Not all songs deserve an orchestral arrangement. This is one that does.
Great Performance !
Right you are, Karina! As a musician, I find this remarkable for several reasons. The arranger has chosen to introduce the piece by playing the melody in the minor key of C major. This immediately creates a somber mood. Soloing the oboe conveys another layer of nostalgic feeling. Then, just before Brooker's vocal starts, the instruments play a perfect Tierce de Picardie, shifting the melody back into the major. Brilliant! The finale has the entire ensemble performing a sus4 to sus2 and resolving into the major. Delicious tension to end a powerhouse arrangement!
I got married late in 1966 and this came out early in 1967 and immediately became my late husband and my very favourite records. Now still love it but brings tears to heart because he is not here to share it with me. Gary Brooks passed away in 2022. Brilliant orchestral recording. Blessings to you from South Africa.
A true masterpiece of a song. This live version just elevates it to the next level
As much as I love the original, the hauntingly beautiful orchestral support and background vocals bring tears to my eyes every time I hear this version. Thanks much!
I listened to this song 100's of times as a teen in the late 60's. Gary Booker, the singer of Procol Harum sounds even better over 40 years later. This song is a classic and was HUGE back in the day. This performance is a MASTERPIECE, The orchestral and choral arrangements are amazing with so many layers. I have seen this one over 20 times and still get chills that send me back to my younger days. God, I wish I could have been at that concert with such amazing musicians. WOW
I was 18 when this single hit the US top 5 in 1967, I still have my 45 RPM, I think his voice has aged like fine wine and even sounds better today.
Best version of this song I've ever heard/seen. I liked the studio version very much as a teen back in the 60's but this version is the best. There's a reason it has over 61 million views!!! Thank you!
His name is Brooker...I believe they are from England...
I was a little skeptical when I first heard that you had no clue who Procal Harum are, but watching you get into the group with the vocal and orchestral accompaniment, I'd suggest you check out "Nights in White Satin" by the Moody Blues.
FYI - Procol Harum is Latin for "beyond some thing"
John Lennon said this was one of the greatest songs her ever heard
If you loved this, you will love 'Nights In White Satin', by The Moody Blues, featuring the London Orchestra
Glad you enjoyed it, we did back in the 60’s as teenagers and still do today now as pensioners. We lived through an amazing time for music and we’re lucky to have done so.
This just sends me over the top emotional. The mixture of the music, the awesome voice of this man, the tone of the song, the enjoyment of the reactor, the memories of my youth just pour out everytime I listen to it. Beautiful!
Their layering is beautiful
I just love this version. Brings tears to my eyes.
Agreed 💯
This is just a fantastical arrangement of an always beautiful song. Love Gary Brooker's voice and his power even better as he ages, like a fine wine. I never tire of this song and many others they have done. Sadly Gary passed away this past February from cancer. May he RIP. sweet man.
The best reaction, from the heart to a beautiful song. I was born in the 50's and this is so beautiful. 'Right up my street' Yes!
That voice. Aged but so well aged. This is an iconic song for a very long time and this performance makes it more iconic. Nice reaction!
True Artist(s) take you on a journey with them and bring you back at the end. This is a wonderful example of that. This Song shakes to me to my core. Pure beauty. ❤
Your facial expressions tells us everything. Probably one of the best musical renditions ever. Superb
I was 20 when this song came out in 1967. It’s my favorite song from the 60’s. Actually it’s my favorite of all time.
This was not just a rendition. This was almost an original sang by the guy who sang it in the first place, AND...one afternoon at a party, john lennon and george harrison sat in the back of John's car, listening to this song over and over again and agreeing that song writing could never progress beyond this song. What does that tell you?
I have lived in Cambodia for ten years and many a time i have heard this song done by a Cambodian band in their language. Cambodians were also into the music of that time and had a lot of groups.
Definitely best version ever of this classic from the 60s. This was the days when lyrics were clever and forced the listener to think and make their own interpretation. And Gary doesn’t over sing. A masterpiece!
At the end, immediately after he thanks the audience, Gary's facial expression seems to say, "Yeah, we absolutely nailed it tonight!"
Thats a stunning performance. And his voice even became better in all theese years. His voice was excellent in 67 though when this song came out. It is based on J.S.Bachs "Air". Brooker said that he tried to play Bachs "air" by heart but did´n remind exactly , so what came out is this beautiful song.
You should have seen the expression on your face when you heard his voice... love your reaction... you would have loved living in that era...
