SFC Griffith was a 28 year old E7 when this was filmed. I was an E7 at 30. I am 53 now. SFC Griffith in this video seems older than me. I did 20 years in the army, all in combat arms, and deployed everywhere including afg and iraq. SFC Griffith seems harder and more experienced than I could have ever hoped to be. I hope he is still alive and enjoying old age.
I was thinking the same thing! I was a 27 yo E7 with 3 deployments in combat arms. I dont think I ever felt as hardcore as that man looked. Im close to shame when I think of our “deployments” compared to the Vietnam era combat troops.
I have never been in the military, but I always thought that combat soldiers, commandos, or any special forces soldiers probably have it easier in action these days, compared to men of older generations, simply because the equipment and technology used these days has made their lives easier. Even navigating through tough terrain is made easier these days with using GPS instead of a compass and a map. A soldiers skill set has changed over the last 75 years massively I'd imagine.

The difference is we train smarter now, with emphasis on conditioning ourselves better to improve performance and rapidly recover from injuries. I didn't know until years later that a good friend had gone to this school. No idea if we were even near each other in Vietnam. Hats off to these folks.
I was a Paratrooper/medic at Ft. Bragg in mid and late 90s. While on DRF-7 (support cycle) fir division, I had opportunity to be lead medic for division PRC (pre Ranger course), train up prior to Ranger school, those Paras slotted to attend Ranger, had to complete PRC, we were there as medics for support for 3 weeks, PRC patterned after Recondo. We met a CSM with a Recondo V patch, he wore on his right breast pocket. Hard looking dude. Nam vet, we were told
My Stepfather was the first Air Force PJ to ever attend the Recondo school. Their “graduation” patrol was compromised almost immediately after insertion and as Dad stated”We spent three days and nights being chased off the mountain and all the way to the coast” where they were picked up by friendly forces. More than one student and instructor were killed during the graduation patrols because it was a real insertion in “Indian territory” with the corresponding dangers. Graduates were issued modified double E bras to carry their balls in… 😊
FT. Carson Colorado I trained there many years ago Field Artillery U.S. Marines on a two-week training exercise joint training with the U.S. Army. Physical training, Hikes, pushups. Living in the field the entire time M.R.E.'s only. our rifles and our howitzers. it rained while we were there and we had a good experience. i'll always look back on those days and remember how good it felt to wear the Uniform and train for battle with those rare good men that volunteer to go serve this Nation.
This was the Recondo School down range at Fort Carson. It's in an area called Sullivan Park. I remember seeing the remains of their old rappel tower in 1990. The "RECONDO" tab was still visible. "Camp Red Devil"............had not heard that in 28 years!
I did some live fire training and patrols at FT. Carson Colorado back in 1997 there were green beret's doing infiltration training working in conjunction with our field battle tactics. I'm a U.S. Marine but several times I was able to work with the Army. FT. Carson was a good place to train. lot's of mosquito's though in the summer man oh man. but the fresh mountain air was nice and the training area were pretty good. the Air-force academy was cool also we got too see lot of stuff and got a day off to hit Denver. when I was in J.R.O.T.C. in high school, I learned Land NAV and Close order drill with Rifles and Uniform inspections every friday. we attended a week-long active duty Army leadership course at FORT ORD CA, in Monterey California we watched films just like this one which was ordered from our S.A.I. Sgt. Major Donald Bishop, he was a combat veteran of the Korean War and Vietnam he and MSgt. Herrera who was a L.R.R.P. in Vietnam taught us many many things related to Leadership, discipline, and Army ways of doing things. films like this was a big part of our training as cadet's we had several JROTC cadets who ended up Serving and joining all branches of the Military. a few were accepted into U.S. Military academies like Annapolis and Wentworth Military academy. I joined the Marines at age 17 after completing the ASVAB test and scored pretty good and ended up serving in Field Artillery also a Machine gunner and Color guard, I did many things in the Marines and deployed all over the place. the Army Signal Corps was where our Sgt. Major in high school learned some great Land Lav skills which he passed on to us. I served 21 Years in the Marines but I always show respect to the U.S. Army for the learning I received in JROTC I also say Semper Fidelis to Sgt. Major Don Bishop and MSgt. Herrera U.S. Army (ret)

Reminds me of Marine Corps Mountain Warfare School/Course. This would be the winter package. Marine Corps infantry must be successful in order to advance in the training in order to be deployable for overseas deployments.

