become the best part of my game. This little nugget will no doubt help me get even better. Thanks.
Which is why this ia a terrible advice... a scratch golfer can easilly break 90 by only hitting short safe iron shots. A 18 hc'er is NOT able to do that consistantly over so many holes. How many times on average do you think the 18hc'er will duff the iron shot 20-50 yards over 18 holes... MANY... regardless if they play tactically or not. Add the average three puts, slicing it into the water, not getting out of bunker on first try, etc etc and it becomes an impossible task
@@iananthonyjames yeah but there is a middle ground. And the middle ground is not relying on every shot you take outside 100m have to be perfect. If you break hole 1 which is a par 4 hole into three 7iron shots and then you duff the first one fifty meters. 90 is now already off the table with this strategy..
@@trondgjertsen8765 I agree. But I thought there was some decent advice about playing the sensible shot once in trouble. As you say, these guys making it seem easy don't ever duff the ball ten yards into further trouble!
This style of play leaves no room for errors. My problem is fat/thins and shanks. So that adds a few more strokes and I end up shooting in The high 90s to low 100s. If you are a consistent ball striker this is a great way to play.

Yes, but we're also capable of parring six holes this way too. Still can break 90 with a couple of bad holes. He's teaching us to play with the shots we're confident we can play.
Top players have caddies. Every shot lie or green read gets advice. Average mugs get nil. Get playing mate to be your caddy on a social game. Can help a lot. Public courses often have misaligned tee boxes here in Oz. 2 eyes spotting just that a bonus.
The other way to give oneself more space with that chip on the 2nd hole is to aim just a smidge right, where there is a little more room behind in case the ball runs on a bit. Not much. Just a bit. I like your idea of only needing to get within a 15 foot radius. In this case, as you say, a little short and maybe a smidge right keeps all that radius on the green.
All these suggestions are absolutely correct, but depend on the ability to hit the shots, and do not help those of us who just can't, due to yips or whatever else. A good example is the little pitch on the 3rd hole; about a 1 in 20 shot for me, despite any number of perfect practice swings.
Yes a hybrid is another option, the idea is to give you options of the correct shot for you. Never at any point do you want to think of thinning the shot, if you do this is what the outcome will probably be.

