This surprise TORTERRA set is INCREDIBLE • Pokemon Scarlet/Violet VGC Battles

- Torterra sees very little competitive play right now, even after getting access to Shell Smash, but this defensive set featuring Iron Defense, Amnesia, Body Press, and Synthesis is incredibly strong and difficult for teams to deal with. With the proper support, it can singlehandedly destroy teams!

Aww it’s cute that the little terrastalize hat is on the tree 😂
😊
Torterra, my beloved. My first ever starter, ‘ol reliable. So glad to see him included in a team.
Likewise, I've been waiting to use him in compet for so long but sadly my love for compet has kinda died with scarlet/violets release
Well torterra wasn’t your first starter. Turtwig was
Since I had tortoises growing up, Torterra was always my absolute favorite. So exciting to see it in competitive play!
Yeah I immediately was drawn to torterra when dp came out. I think it was because of how cool it looked
Squirtle?
@@cygnusy1481 tortoises and turtles are different
@@Shadybornsinneryes... that is why he said squirtle blastoise is a tortoise
@@iancastro1327 he’s a turtle lol turtles prefer water tortoises prefer land lol
Shell Armour with Iron Defence and Amnesia is just nasty.
I like it.
I used a similar set with Hisuian Goodra. Shell Armor with Shelter, Body Press, Life Dew and any other move of your liking, depending on the rest of the team
@@TheJannikku How well did that Goodra set do in this meta?
@@MarkHogan994 well, its typing is nice, only two weaknesses, and a good amount of resistances. I personally see it as a support, it will be bulky and receive no crits, and can heal itself and partners with Life Dew. You may run Leftovers for recovery but I like Rocky Helmet the better. You will force Urshifu to Close Combat you instead of Surging Strikes; you can break Chien-Pao's Focus Sash unless it has Icicle Crash; and Iron Hands will want to Drain Punch you over and over. It's important that you boost your defense first or go for a defensive tera first, otherwise you will fall too soon.
It's good, you just have to think about what slot in your team Goodra is going to replace. I'm not that good of a player so I end up not bringing these kinds of Pokémon that need too much time to get going because I can't handle the situation very well, and end up using the rest of the team and having one dead slot because the meta can be very aggressive doing lots of damage even with not very effective moves
While slower boosting than Swords Dance or Iron Defense, I’m curious if Curse could also work, either with Body Press or if wanting a different move instead? Added benefit in Trick Room?
@@davidbeer5015 It works too but you may have to rely in other physical move rather than Body Press because as it will take many, many more turns to set up, the damage from Body Press will be underwhelming. It's better to take advantage of a move that gets STAB. Remember that Hisuian Goodra's defense is the same as its attack, both base 100, is not that high as to rely on non defense boosted Body Presses.
Another thing to consider is the way you will split your EVs. You probably don't want to focus as much on defense because you want attack, but also if you don't put too much effort into HP you will be weaker taking special attacks
QOTD: Meganium's bulky stat distribution makes it seem like a decent support Pokemon until you see its terrible movepool. Giving Meganium Spore/Follow me could literally make it into a decent support pick for VGC. Justice for Meganium
Was expecting for a shellsmash sweep by Torterra. But this is way cooler as this strategy maximizes Torterra Defensive stats
In game 2, I think they would have been better served not tera-ing the Ogerpon to preserve Mold Breaker. You still get the sun boost, and the stat increase isnt that helpful while the chance of a crit is.
It’s actually terrifying to imagine a Tortoise just ramming it’s entire body, shell and all into anyone.
On that note I do want to see Primarina getting Boomburst or Quaquaval getting Triple Axel
Liquid voice boomburst next to a water absorb user would be nasty
@@pandaman1559Imagine a Storm Drain mon
I think Piplup should have Oblivion Wing... Seems fitting
that umbreon palafin team was really cool, love seeing old reg teams vs new reg teams
This was great. Really made Torterra look like the absolute unit it was meant to be. 💪🏽🐢
I'd buff Iron Punch to a 1.3x boost instead of 1.2x, and then give Infernape Bullet Punch
Considering punch moves are already pretty weak I think it being a 1.3x boost is reasonable enough
@owl8185 yeah and the other abilities for contact all have 1.3 or 1.5, so it's weird that this one got shafted lol
id even say 1.4/1.5x is reasonable, considering the low base power of most punch moves.. strong jaw is a comparable ability but most bite moves are slightly weaker. We also got sharpness this gen which is a 1.5x boost. Slicing moves are already strong, i.e. leaf blade and sacred sword get a crazy buff
@cat8506 I agree tbh. I have to assume that punches having some priority moves was the main reason the ability is weaker
@@cat85061.5 is a choice band and having a built in choice band with priority punch move is pretty stupid. i dont think priority moves should have much strength to them. theres other punching moves but the most common ones are priority
QOTD: Earth Power for Typhlosion. My boi needs some love to carve a good niche beyond Eruption spam to get out of Charizard's shadow.