These guys were lucky to be able to go to Recondo school stateside. Before that I believe it was an in country school. It's cool to see the 5ID training, they had 1 Brigade in Nam at the DMZ. They cleared route 9 for operation Lam Son. Other than that not much is written about them in Nam. I would like to know what kind of knife they received at graduation
I went through and graduated "RECONDO" in 1985 (18th Abn Corps, when going to 7th Inf Div LRSD) anf got to go again in early 1987, as one of the last classes when I was assd to 82nd Abn Div LRSD;313th MI) and really enjoyed both! It doesnt look like itm but it could be.....? I love this stuff.. one thing I noticed is that during the P.T. the instructors didn't participate in the p.t. I think that's a bad practice. If Ur in the mud with the troops they respect you if Ur willing to do push-ups with the men u lead then they will attack when u give the order...
While that's true, you gotta keep in mind some of these guys that got thrown into instruction during Vietnam and were really badly injured from their deployments, so it was the only way they could stay in. For Carlos Hathcock, for instance, he could barely walk and had so many bullet/shrapnel wounds that he could not pt with his students, but he was one of the deadliest snipers in US history.
I notice white tshirts and black leather boots that typically had 1930 style street soles. I went through this nonsense from 1963 through 1970 when I went to flight school. There, I was issued Korean War era equipment and leftover uniforms meant for armor personnel. Flying high performance fixed wing aircraft and finding our equipment inferior, most of us secured Air Force and navy flight suits, helmets, and oxygen masks. The army was more attuned to helicopter pilots smashing bugs at 100 knots or less.

Yes. The 25th infantry division(Tropic Lightning) operates a jungle warfare school at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. It is the only dedicated jungle school in the Army, and the first since the closing of the Jungle Operations Training Center(JOTC) at Ft. Sherman in the Panama Canal zone.
Okinawa Japan N.T.A. Jungle warfare training center is a tough long 10 day course with mud, snakes, obstacles, and ambushes and rain and bug's I was there in the Eighties . there's a lot of Jungle warfare training in the Army and Marines. Panama, Thailand and Philippines. also FT. Polk Luisiana. I did a 30 day training at FT. Polk also and I was assigned with the Marine snipers of Kilo company out of Camp Lejuene N.C. we were attacking entire platoons of insurgents in the swamps of a place known as ""THE BOX" a large training area on the Base that was used as the training ground for troops preparing to be sent to Vietnam in the Sixties. back then it was called "TIGERLAND" there's a Hollywood movie about it. good training and good experience. had a blast with that stuff. I am a retired U.S. Marine but worked with Army and Navy many many times. profession of arms.
@@magicmandj the 25th has been our Pacific division for decades. Inherently involves a lot of jungles. I was 4/25 in 3/509 PIR in Alaska but we still trained in Thailand, Australia, Hawaii, etc. It's a necessary capacity.

My dad was in Nam (1st Cav) in 66-67. He told me that when he first got in, they had everyone qualify with both the M-14 and M-16. They still used the M-14 in training even though everyone was going to be carrying the M-16 in country. So I suspect they used the M-14 in this video just for training.

