Tom Smith, no it won’t, but it would eliminate all the other debt, plus at least temporarily stop the garnishment, so it might at least help with cash flow. But, with the number of kids he has vs his income, he MIGHT be able to get it discharged on the basis that he’s technically at the poverty level. That’s a huge maybe though. I’m not a lawyer.
Considering they’ve been making it this long on $35k, he ought to get the bankruptcy to avoid the garnishment, a higher paying job or get a side job (Uber, Lyft etc..) he’s only 27 so I can imagine all of the 4 kids are under 10yrs old. He has to grind uncomfortably hard for at least a good 2yrs

They may have to get incredibly creative, but it’s better than staying stuck in their current situation.
In my area child care is about as much as a mortgage or more. It’s sad. About $800-1000 month per kid. They’re actually saving money with her staying home but she should at least work the weekends.
Exactly! You kept having them knowing your situation. He didn’t have a plan to finish school for you owe multiple schools, NO DEGREE, and have 4 kids! His terrible school track record happened before the 4 Kids, so....
Yeah, Dave told him "Just make more money!" Really though it might be a good idea to do the bankruptcy first to clear out what he can and then get more income coming in. All that past due debt is gonna hang over him for years anyway why not just try to get it cleared with bankruptcy. IDK, just a thought.
@@philcarpenter because it all won't be cleared away. That student loan debt does not go away in a bankruptcy - $50,000.00. Wrong, there are plenty of jobs in biology. The problem is that they don't pay as much as people think and aren't all that glamorous. You can get a steady job paying ~$50,000 right out of undergrad as a tech in an R&D or clinical lab if you have a bit of internship/research experience.
I have a biology degree and make 60,000 a year. You just have to do your research into different jobs and what they require. My job required a certificate with the degree, without it I probably would have been jobless after college or underemployed

I feel like the Dave Ramsey show should have a call screener that gathers all of the basic information from the caller before they even talk to Dave. They should have a standard form that they fill out with the caller's household income and debts and payments. The screener types all of that into a computer form and Dave sees it all on his screen when he takes the call. Then he could quickly review it with the caller and get right in to the question. And then he could ask more questions if need be. Sometimes it takes forever for the callers to actually describe their situation.
It's a radio show! The entire format is to involve the listener. If there was no back story told during the call the listener wouldn't be interested. It's like watching a traffic crash scene...you want the gory details.

Sure we could move somewhere with higher wages, but then the cost of living goes up. He feels like hes drowning and theres no hope. We're starting a business so hopefully that's my families solution to our income problem.
Having kids is not the problem, they are great, but not being able to take care of them in ALL aspect of life is beyond sad. There is no joy in being stress just because, you can't feed your kids basic food, thinking where you will get money to pay rent. I had a family friend that has 9 children, there is nobody that won't envy them, because of the love, joy, comfort and all round awesomeness in the home. The parents were teacher and accountant, salary earners that lived in a 5 bedroom house, no luxury but had everything they ever needed, and the least successful of the children is a Pharmacist. Children are precious!
Not judging anyone. Sometimes we tend to get stuck every now and then. We must learn to reinvent ourselves. We are living in the most exciting and amazing times of mankind. Everyone in a house must pitch in helping create more money. Information is at our fingertips. Get mom, kids, pets, and whole house involve in getting out of this mess. Everyone will benefit by being debt free. Thank you Dave for your wise advice.
Why keep having children? After the first one they should have been more careful. Finishing school with one kid is more doable then with more. Will never understand what goes through people’s mind.
If it’s a school debt, it’s still likely not eligible for bankruptcy. I filed bankruptcy in 2011 and they wouldn’t allow me to include the $2-3k I owed the school.
I'm a supervisor of laboratory scientists. All our biology people have to get a second degree or they are our assisstants who have the same job as people with a high school diploma. Most have huge student loans because they need a second degree to make money. To be a laboratory professional get a Medical Laboratory Scientist degree not biology. This is the main reason for crippling student loan debt, getting a degree that has no job associated with it.

His first mistake was having kids during college. He needs to deal with his mistakes; it will teach him invaluable lessons. He is living in a bubble. 🤦🏻♂️ Mommy needs to work and close the baby factory.
Four children is hardly a factory, and her working just means valuable income being poured into daycare. There has to be a middle way where she can gain an additional income without sacrificing her children's upbringing.
So somehow he never thought to stop having kids to finish his degree and set himself up for a better situation?
@dachicagoan weird for you to think that way
@@twincherry4958 he's got a point lol
@@fredrikb343 I posted the response to the wrong comment 🤷♀️
But he did...now what??

