This should be shown to every phone videographer:
    1) Horizontal format
    2) Gets out from behind dirty / broken window, points camera at subject, not feet, sky, etc.
    3) Doesn't talk, no hysterical shrieking from anyone else in vehicle (which would have hidden the legit reaction of the truck driver)

I don't know how they do it in Oklahoma but obviously the train made random left turn, hit the car carrier, sent the Jeep airborne, quickly turned right back on the track and carried on. To those who wonder why all crossings aren't rebuilt so that auto haul trucks specifically can clear them... first, this would cost an ungodly amount of money - for one specific type of truck. Professional drivers wouldn't let themselves get caught in this situation. Carhaulers ride very low and their drivers know this. They know this as a fact. I'm a 30-year veteran truck driver, and that includes auto haul, and there is no way a professional auto hauler would have even attempted to get over that sharp crest.
Trailers only bottom out if the drivers puts it there. Trailers only hit low bridges if the driver puts it there. In short, trucks only go wherever the driver puts them - and a low-slung trailer is a hazard the driver is responsible for knowing how to negotiate. Period.
Absolutely no sympathy for this idiot who could very well have killed any number of people. My thoughts are with the locomotive crew, seeing that truck looming ahead and knowing this could very well be the end of their lives and there's nothing they can do about it.

@@stevenphillips6019 A friend has property adjacent to a very rural road in NW GA that has a very old bridge (ca. 1930) that had a 5 ton load limit sign. This road is a shortcut of about 3 miles, and there are signs at each end that say "Bridge ahead - Load Limit 5 Tons Local traffic only."
Many times they would hear semis and there would be a 40 ton truck easing across the bridge. Occasionally, one would back up a mile to a spot where they could turn around. One day there was a large touring bus (25 tons) stopped on the bridge while the passengers took photos of the creek.
The reason for the truckers taking this route - to avoid a truck scale on the main road. That indicates THEY KNEW THE TRUCK WAS OVERWEIGHT for even the main highway. They took the risk anyway, proving that there are some really stupid drivers out there on our roads.
The overloadings damaged the bridge and it is now blocked off. My friends now have to drive 7 miles around to get to their property across the bridge.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PEOPLE PLEASE CALL THE NUMBER ON THE BLUE SIGN AT THE CROSSING IF YOU EVER GET STUCK ON THE TRACKS
The police cannot communicate with the trains, however, calling that number alerts dispatch which can alert the train before they reach the crossing
Edit: I posted this comment to try and save lives. Your arguments below are absolutely petulant and make you look like children. Yes, the SECOND number you should always call in this situation is 911, and this is one of the only situations where 911 is the second number you call. The blue sign with a 1800 number is the DIRECT LINE to that railroad and dispatch, and it also has the milepost marker and railroad information. This is VITAL information.

I had to call dispatch while in Tuscaloosa, Alabama a few years ago. We had a train go into emergency and block almost all of the crossings in the city. One crossing was clear, but the train was still inside the "zone" of the sensors. I called dispatch, told them what was going on. They knew about the train and had a team out already. They sent one of them to the crossing, to verify the crossing was clear, and then overrode the crossbucks. That person stayed at the crossing with the PD until the train came back online, and when it did, he re engaged the crossbucks so the train could back if needed... all from the info on one little sticker!

I've seen videos of cars getting hit by freight trains that stopped just a few seconds later. The driver called 911 instead of going straight to the crossing hotline. The time that the 911 dispatcher took to get through to the train controller could've saved them.
In this case though, there was no time to stop.
It's also important to use the crossing hotline for non-emergency stuff like gates stuck up or down. 911 doesn't need to hear about that because they can't fix it.