I am a retired U.S.Marine and I loved it it was never about being elite, it was about doing your duty with as much Honor and integrity and American pride as we could possibly due. during Vietnam these forward S.F. camps were often times overrun with Vietcong guerrillas that would swarm in with close to 1,000 Guerrillas ad overwhelm the small encampments with mortars, A.K. 47s and R.P.G.'s and when that would happen a broken Arrow call for help would go out over the Radio frequencies.. C47 gun hip planes and Marine Corps Artillery and Infantry would often times get the help call and go risk it all to back up and fight with the Green Beret's in a group team work effort to Kill the Vietcong, now do you think those Green beret's cared about the title of "Elite Solider"? when they were under massive ground attack from Guerrilla forces who were trying like hell to Kill them and wipe their S.F. camp off the map in those Mountain areas of the Highlands? no it's just American forces helping other American forces. the "ELITE" nonsense and set your speaking of is generally an immature and unprofessional mind frame. we are all warriors and all have a job to do, Veterans Day shows respect and honor to ALL branches who served not just the U.S. Army. it's ARMY, AIR-FORCE, NAVY AND MARINES AND COAST GUARD AND NOW SPACE FORCE. you should rethink your arrogant position on separating branches based upon "ELITISM" or "WERE BETTER THAN THOSE GUYS" wether your a Grut, or an Artillery cannoneer or a Motor "T" true driver or a Supply clerk or a Tank crewman or maybe an admin clerk. or a sailor on a ship assigned to Sonar duty or maybe your a Boatswains mate. or a Cook, every person man or woman black or white , short or tall. "most unusual skills in military history" What a joke, only a fucking rube would believe this non-sense. Asymmetric, guerilla, so-called "irregular" warfare is actually more the norm of warfare in the human experience, than two armies of professionally trained soldiers getting together on a flat opened plain and slogging it out like it was a Saturday morning college football game. I know it is conventional to blame the lack of love from the hippies back home for the loss (yes loss) of the US in Vietnam. But in reality, after the military determination, will, and acumen of the enemy, and far above the lack of love from the hippies back home, is the hubris and stupidity that informs this kind of "the enemy is magically special" at doing what the weaker power has done in warfare, for the entire history of warfare.
So, in 21 days, 7 to 8 weeks of training was covered so this is probably the concept of why RASP is so short compared to other spec-ops entre level training.
LRP/LRRP training was mostly on the job training conducting live missions. Most LRPs did not go to recondo school because they were actually out running patrols. Real life experience is better than any training and LRPs where every bit is good as any spec ops teams operating at the time. Probably better actually as they had more experience than any other teams operating at the time.

Friend of mine went through RECONDO shool in Vietnam. There the final week was a real LRRP with contact with a real enemy!
Thats right, last part Recondo training was a live LRRP mission in hot area you either did your job because the alternative was a bag and toe tag.

30 years later I still remember how to tie a rappel seat with a rope. We did not have modern rappel gear.

Some of us can only imagine being in the ARMY at that time & era....My Grandfather, Father, other family were a part of the ARMY in this era .

I went through and graduated "RECONDO" in 1985 (18th Abn Corps, when going to 7th Inf Div LRSD) anf got to go again in early 1987, as one of the last classes when I was assd to 82nd Abn Div LRSD;313th MI) and really enjoyed both! I think it, along with SERE & Ranger school were the most valuable schools I went to.

What is being worn on the black ballcaps of the instructor cadre in this video here...is it a Grey and Black "RECONDO" tab? It doesnt look like itm but it could be.....?
I believe I remember black patrol caps with white name tape and cats eyes, and a grey tab with black border and lettering, above brite metal rank insignia. But it's been awhile, and s few TBIs later, I dont remember so good.....

I love this stuff.. one thing I noticed is that during the P.T. the instructors didn't participate in the p.t. I think that's a bad practice. If Ur in the mud with the troops they respect you if Ur willing to do push-ups with the men u lead then they will attack when u give the order...
While that's true, you gotta keep in mind some of these guys that got thrown into instruction during Vietnam and were really badly injured from their deployments, so it was the only way they could stay in. For Carlos Hathcock, for instance, he could barely walk and had so many bullet/shrapnel wounds that he could not pt with his students, but he was one of the deadliest snipers in US history.

I notice white tshirts and black leather boots that typically had 1930 style street soles. I went through this nonsense from 1963 through 1970 when I went to flight school. There, I was issued Korean War era equipment and leftover uniforms meant for armor personnel. Flying high performance fixed wing aircraft and finding our equipment inferior, most of us secured Air Force and navy flight suits, helmets, and oxygen masks. The army was more attuned to helicopter pilots smashing bugs at 100 knots or less.