Playing calm is half the battle - take an 80+% decent hit rate at the range and watch it disintegrate on the course as you get in a pickle with self imposed pressures. Play calm, make every shot like a range shot and the sensible options become more applicable.
I don’t know any fellow golfer who doesn’t want to hit the ball +350 yards off the tee & 150 yards with a 9 iron then single putt on every hole & they don’t really ever think about what handicap they are playing off but I have seen the odd player or two who will miss a putt on purpose in order to protect their handicap for the weekend medal comp!
I agree with wanting to hit the ball a long way, but if we’re honest we all need to realise our ability and get our expectations in line with that ability. When a golfer does this then their game can become much more consistent.
Perfect, control yourself and you’ll see the results. Watch my 2 videos ‘Stop Playing Senseless Golf’ and ‘Turn at Each Hole ‘ to keep your mind in the right place
Love the series but most 18 hcap like myself are often trying to par the hole not play for safe bogey and will string 2, 3 4 or 5 good shots before a bad one arrives to undo the good work.
Most 18 handicappers are trying to BIRDIE the hole on the tee, save par after their tee shot, save bogie after their over ambitious rescue second shot, and failing to chip in for a double…. Think the point of the video is (1) play the tee shot that gives the highest percentage of still being in with the chance of bogie. Do the same on shot 2. You’ll be surprised how many times, you then get up and down/two putt for par! Few 18 hdcps will driver 250, wedge with spin to a green, miss the putt by sn inch and tap in for par
The data I have developed shows you what you need to achieve to play to a certain level, this video is to shoot 90. I play off about 45 but I expect to get a 3 or a 4 on EVERY par 3 without using a driver on ANY Ian 91 years old can’t drive much over 150 yards even on a good dry day. Off 18 I would expect to be playing for a 2 or 3 on EVERY PAR 3 x
You played three relatively straight holes. On my home course there are a few holes that really eat me up! One is a double dog leg. Tee shot: trouble left and right but you need some distance to get in good position for second shot. Also, if you hit it better than average, you have a downhill sidehill lie for second. Second shot you need some distance also if you want to have a chance to clear the creek in front of the green. Sometimes you have to lay up if you have anything much more than 150 yards. Trouble left, right, and short. The easy-peasy style you're showing may not get you where you need to be. Par 5. My typical score is 7-8. Sometimes worse. Hardly a level lie for the entirety of the hole. So, although I like your approach, it won't work for every hole.
The 3 holes have their different challenges, which the camera may not show. The Par 5 is a double dogleg, first it gradually moves right to left, and then a right angle dogleg to the right. The second shot is a downhill hanging lie with the ball above your feet. The Par 3 is a straight 200 yarder The Par 4 has a 5-6 degree slope from left to right, which is why the ball rolled into the edge of the trees. The great thing with golf is every hole has its own challenges, which is why I love this game.
@@TheResourcefulCoach I guess the camera makes it look a lot tamer than it is. I have noticed this phenomenon in my ski photos. Sorry, I jumped to a wrong conclusion, there.
I don’t know any club golfer that from the middle of the fairway on a par 5 would hit a 6 iron to lay up. These days players are hitting their rescue clubs and going 40-60 yards further than their 6 iron.
The idea behind the 12 Shots of Golf is to show you on average how far you need to hit each shot when playing down a hole. If you can advance it 150 yards, this will keep you playing to 18. If you have the ability to hit it further then you have the opportunity to play to a lower handicap. The 12 Shots of Golf will help you understand what’s required to play to a certain level, and I’ve found it takes pressure off the player, making them play better.
I would, for exactly the reason in the video. My club has a “card wrecker” par-5 8th hole. Driver off the tee risks OB on the right, trees on the left…but it’s 100 yards wide at 150-170 yards from tee. Second shot, there’s a “magnetic” pond at about 100 yards in front of the green, but the fairway if you stay 130 from the green is about 150 yards wide! Driver-low iron is high risk and leaves a 60-yard pitch. Six-iron, 8-iron leaves PW to the green with no hazards in play. I’m 16 handicap and can genuinely drive 250 carry, but ANY slice or pull means I have to come out sideways…I’ve learned to hit irons off the tee. Nice side effect….I now hit a four iron off the tee further than many pals hit a 3-wood
Good advice, but these are relatively flat greens, no sand traps. Most of the newer courses seem to build greens with a lot of break and at least 2 traps per hold. Pick a harder course and try again.
Unfortunately the camera angles don’t show the difficulty of the course, the course has a rating of 125. We have water hazards on a couple of holes which are used on some of my other videos.
Unfortunately the club where I (an 18-handicap golfer, as it happens) play has a lot more in the way of penalty areas and other hazards than the course in the video. Ponds, ditches, sloping greens, long rough, bunkers - just about every hole threatens a potential score of 3 or 4 over par. If I am in a stroke play competition, scoring under 90 is for me a rarity.
The course has a couple of water hazards on other holes, which are in my other videos. The course is a tight tree lined course with very sloping fairways, which is why my ball on the 3rd hole ended up in the edge of the trees. It’s a shame the camera doesn’t show this. Give my ideas a go and there’s a good chance you’ll break 90
Unfortunately the holes I chose don’t have the water hazards, we have 2 on the 3rd and 6th, and the bunkers on the par 3 didn’t come into play. Please watch my latest video On Course Golf Lesson. How I react to each shot. This will show what to do when there are hazards to deal with
Some very good advice but high handicappers don’t hit the ball straight off the Tee! Probably only 50% of the time. Most high handicappers cannot hit a 6 iron, should use a 5 rescue and chipping is hit and miss!
The video is data driven to show you what needs to be achieved to shoot 90. The choice of club is down to you, as long as you get the results you want. Please watch my other 12 Shots of Golf videos, breaking down the 12 shots, so you know what’s needed to play to this level.

