Wenwu was such a great "villain". Although he really didn't feel like a villain to me. Everything he did was for love and ended up sacrificing himself for his son. Tony Leung played him so well, he is a legend! I also love the fact that as they say in the movie Shang Chi was the product of both his parents and they tell it in the fight scenes which I absolutely love. The way he defeated his dad using his mothers softer fighting style but also ended up beating the giant monster with his fathers more stronger moves. It's really great visual storytelling.

There are tons of legendary Hong Kong actors in this, including Tony Leung. I think for me, the heart and most compelling part of the movie is the tragedy of Wen Wu. This felt like his story. You can see in his eyes his sorrow, like when he hears that "We needed you, and you chose those damn rings" and his tears and shaking his head when Shang said "I wish that were true". The dragon and soul sucker I could care less about. To me this was the story of a Father who wanted to be strong and love his family and did it in all the wrong ways. It was so human. The irrationality, lashing out blaming his son for his wife's death (even though I'm sure he didn't really feel that way all this time, would know better) Shang Chi blaming his dad, saying he's going to kill him, another irrational but very human reaction. My eyes sweat seeing him flash back to his son through the ages before he died.

As a little girl growing up in Korea, I always loved martial arts movies, but, as a child, I associated them as either the real action violent martial arts movies and, what I called "magic" martial arts movies, where they showed the more supernatural aspects of the artform. I LOVED magic martial arts, the flying, the superhero-ish jumps and moves, the manipulation of chi on one's environment, the "powers". For me, Shang-Chi was taking all the beauty and wonder of magic martial arts, and placing it within the MCU universe. I LOVED this movie, and I feel it's one of the more interesting ones, like Guardians of the Galaxy, like Doctor Strange. LOVED it.
And Katie especially, made it feel SO relatable. I AM Katie - the girl who moved to the US, whose parents were constantly speaking our native language to me, so I fully understood it on hearing, but I failed at actually speaking my first language due to repetitive and regular use of just English, and wanting to fit in with my American friends. A little overweight, a little weird, not at all athletic and sporty and able to fight, a little bit Americanized and not quite fitting in EITHER culture, and struggling to maintain equilibrium within that. Parents wanting me to achieve the success they KNOW I am capable of, but feeling out of place within that Asian parent dream. I related HARD to the Katie character, and I loved that she was kept as a vital part of the story, and not just a forgettable secondary character.
I ALSO loved how well the ladies got along, Katie, their friend, his aunt, and his sister. I'm tired of the "women can't get along and constantly hate each other" trope in movies, so this was absolutely refreshing to see them all exhibit such camaraderie. Oh, and can I say, Michelle Yeoh is ABSOLUTELY gorgeous, at ANY age. And she still has moves - she can whip the ass of a person less than half her age. I can't get over the fact that she is damned near 60.

Something I love about this movie so much is that, unlike a lot of plots where there’s a sister and brother duo or really any sibling pairing who are at odds with each other, typically those characters are pitted against each other. But in this movie, they allow for a natural healing to occur between the siblings who also understand that there is a common enemy between them and that they benefit aiding each other even when they have their differences. It’s a breath of fresh air to see a strong sibling duo! Much like Wanda and Pietro.

Yes! Loved the black figures fighting in front of the pink billboard. Beautiful visual! The director talked about this scene. It has lots of CGI of course. Because the buildings were all glass so they had to make sure all the reflections on the glass and the helicopter were accurate. It's one challenging scene for them. But the bus scene tops it all. They spent a month shooting that bus scene.

About all the cars going through the “pocket”…I just want to clarify, there was no pocket at that time. It demonstrates earlier in the film with the dragon eye water scene that it shows him the way and when and what time the entire way opens up and stays open sooo that’s how they got all the cars through. There was no pocket. It’s fully open occasionally and he knew the day and time from their necklaces.

I love this movie so much. Oh and the reason his dad got his whole army though was because the day he came in he didn’t have to “stay in the pocket”. The water map showed the exact route in the maze to get into Talo. And it’s only open once a year. That’s why his dad took the pendants because he knew the day but he didn’t know the right path to take but then he knew both. Shang-Chi and the rest got though only because Moriss helped them stay in the pocket that you have to stay in the other days of the year. If you are not from Talo then you would never know how to find a way though. I also love the end battle! There is a quick cool detail at the end with Xialing and the dragon. They tag teamed with the rope to hold the soul sucker back so Shang could blow it up with the rings. That was so cool I have never seen something like that before!

Wenwu: Gives up all power for love & family, old enemies kill his wife while he’s not there, asks Shang-Chi if he can train him, trains Shang-Chi to essentially be mentally & physically tough & to be able protect his sister in case one’s not there for an attack, wants the family back together again, sad distressed mad and also proud that his son is able to beat him, remembers all the wholesome moments with his family (especially Shang-Chi) as he believes he’s ready.
Shang-Chi: Consents to be apart of the Ten Rings as a little kid, promises he’ll be back in 3 days but leaves Xialing & Wenwu hanging dry, doesn’t apologize to Xialing in Macau but she helps him anyways, blames Wenwu for his mom’s death even though he was buying them supplies & fails to realize he would’ve been in the 5 stages of grief, wants to kill his dad though he taught him everything, doesn’t look sad that his dad gave him the rings and dies in front of him.