Yes. The 25th infantry division(Tropic Lightning) operates a jungle warfare school at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii. It is the only dedicated jungle school in the Army, and the first since the closing of the Jungle Operations Training Center(JOTC) at Ft. Sherman in the Panama Canal zone.
Okinawa Japan N.T.A. Jungle warfare training center is a tough long 10 day course with mud, snakes, obstacles, and ambushes and rain and bug's I was there in the Eighties .
there's a lot of Jungle warfare training in the Army and Marines. Panama, Thailand and Philippines.
also FT. Polk Luisiana. I did a 30 day training at FT. Polk also and I was assigned with the Marine snipers of Kilo company out of Camp Lejuene N.C. we were attacking entire platoons of insurgents in the swamps of a place known as ""THE BOX" a large training area on the Base that was used as the training ground for troops preparing to be sent to Vietnam in the Sixties.
back then it was called "TIGERLAND" there's a Hollywood movie about it.
good training and good experience. had a blast with that stuff. I am a retired U.S. Marine but worked with Army and Navy many many times.

@@magicmandj the 25th has been our Pacific division for decades. Inherently involves a lot of jungles. I was 4/25 in 3/509 PIR in Alaska but we still trained in Thailand, Australia, Hawaii, etc. It's a necessary capacity.

My dad was in Nam (1st Cav) in 66-67. He told me that when he first got in, they had everyone qualify with both the M-14 and M-16. They still used the M-14 in training even though everyone was going to be carrying the M-16 in country. So I suspect they used the M-14 in this video just for training.

I am a retired U.S.Marine and I loved it it was never about being elite, it was about doing your duty with as much Honor and integrity and American pride as we could possibly due.
during Vietnam these forward S.F. camps were often times overrun with Vietcong guerrillas that would swarm in with close to 1,000 Guerrillas ad overwhelm the small encampments with mortars, A.K. 47s and R.P.G.'s and when that would happen a broken Arrow call for help would go out over the Radio frequencies.. C47 gun hip planes and Marine Corps Artillery and Infantry would often times get the help call and go risk it all to back up and fight with the Green Beret's in a group team work effort to Kill the Vietcong, now do you think those Green beret's cared about the title of "Elite Solider"? when they were under massive ground attack from Guerrilla forces who were trying like hell to Kill them and wipe their S.F. camp off the map in those Mountain areas of the Highlands?

we just have different mission parameters. Marines are Sea, Land and Air.
if u take a look the Marines have tactical fighter pilots that fly F22 Raptors. F18 fighter bomber jets and F35 Elite tactical Air superiority Jett aircraft.

but for you to not acknowledge the extreme capabilities of the Marine Corps is surprising to me Army has Rangers and Green Beret's Marines have Force Recon and Raiders Navy has SEALS Airforce has Para rescue, I was stationed at Camp Pendleton, 29 Palms CA, and Okinawa Japan, and the Korean D.M.Z went to many leadership schools Coronado Island and FT. Polk Louisiana I worked with Army units and Navy units. I don't go around bad mouthing any branch of service. never.

Bootcamp is a Marine Corps Term basic training is an Army term.
always has been that way officially as well as unofficially.I Served in a few different unit's it was never about who's the most elite. I worked with Army Rangers at Fort Polk they were professional they weren't beating their Chests and saying HEY WE'RE BETTER THAN YOU. I think that's something you need to consider and perhaps mature in that area of your thinking as a Warrior and Leader.

Asymmetric, guerilla, so-called "irregular" warfare is actually more the norm of warfare in the human experience, than two armies of professionally trained soldiers getting together on a flat opened plain and slogging it out like it was a Saturday morning college football game. I know it is conventional to blame the lack of love from the hippies back home for the loss (yes loss) of the US in Vietnam. But in reality, after the military determination, will, and acumen of the enemy, and far above the lack of love from the hippies back home, is the hubris and stupidity that informs this kind of "the enemy is magically special" at doing what the weaker power has done in warfare, for the entire history of warfare.

So, in 21 days, 7 to 8 weeks of training was covered so this is probably the concept of why RASP is so short compared to other spec-ops entre level training.
LRP/LRRP training was mostly on the job training conducting live missions. Most LRPs did not go to recondo school because they were actually out running patrols. Real life experience is better than any training and LRPs where every bit is good as any spec ops teams operating at the time. Probably better actually as they had more experience than any other teams operating at the time.