would have been better if David had taken out a real 18 handicapper and instructed him how to play, not all 18s would have hit the dancefloor with those chips
You are not realistic at all. 18 markers duff plenty of shots , lose balls, take 3 to get out of bunkers , have doubles and triples. You hit perfect shots for what you were trying to do, no 18 marker ever does that.
Actually, that's pretty much how I used to break 90. I thought the video was pretty fair representation of how to go about planning your play. Yes, there will be some problems and duffed shots you'll have to work around. But my experience tells me that the number of such shots goes way down if you start hitting lower pressure, easier shots. The tops and fats and duffs mostly come when you are trying to really hit one, I find. When I took off the pressure, I hit straighter and hit into way less trouble, too. I'd get only a 1-2 doubles per round, but make up for that with 3-4-5 pars and shoot 87-89. On the days I duffed more and had a triple or two, I'd be up around 92 or so. Some days, things would really work out, and I'd scare 80. It works. The ones I see going OB, and losing balls, and taking 3 to get out of bunkers aren't 18 handicappers. They are players that can't break 100. Or at least that's been my experience.
@@pepawg2281 I wasn’t referring those things happening every round but an 18 handicapper does all of those things . I’ve played with plenty of 18 handicappers, they are the mistakes they make…off 18 you are really inconsistent
180 with the driver , yes...but 150 with a six? not a chance or 130 with an 8? not a chance either.
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾. Thank you for this common sense approach to course management.
You're so welcome! Thanks for watching!
A brilliant video, the key is to harness your capabilities, we overcomplicate the game but you just showed there that our 15th club the head on your shoulders is our best tool when playing golf.
Your mind is the starting point, clarity and attitude towards each shot will make a massive difference.
Indeed very calm... avoids getting into uncalled for trouble. Thanks for your tips.
Bogey golf is pretty decent in the grand scheme of things. I aim to have a putt for par, even if its 20 or 30 ft. As long as your pace control is ok you should get plenty of easy bogeys. Then its a case of hitting more better shots than bad ones on and around the green.
Excellent, great logic, very listenable and enjoyable...thanks. I'm higher than 18 but this gives me hope.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Please watch my 12 Shots of Golf videos which break down the shots, this will show you what to do in each area.
What a great video. I’m 71 years old and that’s how I try to play. If you know your limitations, you can have a decent score.
Loved how relaxed you are when hitting the ball. No smashing it. Make mid length club choices. I'll try this more! Many thanks!
Thank you, was brought up in the Faldo era, all about accuracy and short game, slightly different to the modern professional golfer
@@TheResourcefulCoach not true for me. No difference in my mindset compared to me playing partner.

A twofer, course management lesson, and how to play as an 18 handicap golfer. Excellent video. Oh, and I liked how you read the greens.
Please watch my video on green reading ‘Guaranteed No More 3 Putts’ to go through my green reading method

Totally agree. A bogey golfer has to be able to hit 2-3 decent shots IN A Row.
Of course it helps if you’re playing a course with what looks like 150 yard wide totally flat fairway with no bunkers on it or few around the green.
Pretty easy for a 2 or 3 handicapper to club down to hit the ball like a 20 handicapper. But 18-20 'cappers don't hit 10 good shots in a row ( i can vouch for that..)
One fat shot that goes 20 yds on the par five , plus one skulled chip and your bogey turns into snow-guy...
100% agree. It is the duffs that occur throughout the round that cause me to hit in the 90’s
Great advice. I am amazed at how relaxed and seemingly slow your swing is to easily achieve 180+ off the tee.
@@trondgjertsen8765Bit harsh. It does seem to be over-ambitious shots which kill the amateur.
Hit the ball straight at a reliable distance with every club you choose to employ. Wow, super
This style of play leaves no room for errors. My problem is fat/thins and shanks. So that adds a few more strokes and I end up shooting in The high 90s to low 100s. If you are a consistent ball striker this is a great way to play.
Watch my video ‘Improve Your Ball Striking - Practice off a Downhill Lie’ , this will help to reduce your fat and thin shots.
So true, one duff in their and its a double or triple bogey