Did they get rid of gyro ball? I say give it that too with so many new pokemon ridiculously fast
QOTD: Sceptile, being my favorite starter of all time, has a lot of physical coverage for a special attacking mon. Would love for it to have nasty plot or calm mind to boost its special attack further to help with its limited special coverage moves.
Man, I remember all the coolness of seeing in the anime with Leaf Blade. It got the short end of the stick with the physical/special split in the following generation of games.
51:50 I would've considered doing Iron Defense again, so it would go after Haze and sort of balance it, or make Palafin stay buried into hazing instead of attacking.
Can we get a counter of how many times we hear "Man am I glad that I can't get crit" 😂. No hate at all btw. Love your vids ❤
Love the videos as always Aaron! I will say I miss hearing your quick input at the start about your own QOTD please bring back ha ha! Great content as always
I love these sets so fun and refreshing
"if it's a ghost terra in the back it could get a little spooky" Just in time for Halloween!
I took out a team 1v3 with Torterra. HOLYYYYYYY its amazing thanks!
I’d like to see Swampert get an actually useful ability. Swift swim is an obvious choice due to the mega. I’d prefer something a little more interesting, but I don’t have any ideas besides maybe Stamina?
Maybe Guts :D
I’ve been waiting for the next upload, & it’s torterra!!!! Let’s go !!
Saw this one on ladder today. Brutal if you aren't ready for it
Love this Torterra set. My first starter Pokémon ever was a little Turtwig, so it pleases me to see this 'mon have two good niches in VGC. Hope we see an Infernape team soon to conplete the trio of Sinnoh Starters.
QOTD: I'd give Wave Crash to Feraligatr so that it can have a super strong Sheer Force boosted STAB move
James Baek had an episode with a Trick Room Swords Dance Torterra that was neat as well.
How would wave crash get boosted by sheer force, there’s no additional effect?
feraligatr would probably rather use liquidation as its effectivley 110 base power and no recoil also wave crash is not sheer force boosted
Didn't actually get to play Gen 4 because I skipped the DS era and got back into Pokémon when XY came out, but Torterra was always one of my favourite starter Pokémon because of its cool design. Glad to see it get used competitively!
Nice showcase 👌
Was thinking iron defense + amnesia had potential, but couldn't see it working because I thought it was too slow to set up.
You also spend 2 slots on set up; which means u really can't have too much coverage.
but what move does damage based on SPDEF tho
Its not that good, one single ghost and you are screwed
QoTD: Thematically, I think it would be amazing to give all of the starter pokemon (and only the starter pokemon) Hidden Power. But more realistically, give the respective Eeveelutions the Pledge moves. They count. Probably.
0 days lefts of asking for torterra team showcase. day 4 of asking for offensive torterra
Surprised sunny day isn’t on the team to increase synthesis healing, I’m assuming boosting fire attacks is too risky
Yea and it weakens ogerpon and only buffs flutter mane (which practically every team has, so that’s a net 0 benefit). Also it will buff any opposing past paradox mons
Sunny day definitely isn’t worth for just healing
I would give Meganium a new move I made up called Blossoming Veil - it’s Aurora Veil but for the sun instead of of the snow and exclusive to Meganium. And since it already has Leaf Guard it could work out nicely.
Great vid Aaron 👍🏼
I both wish to see Primarina with boomburst and dread the concept(What's the calc on Liquid Voice Terra Water Choice Specs BoomBurst in the rain?)
This is a certified hood classic.
is there any way u could try to make a mamoswine work? loved seeing this torterra set and keep up the good work!
serperior getting draco meteor is my dream, let it really take advantage of contrary
QOTD: Power trip on a speed boost Blaziken could be fun.
17:39 YOU CAN WHAT?!