This man’s life is a disaster. Yikes. They’ve dug a big hole for themselves.
Actually...I just looked it up and the median income in Toledo is $35K, so the caller is right. And I love how the answer is "just move" as if it's that easy. Moving costs money! And where do you move where the cost of living is lower?
DR: "Toledo, Ohio is not a depressed market where the average income is $32,000!"
Me: Google, what is the average income in Toledo, Ohio?
Google: $19,113 per year
Me: Google, what is the median household income in Toledo, Ohio?
Google: $33,485 per year
Bruh.
Ouch
Dave Ramsey is awesome.
RUclips interjects commercials every 2 minutes killing the video.
Double your hours and it will double your income. Once out of debt, invest the excess income into something that increases your income. That could be college, but it could be a business, self-improvement seminars, or certifications.
Well you are correct but all that requires time, money, ability, opportunity for employment, etc. Easiest thing to do is to use current skills and rise through the ranks of his current job if possible. I am in the mist of trying to acquire skills and it is both time and expensive and I already have 39K cash as a buffer too.
"I did not get to finish due to having kids." Just another excuse. I have lots of friends and family members going to school while working full time. You just have to find a way to make it work. Even taking one or two classes each quarter/semester. Do what you know you have to do. Life is tough.
He is actually correct. The average individual income in Toledo was $23,447 in 2019.
He did say if that's true then he needs to leave
Dave handles this call so professionally and hopefully awakened the guy’s dreams. Good luck to him. But please don’t have anymore kids unless you can provide good life them !
How many calls involve student loans? Too many!
Wife needs to work.
Daycare would eat up her check and impact their families dynamic.
@@ChristopherInTexas And you think being $100k in debt doesn't impact the family dynamics?? They're BROKE!!!
Why can't she work weekends and he pick up an extra job during the week in the evenings?? That way one of them is always home with the kids...
John Lester problem with that is they wouldn’t get any sleep. If they’re young kids, the parent that stays home during the night would be up and down all night because little kids don’t always sleep through the night. Then the parent working nights wouldn’t sleep because as soon as they come home, it’s be time for the kids to wake up.
@@ChristopherInTexas and 100k in dept doesnt?
No, actually the man needs to provide for his own just like so many other large family men do.
Bankruptcy won't impact student loans so.... he needs a better job🤷🏾♀️
me_not_me_2008 so true!
Oh well it is what it is can’t die with it
Yet that's basically it......
$50K of student loans and 4 kids on $35K a year, I don't see how that is possible.
Are you kidding me ?😢
I did not know that
Why not
@@priscilapuente8327 because student loans are government-backed and the government always makes sure it gets its money back.
Bless his heart! I wish him well!
Dave was wrong about 1 thing the average household income in Toledo Ohio is 39k the dude was right
school loans make doing bankruptcy useless
I feel like the Dave Ramsey show should have a call screener that gathers all of the basic information from the caller before they even talk to Dave. They should have a standard form that they fill out with the caller's household income and debts and payments. The screener types all of that into a computer form and Dave sees it all on his screen when he takes the call. Then he could quickly review it with the caller and get right in to the question. And then he could ask more questions if need be. Sometimes it takes forever for the callers to actually describe their situation.
Corey Burnett great idea!!
Take this idea Dave!!!!
Its psychology to say it out loud on the air, it can help people begin to see the severity of their problem
Dave likely already knows... he asks so the audience knows their income etc.
It's a radio show! The entire format is to involve the listener. If there was no back story told during the call the listener wouldn't be interested. It's like watching a traffic crash scene...you want the gory details.
And I'm here debating whether my husband and I should go for baby #2. I feel selfish lol 😅. Kids do slow down things for a bit, especially for mom but they are an amazing gift from God.
I feel for this guy. We are in a very similar situation, minus the debt. I know what he means when he says 35k is considered decent. It is in my area too. Sure we could move somewhere with higher wages, but then the cost of living goes up. He feels like hes drowning and theres no hope. We're starting a business so hopefully that's my families solution to our income problem.
I'm glad he called Dave because Dave is nit judgemental. This guy already knows he messed up and doesn't need anyone to make him feel worse.
I have 4 kids, no regrets. Stop shaming people for having children. They are a blessing.
That's not what this is about. That isn't what any of this is about
Not judging anyone.
27 years old 4 kids 100000 in debt that's financial stupidity and badd planning decision...
The school filed a document to block it. How classy of these schools? Charging $$$, getting government funds, calling themselves nonprofits and then refusing to share diploma or seek garnishing wages for their graduates.
