  • History Channel interview about 5Th Group Special Forces MACV Recondo School. Author Larry Chambers vividly describes the guts and courage it took to pass the though volunteer-only training program during the Vietnam War. Here is an unforgettable account as Chambers relives the hair-raising graduation mission where his team captures an NVA officer. Recondo school, was the subject of a History Channel television educational special.
What most distinguished the Special Forces Recondo School from any other in the history of the American military was its final exam -- a reconnaissance mission deep within enemy territory, miles from friendly ground troops, and with absolutely no support. It was a trial by fire, where students were sometimes wounded or killed. That’s how Recondo School got its reputation as the “deadliest school on earth”.
Chambers wrote about the school in his first book: Recondo - LRRP in the 101st Airborne.

Mr. Larry R. Chambers? Hi my name is Zachary Findlay-Maddox, I work with your son at New Leaf Market, and it is an honor to meet you via internet. I've read your book, and it was AMAZING. I am a former Marine myself, I served at Marine Barracks 8th & I Washington D.C. and was in the funeral honor guard and was there when 9/11 attacks happened, when something hit the pentagon. Welcome home.

I hope this is the author of Recondo. That book was a great read and I read it over 10 years ago, and I’m about to reread it again. Before I do, I did a RUclips search on LRRP and found this vid. I hope all is well!

I used to be able to easily find this entire episode to watch somewhere on the internet, but in 2024 I can't seem to find it anywhere. I know Capt. Larry T. Manes and he is in the episode because he was an instructor there, so I would like to download and save it if possible.

Hey Zach take care of my son and thank you for your service; my second father as a kid was Joe Rosenthall the guy who took the photo of Marines raising the flag. I have one of the few signed photos I figure I would sell it to a rich Marine if i can find one.

The US had 'Recodos', the Aussies had the 'SAS'. THANK YOU GUYS, for feeding us with vital intel. Your missions saved many lives and like the Recodos, our SAS have never been fully acknowledged for their meritorious efforts.

Most LRPs did not get to attend Recondo school because they were actually out running missions and did not have the luxury of taking a break to attend class. The best training was to be out in the field.