Top players have caddies. Every shot lie or green read gets advice. Average mugs get nil. Get playing mate to be your caddy on a social game. Can help a lot. Public courses often have misaligned tee boxes here in Oz. 2 eyes spotting just that a bonus.
Become your own caddy by making notes on previous rounds, use these to help give you information on the round you are playing.
Was that a hybrid you teed off with on the first two holes?
Yes, a 4 hybrid
playing boogie golf runs in increased risk for double B ? . I will trying it. Laying up a bit more with straighter shots.
A great representation of a bogey golfer. Manage long game mistakes and have a very good short game to clean up everything around the green.
All these suggestions are absolutely correct, but depend on the ability to hit the shots, and do not help those of us who just can't, due to yips or whatever else. A good example is the little pitch on the 3rd hole; about a 1 in 20 shot for me, despite any number of perfect practice swings.
Please watch my ‘Carpool Golf’ and ‘First Tee Nerves’ videos to help improve your mind, reducing the yips etc

9:00 why did you not recommend a hybrid or 5wood chip for that shot, so much easier to control than a thinned P or 8 iron.

Keep calm and have clarity of the shot you’re about to take
I don’t know any fellow golfer who doesn’t want to hit the ball +350 yards off the tee & 150 yards with a 9 iron then single putt on every hole & they don’t really ever think about what handicap they are playing off but I have seen the odd player or two who will miss a putt on purpose in order to protect their handicap for the weekend medal comp!
I agree with wanting to hit the ball a long way, but if we’re honest we all need to realise our ability and get our expectations in line with that ability. When a golfer does this then their game can become much more consistent.
Good reminder to play the course rather than let it play me.
Perfect, control yourself and you’ll see the results. Watch my 2 videos ‘Stop Playing Senseless Golf’ and ‘Turn at Each Hole ‘ to keep your mind in the right place

That’s the idea of the 12 Shots of Golf, understand what’s really required to play to that handicap. Thank you for understanding
The Par 3 is a straight 200 yarder
The Par 4 has a 5-6 degree slope from left to right, which is why the ball rolled into the edge of the trees.
Avoid hero shots! Rarely work😫
Exactly, my success rate for hero shots is very low, so I don’t do it
Without a shot tracker, hitting into the wilderness means absolutely nothing nowadays, subscribers want to see where the ball has gone.
Something I am adding to future videos
If i could just learn how to hit that far so easily. Cant find that timing
Great video but I didn't see a single sand trap or water hazard. I'm 78 years old. I might be able to shoot 90 on that course if Im having a good day.
Unfortunately the holes I chose don’t have the water hazards, we have 2 on the 3rd and 6th, and the bunkers on the par 3 didn’t come into play.
Please watch my latest video

Some very good advice but high handicappers don’t hit the ball straight off the Tee! Probably only 50% of the time. Most high handicappers cannot hit a 6 iron, should use a 5 rescue and chipping is hit and miss!

Sorry, should have said 514 yard par 5, and the second shot was downhill, down wind, so got a bit more distance than expected
If you're taking 3 to get out of bunkers, carding doubles and triples, and losing balls, you're nowhere near an 18. Better rethink that handicap!
@@pepawg2281 I wasn’t referring those things happening every round but an 18 handicapper does all of those things . I’ve played with plenty of 18 handicappers, they are the mistakes they make…off 18 you are really inconsistent
Now dribble 2 or 3 50 yards down the fairway.
Watch my Part 3, How to break 90, and you'll see me do this
To break 90, just play bogey golf , keep it simple
Exactly, work out your way of achieving bogey golf
180 with the driver , yes...but 150 with a six? not a chance or 130 with an 8? not a chance either. You are way off with those distances, I'm afraid for a 71 year old plus there is no mention of the duff shots, most of us do a fair few of those per round! Having said that, the concept of staying within your capabilities is sound. Mni tnx.
Doesn’t matter what club you use, be confident in the club you know you can hit 150 or 130 yards
U guys r rite 18 handicappers hit fat thin skull n flub shots. Whats not being said here is howto avoid th bad shots. U must PURE
ur Ball Striking to CENTER of Clubhead hits. To do this, hit 300 balls from hip hi 2 hip hi, with toe of club pointing up in hip hi backswing n in hip hi follow thru.
Distance is not important ONLY CENTER Contact.
This will lock in pure ball striking into ur Muscle Memory. U can hit 30 w this drill 10 days or 100 balls over 3 days. Doesnt matter. Also all that matters is center of clubface ball contact. That is th fith line up on th clubface.
@@mikehogi The idea of the video is data based to show you what do do, please watch my other videos to explain technique

Thank you for watching!