Hey Matt. There were only 43 songs in history that have sold over 10 million physical copies. That's one of them.
Due to this performance, this song has popped into my top favorite songs. I need to re-examine my list.
I've been watching different reactors to this performance for a few days, and can't seem to kick it out. When he hits that final chorus, I cry like a little girl. I don't know what it is, but it gets me.
My favourite performance of my favourite song of all time .
I think his voice is even better here than in '77 when it was released. I love the song & the setting.
Procol Harum was an English band. I heard the song, without the orchestra, on the 1967 tour for this song, album, release. I was at Fillmore West in San Francisco with Phil Graham's light show and a multitude of flower children. A psychedelic colored memory that changed my life.
Man like somebody else commented when the lady in the choir hit that high note it was heard all the way over in Denmark. Crown jewel of a song.
It was in Denmark 😂
This was an anthem of my youth! The squares didn’t understand the lyrics so it got a lot of AM radio play! Hahahaha!!
Vocalist, orchestra, band, choral, piano, and organ. Such memories!
Well, this song has been “right up my alley” since 1967 as it has been with all the people I grew up with in London in the 60s.
This orchestral arrangement and performance of this iconic song is quite magical! Many comments mention being moved to tears. This is the mystical power of music. Whether a trip down memory lane for some or first-time listeners, there is something quite profound about this performance.
This hit was #5 on the charts for several weeks in 1967…..& has been coined as an anthem for that “summer of love”!!
Right up my alley. What a fantastic reaction
And he's still knocking it out at 72 yrs old here.
One of the best reactions yet to this marvelous performance....even better than his original rendition ..
listening to this brings me tears. i was 13 then in 1967 when i heard this magnificent song sung by lead vocalist Gary Booker (RIP). hearing it again after 39 years gave me goosebumps. wonderful rendition again sad to say Gary Booker passed away last Feb. 19, 2022 at the age of 76. he left us with this beautiful song. btw, PR9COL HARUM means BEYOND LIMITS. they are from Birmingham.
The evergreen Procol Harum Song. Just amazing !!!
This orchestral version makes me feel the way I did when I was 10 and heard the full version of Nights In White Satin by The Moody Blues. Not the radio edit version but the extended version with the spoken lament at the end. Chills bro!
Thank you for reacting to this masterpiece. English not Danish. Procol Harum roughly translates as "beyond these things". This was their first hit from 1967. The singer is Gary Brooker and the lyricist Keith Reid. The original recording has been remastered for the 50th anniversary and is well worth checking out. Other notable songs of theirs include Grand Hotel, Homburg, Conquistador, and A Salty Dog.
The solo on Grand Hotel takes my breath away even after all these years. Not fast nor flashy just PERFECT.
@@yoseffeigenbaum9639 I couldn't agree more.
Interestingly this song was not on the British version of the album in 1967. However it was included on the American album. The rest is history.
I've watched this over and over. Magnificent!
Loved your reaction, especially how it sent you into the stratosphere hearing it for the first time. I'm 73, and was a teenager when the original was released in 1967. I loved it then, has always been a favorite of mine, even John Lennon said is was his favorite. This performance, with the full orchestra, chorus, Brooker's amazing voice, and the obligatory Hammond organ brought it to a whole new level. A musical masterpiece for sure. If you read up on the history of this song, you will see that it owes a lot to Bach, believe it or not. The mix of rock and classical and the chord progressions just seem to elicit a profound emotional response.
There have been many artists, including John Lennon, Phil Collins, and Peter Frampton just to name a few that have said this is there favorite song of all time. Very powerful and everlasting music.
their not there!
Gary Brewer was the singer, and. The piano player ,Gary passed away on February 3033,he will be missed by millions off fans. Rest in peace.
Brooker
I’m glad that was born in this era . Only amazing music This one by Procol Harum lead singer Gary Brooker sadly he died RIP .
Please don't try to figure out the lyrics, people have been trying for 50 years and they haven't got any closer. It's kind of a snapshot through a couples relationship as if it was a film. The writer was heavily into French film noir at the time. Whatever the answer is it's a journey and it's as beautiful as it was in 1967 - timeless.
Keith Reid's lyrics (poetry, really) have always been somewhat enigmatic and erudite with numerous literary references. The Gary Brooker / Keith Reid collaboration remains unmatched today for sheer musicianship and story telling - with the possible exception of Tuomas Holopainen of Nightwish.