IMO I prefer protect over synthesis. Synthesis would be the icing on the cake. nice as a fifth move if possible. But u rely so much on building up together with the rest of the team so a protect would buy u important time for screens, parting shots and/ or lunar blessings IMO. Maybe i just suck. Have a beautiful day :D
QotD: I would give Meganium a move like Growth that also boosts speed by 1 stage (2 stages in sun).
Meganium should be part fairy too
Aw man, this reminds me of the Mega Slowbro Stored Power set, practically did the same thing, just using Sp Atk instead
QOTD. Personally really like samurott. With the same hidden ability as torterra I feel like it would not be a stretch to give it shell smash.
just keep that move away from H-samu
Iv always loved these unbreakable wall strategy’s but iv never been able to make them work as well as this
Iron hands is hands down the most insane Pokemon ever so not surprised it survived the double up in first match lol
Delphox should get access to Expanding Force 🦊🔥
“hehehehehe, no crits for you!” - Aaron “Cybertron” Zheng, 2023
I dont know how primarina performed during its release but I definitely want it to get more love cause I love that little thing
I have built my own team in violet and I’ve been playing in ranked but I’m currently 8/8 with only 16 matches played. Not sure I have my numbers right for the stat break downs and the numbers/amounts provided by items like vitamins and feathers etc. How much does each item give to max out stats and such? I want to enjoy and get into competitive more but math is not my strong suit…
YAY MY BOY GETS SOME LOVE ^.^ 🎉
For the QOTD: I had a fun idea for Blastoise; Hunker Down. It gets +2 to both defenses and increases all Special Attack damage by 50%, at the cost of preventing Blastoise from switching out and cutting its speed in Half.
And i know you said only one, but to heck with it. Feraligatr should get Gator Roll, a 70 BP Water type attack with the same effect as Jaw Lock but dealing an extra 1/8th danage for two to three turns. ^.^
aaron, please please please also feature a team with infernape !! then the sinnoh starter trio would be complete 🫶🏼
QOTD: I'd give Serperior Draco Meteor so it has another move to abuse contrary
"I can wicked blow you" 17:35
Ayo???
18:50 it would be synthesizes if you're still wondering Aaron
Would this torterra set still work if you used stockpile and then freed up another moveslot for coverage?
1) Stockpile can only reach +3 boosts, so you put a limit on both your defenses and your max body press damage.
2) It's probably more generally useful to boost the defensive stat you need *this turn* by +2, than to boost both by +1. You already know if you're facing a physical or special attacker (and/or a mostly physical/special enemy team), and can use that info to decide which one to click.
But honestly, there might be some use to replacing Amnesia with a coverage or other supportive move. This is a highly physical meta, which is part of why the Iron Defense is so strong. If only Torterra's special weren't so low - I'm guessing whoever built the team tested this and decided Amnesia was necessary to help wall special attackers.
My first pokemon
Torterra doing its best Registeel impression here :D
Interesting. I was thinking of something similar (running Shell Armor Torterra eith some lind of set up) but am totally skittish about Mold Breaker still allowing mons to crit thru a set up Tort.
I unironically love defensive body press pokemon
Cool team. I will switch amnesia for something else when I create a similar team.
QOTD: A bit more than a new move, but in a few hacks I’ve seen Meganium gain the fairy type and a new ability. I like that idea along with gifting it some more fairy/support moves like follow me/spore/moonblast etc
I'd like to see Sceptile get sharpness instead of unburden and pick up Psycho Cut and Aqua Cutter in the process.
Kinda surprised a two-move setup is viable. I suppose the immunity to crits is the real deciding factor.
Hippowdon can learn stockpile, slack off and body press, right? It could run those moves with extra coverage. Anyone tried that yet?
Amnesia iron defense isn't really "two-move setup" you use whichever you need in the given situation (and then snowball into more setup). You can for example target the special attacker with your other mon and setup iron defense. Or against chien pao dnite then you only need iron defense. Etc. For that reason I think this is better than stockpile.
@@brunolanglais662 I suppose. Just seems like a lot of move slots to use, but if it works it works :D
true@@Nikolaj11
Now you HAVE to do Infernape
Aw cool. For the holloween, the counter for Torterra are Ghosts
I faced this or something similar with the empoleon team, what was I supposed to do? I feel I wasted ages facing this team, it wasn't that productive
43:44 I don't care if he meant to or not, this here is the pun for the season
Drinking game: Take a shot everytime Aaron says "The beautiful thing is that I can't get crit on Torterra"
General question, why not leftovers? If you plan on being on the field for a while and you can’t be crit, wouldn’t it make leftovers a perfect item?
