Work introduction:
Boos and whistles mingling with the restrained applause: This is the reaction of the Paris audience to the premiere of Claude Debussy's symphonic sketches "La Mer" on 15 October 1905. Was it a rejection of Debussy's chosen circumstances? For, somewhat scandalously, he had separated from his wife and turned to the banker's wife and singer Emma Bardac. In his composition, he draws rather objective sound sketches of three different sea moods: "De l'aube à midi sur la mer" (From dawn to noon on the sea), "Jeux de vagues" (Play of the waves) and "Dialogue du vent et de la mer" (Dialogue of the wind and the sea). Debussy, a "country bumpkin" by origin, later a convinced city dweller, revealed to his colleague André Messager why he chose this of all subjects: "Perhaps you didn't know that I was destined for the beautiful career of a sailor and that only the coincidences of life led me on a different path. Nevertheless, I have retained a sincere passion for the sea."
As is often the case in compositional processes, Debussy's expressive intentions changed - as can be seen in the original, clearly more concrete movement titles. In the midst of the work, the first movement was to be called: "Mer belle aux îles sanguinaires" (Calm seas off the Îles Sanguinaires). And for the third movement it was intended: "Le vent fait danser la mer" (The wind makes the sea dance).
Debussy began the composition in Bourgogne, far away from waves and sea spray. "Now you will say that the vineyards of Bourgogne are not exactly washed by the ocean! And that the whole thing might well resemble the landscapes painted in the studio! But I have innumerable memories; that is better, in my opinion, than a reality whose charms generally weigh too heavily on the mind." Here Debussy alludes to the habit of Impressionist painters of painting not in the studio but in the open air. It was precisely this immediacy that was extremely important to him in general for his own art. As Debussy himself put it: in "mysterious agreement of nature and imagination".

A beloved piece of French Impressionism . La mer ! Great performance.
Was für Fantastische, romantisch angehauchte Musik, Debussy! ❤Danke tausendmal für die wunderbare Präsentation! 🥀
Gern geschehen!
Schön, dass es Ihnen gefällt 🤗
Beautiful! Third movement felt like I'm inside a "Jaws" movie..
Excellent, Excellent.
❣️
Really well played!