The song along with this video has a way of pulling something out of you that you didn't know was hiding the side of you
Just incredible to me! With the orchestra really helped too. They are an incredible british band. xx
RIP Gary Brooker, thanks for this classic which will endure for perpetuity.
the lyrics contain a considerable amount of period context. in this case psycodelic way. Mixed emotions than one used to feel on the occasion of a first meeting between a boy and a girl. nervousness expectations, shame, desire to be reciprocated. I don't know if it's still like that today... but at that time it was exactly how we felt. the music brings all these sensations back to those who lived and was young in that time. Thx Procol thx Johan sebastian bach! Because without the "air G string" this one would not be possible to exist.
Gut wrenching & magical ❤
I've loved this song all of my 50 years
loved loved loved your reaction!!
They were a group from England in the 60’s! Even though the song sounds very prim and proper it was about an LSD trip! Great memories for me from the late 60’s!
English 🏴🇬🇧 We have the best musicians ❤️ God bless Gary. RIP 😢❤️
Procol Harum despite their name are an English rock band. This song was their first, released way back in 1967, it spent six weeks at the top of the UK 🇬🇧 Charts and peaked at No.5 in the USA Billboard 100, it has sold 10 million copies worldwide and there are over 1,000 known cover versions by other artists.
The lead vocal and pianist is Gary Brooker, founder of the group.
It is a sad thing to report that he passed away in February 2022 😢
I was just leaving my home to get a little breakfast at a nearby diner but I saw this on the computer and had to play it before I leave! The meeting of two genre's like this turned into something magic. AND YOU REACTION IS CLASSIC. WOW!!!!! YOU GENUINELY LOVED EVERY SECOND OF THIS, as I did, too! Have a nice day Matt!
I love that you did not break in
FINALLY! a reviewer who does not feel more important than the music by making his image smaller than the subject video! Most of them have themselves huge and the artist small. Who wants their egos obscuring timeless musical art?
Masterpiece was the word you were looking for.
Loved that reaction too, brother.. whoever recommended this kudos to them as well…your energy was blast.. everything A+
This song , so many lovely memories ! 🎶🎶
Timeless classic!!!! Enough said!!🤘🤘🎵🎼🎶🎸🥁🎧
Best song ever written
Many amazing moments from this concert. Procol Harum made something of a think of playing with live orchestras - they have a highly celebrated concert with Edmonton Symphony Orchestra very early in their career which includes 'In Held Twas In I' which was their 19 minute opus.
The performance of "A Salty Dog" from this concert left me gobsmacked.
@@MikeB3542 I agree. That one always leaves me wrecked - speaking of which...
I loved it when you said, "What's there not to like about that that?"
A little history: Gary Brooker of the band Procol Harum wrote and first performed this song in 1967 with his six piece band. You can find this version on youtube. His voice is so much better now than it was back then.
I had been reading online that the meaning of this song had to do with a sexual encounter gone awry but I disagree totally. Although some of the lines don't make sense to me, it is obvious that the guy is performing before an audience and he's higher than a kite. He's feeling sick and wants to quit but the crowd called out for more. "The room was humming harder as the ceiling flew away" is the effects of whatever drug he has taken. "When we called out for another drink, the waiter brought a tray." He's performing in a nightclub and drinks are served on a tray by waitresses. I agree a lot of the song is mish-mash but Gary explained that. He said that he was high when he was writing it and some of the lines just fit the space he was trying to fill so he put it in. He's still a genius in my book. The music omg!!! The orchestra here was not part of the studio recording or in any previous live performances before this one in 2006. I think it was just done here to throw people off that are very familiar with this song. 💖
Holy smokes! Someone is - or was - really high when this story was made up! Gary Brooker did NOT write the lyrics. Repeat: Gary Brooker did NOT write the lyrics.
Keith Reid wrote ALL the lyrics to ALL of Procul Harum's songs. He has never said he was high when he wrote the lyrics (maybe inspired when high - but certainly NOT high when he wrote the lyrics). Reid stated quite unequivocally that he is describing or trying to evoke a girl leaves boy story.
This is such a beautiful arrangement of this song.
Yeah man yeah!
Perfection doesn´t exist, it´s just what one should strive for, this performance is however damn close.
è da 45 anni che mi emoziona questa canzone dei PROCOL HARUM...........