    • @jovetj
      @jovetj 2 года назад +1

@@RsRj-qd2cg Impacting a vehicle will slow down a train some, but different trains take longer to stop than others. The main factors are the speed of the train and the weight of the train. Passenger trains, like this one, tend to be faster but lighter. Freight trains can be a mix of empty and loaded wagons, and are heavier. Most trains aim to go as fast as they can on their section of track because time is money.
There are several different types of brakes on a train. The main brakes are operated by air pressure from the lead locomotive(s). When the brake line is pressurized, the brakes turn off. The train driver (engineer) can adjust this pressure to engage the brakes as needed based on the terrain and conditions of the track. In an emergency, or if the brake line is severed (such as two train cars separating from each other because of a broken coupler or the like), the brake pressure drops to zero very quickly, and this causes all the brakes on all the wagons to engage as quickly as possible. This alone can cause the train to derail, because it's an uncontrolled braking sequence. While emergency brakes can be engaged at any moment, most train crews will not do so until collision is imminent because of the risk of a possible serious derailment.

It's fascinating as well that the engine did not completely derail and either flipped or rolled. It's also amazing that there are no fatalities, but serious injuries. Goes to show that looking outside of windows is not always a safe job. Let alone, the mental impact it could have on the driver of the truck, train, and witness. Stay safe truck and rail drivers!

Just watched it in slow-mo. It's hard to tell, but one for sure thing is that the locomotive is severely tilted on the ass end on initial impact. Even in regular speed, that motion is still noticeable. However, it's uncertain if the trucks really came up from the ground, but the investigation shall make up that decision. This reminds me of the Mer Rouge, LA accident where an NS train hit a lowboy. Of course, those consequences were much more severe.

There are a couple of reasons for people to know that all RR crossings have a number assigned to them and most of them also have the RR Dispatcher emergency phone number posted with the crossing number. Foremost of these is situations like this where the truck got high centered on the tracks and could not get off. However, there is also a FRA rule that prohibits a train crew from leaving their train blocking a crossing, outside of yard limits, for more than 15 minutes. If they can't move off the crossing for an extended period of time, they are supposed to split the train and park the 2 sections of cars 200 feet from either side of the crossing. If you are blocked by a train at a crossing and they have not moved for more than 15 minutes, call that phone number and give the crossing number and how long you have been there. The dispatcher will get them to move or split the train.

Supposed to and doing are two different things. The book, rules, and laws were written by a bunch of desk jockeys who know nothing about how the real world operates. You can call dispatch and say something. No matter how nicely you ask, 99.9% of the time it doesn't work if they are waiting for another movement to clear a siding or for space in a yard. They police can come out and ticket them every fifteen minutes, but chances are that ticket is going to go unpaid. I deal with this several times a week and have grown accustomed to the problem. Norfolk Southern and CSX and I'm sure the other major class 1's aren't going to waste time doing the hokey pokey uncoupling trains, setting hand brakes, recoupling, taking hand brakes off, and doing brake tests if they don't have to.

Just let’s forget the truck driver for one moment,..and let’s imagine that was a tree , what the train driver would do ?!
I’m sure the train driver is trained for a situation like that,…to me look like the train driver hit the truck on purpose,..trying to claim from his insurance,…if he had a tree in front , the train driver would stop !
What is the point having a train driver , when he or she can’t react if a situation like that occurs !
A lot here say , a train can’t stop like a car,..we all know that,..but we also know when you go through crossing points, train driver must slow down the speed also look a head for any hazard,…and from years of experience, the train driver must know the distance to stop if an obstruction is blocking his way !

Low boy trailers are scary as fuck to get over a railroad crossing. That’s a sure way to derail a train if you get stuck with one of those.
I heard the engineer was injured. I hope that the other 3 who were injured are also okay.
As a railroader, this is a scenario that scares the living shit out of me.
As for truckers, it’s likely an innocent mistake, which I really feel bad for that poor driver. All that income is gone.
But it really bothers me that grade crossings like this are left open for a trucker to accidentally access. I wish there was better signage or something within our GPS maps systems that could notify truckers or motorists of geographically difficult crossings like this one.
If you drive over a crossing with a hump that a trailer of any kind could get stuck on, that’s a fatal mistake with fate just begging to happen.
And I wouldn’t wish that on anybody.