Maybe someone more knowledgeable can weigh in, but I'd say it's about sitrus making it easier to reach your full setup. Leftovers almost certainly would contribute more healing overall during the match, but it's all about the timing and burstiness of the heal. Sitrus basically bails you out of early damage before any defense boosts are up, and replaces one turn of having to click synthesis (meaning you get to click iron defense earlier instead). And having synthesis means you can efficiently heal back up later on, meaning you don't need to worry about chip damage slowly eating away at your boosted mon (which is one of the main uses of leftovers)
@@MG-xn4ug ho ly. This is way beyond my VGC knowledge lol like, I hear you, and I understand what you’re saying. But there is no way I would ever think of this, and my monkey brain just says, “LEFTOVERS GOOD! LEFTOVERS GOOD!”
Hehe, we love the turts
I've been running into these set up teams on showdown a lot. It's usually ninetales with aurora veil, then cresselia spamming lunar blessing + either Kommo-o or Hisuian Goodra for the various defensive stalls. Good to see people will now be doing the same with Torterra. I guess your team will have to have a designated haze, and maybe brick break for screens? It just feels impossible to break since you can't make status conditions, and since trick room gets up from cresselia. Crazy lame in my opinion lol.
18:37 synthesizes?
Why is it bold nature instead of impish?
The Attack stat isn’t used so you want it to be as low as possible for confusion/foul play/strength sap
Would love if meganium came back with triage and swap heal pulse for floral healing.
Can Mold Breaker bypass shell armor and potentially crit with Ivy Cudgel?
Yes.
Hey, haven't people done this before with Shell Armor H-Goodra in the past? I suppose Torterra's benefit is that it also gets Amnesia
Qotd: empoleon gets an ~80 bp spread steel move. Mercury wave or something to fit with it being the only steel/water type.
Primarina with boom burst would be great.
my first instinct was that Leftovers is better than Sitrus (and typically, it would be), but Leftovers basically guarantees you'll get timer stalled in every 1v3 or 1v4 scenario
Seeing a torterra 1v1 a flutter mane was so satisfying.
I would love Sceptile to be more viable with getting Calm Mind or Nasty Plot for special sets (i mean quiver dance would be better but obvious that cant hapoen)
My boy had a decent mega but that gimmick is gone now
Game 1 was a close call. Nicely done
QOTD: Delphox -
Spirit Burn
80BP
Fire
Deals damage against either DEF or SPDEF, whichever is lower.
Or
Arcane Wrath
Psychic
Same as burn up except it's special, user loses psychic typing instead, and ignore spdef boosts.
i like this torkoal i might just use it lol
I would love eruption on charizard!
LET'S GOOOOOOOO
0:14 i come here for this😭😭😭
Shiny Espathra looks awesome
My very first shiny in my life of Pokémon haha well, it started with a shiny Flittle ;p
I think I want Swampert to be better, so I’d like to cheat and give it follow me just because I love the mud boy.
QOTD: giving Serperior either Earth Power or Aura Sphere would be good
Yesssssssssss
"With Gholdengo out I can just Wicked Blow you. "
- Aaron Zheng 2023
Don't mind this set at all. Kind of wish Terra had more coverage though.
43:45 heh, "spooky"
Why the torterra has -attack nature isntead of -Sattack?
The Attack stat isn’t used so you want it to be as low as possible for confusion/foul play/strength sap
I'd give typhlosion extreme speed. Shouldn't be too overpowered since it generally isn't touching it's attack stat.
I was really rooting for the gravity sableye player lol.
Too bad torterra was such a beast
Real cooking would be using a foresigjt mon (if it works how i think it does) to let torterra hit ghost types
I think that Foresight isn’t able to be used in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. Giving Grimmsnarl the Ring Target item and the move Trick would have the same effect, though.
@@allenb9907 trick ring target would be a cool tech
Ah yes, I love me my boy Treesus (tree Jesus)
QOTD: Fell Stinger Meowscarada
Tera the torterra 🐢 ❤
We need 2hr videos. Please give us what we want
AOTD : Idk what move I would give it but it makes me sad that Decidueye kinda sucks when Primarina and Incineroar are great. All 3 starters aren’t that fast but Primarina and Incineroar have great tools to make up for it while Decidueye doesn’t.