Step 1 - Orchestra prelude
Step 2 - Gary Brooker and orchestra
Step 3 - Gary Brooker + orchestra + band (Procol Harum) + choir
“A WHITER SHADE OF PALE” was released by Procol Harum in 1967 and it was their first single
❤ RIP Gary Brooker 1945 - 2022
*PROCOL HARUM is a latin expression that means "beyond these things”, but the legend tells that was a Burmese Blue cat, that belonged to a friend of the band and that he lived until 1972. The cat’s name was actually Procul Harun, but the cat’s name was misspelled.
“The room was humming harder as the ceiling flew away!”
EMERSON, LAKE AND PALMER: FANFARE FOR THE COMMON MAN,
LIVE AT THE FOOTBALL STADIUM! 😀
This gives me goosebumps and brings tears to my eyes. His voice and the orchestra =perfection ❤
Fantastic, thank you!
the incomimg crescendo by the oboe is genius
FYI, Procol Harum is Latin for "beyond these things". The members of the group include Gary Brookes (keyboards and lead vocals, Robin Trower on guitar and Keith Reid, although IDK what instrument he plays and if you're watching their performance at a Renaissance Festival in Denmark, having what appears to be the country's symphony, I guess the percussion section has been taken care of, but IDK who is playing the organ, which as you listen the 1st verse is introduced by music from the orchestra. If you listen to the studio single, the organ that begins the 2nd verse is the song's real opening. Since this has been my favorite song since I was a kid and never cared how bad my voice was when I'd hear it on the radio and belt out my...the sound that came from my vocal chords but definately NOT singing...I was 8 or 10yo, so sue me...until I could Google the actual lyrics, I've spent DECADES "singing" the wrong lyrics, but now that I know the true lyrics, I can still belt out my sound with the correct lyrics. I hope, if you for some reason don't like this version you take the extra 15 mins to listen to the studio version.
the hammond organ was build in the 60's...you can see the sign "Hammond" it's original with all the registers
He still has it.. killing those lines..superb Talent..hats off..Sir. Their performance was like a kind of dish full of flavors until the very last spoonful..Just Amazing.👌👌👌👌
It’s the late 60’s and I’m at my first high school dance. I ask Nancy Harris to dance and she says yes. Procol Harum starts to play and I have my hands on a girl’s wast and I smell what a girls smells like and I hear this song. Tell me this isn’t important to me.
Did you marry her?
Konser PH, di Denmark ini yg paling bagus....
Selamat jalan Gary Brooker.. Damai di surga🤲🤲🤲
the greatest songs ever written. original 1967 , gary brooker fantastic , hit # 1 at the time in nearly every country of the world .. yes people had to be able to sing and play instruments before and during the 60's and 70's no auto tube, no gimmicks, no synthesizers, no half naked people dancing around ,,,,,and half the time the live performances where even better than the recordings ,,, just be there with a mic and belt it out.
I think the word you were looking for was EPIC.. The original is awesome, this version is EPIC haha.. Take care brother..
The band's was named after a cat. Check out the 1967 version when you get the chance.
This just an amazing piece of music combing rock and classical music.👍🏼
John Lennons faviorite song, 2006 Denmark Procol Harum, Gary Brooker, recently passed away...RIP
R.I.P. Procol Harum singer Gary Brooker May 29, 1945 - February 19, 2022.
Conquistador and Salty Dog are two more great songs from this performance!
The band got their name, Procol Harum, from a friend's cat. It was only later after becoming well-known that their fans informed them that it was actually an incorrect translation of 'beyond these things' in Latin.
I’ve always loved this song❤️
the song was/is based on Aria on G string by JS Bach .
Matt, this put you right into 7th Heaven, didn't it?
OMG! This is fantastic. Of course I was around for the original but this brought the original to another level. Wow....
Please consider reacting to their "Conquistador" from this same
concert performance, or even the original 1971 live version
Fantastic thank you
From the same concert, check out Conquistador. Rock, Jazz, Orchestra in a wild mélange in a history lesson.
what do you get an orchestra and rock together and you get a masterpiece. listen to the moody blues
So true!
Love your reactions
One of my faaavys too !! Band is Brit from 6O/7Os Period of brillant symphonic rock that inspired bands like Pink Flloyd,ELO Barry White etc. BUT Beatles reshaped ALL pop music with White album I think & started it ALL ??
A Hypnotic Hymn!
Saw Procul Harum at Trent Poly (now Nottingham Trent University) in the early 1970s. Memorable
Spectacular....
This performance ruins the impact of so much lesser music. So many layers of effect. Non stop, one emotion transitioned immediately to another. Back around again. Torn apart and elevated at once. Over and over again. What a performance.
