Work Introduction:
Wagner, the musico-dramatic genius. So much for the official reading. And: Wagner, the composer of sheer endless monologues and dialogues that literally force the audience to take a nap. This is the experience of quite a few opera-goers. In Wagner's masterpieces "Tristan und Isolde" and "Parsifal," musings on interpersonal feelings and philosophical questions gain the upper hand over real phenomena. In none of his operas did he reduce the outer plot in favor of the inner, psychological plot as intensively as in "Tristan." Yet the originals on which this opera is based offer pure action: for example, various battles with a dragon or a giant. Wagner took none of this over. He is concerned with the interpersonal essence, the idealized love between Tristan and Isolde - and with the hope of being able to realize it in the here and now. The realization at the end of the three acts: earthly happiness is impossible, but in the exaggerated utopia the two lovers unite in perfect harmony. This is precisely what the music tells us: no composer before Wagner - and none after him - has understood how to transform longing and suffering for love into music as truly as the Bayreuth master.
The inspiration for this work is as romantic as it is banal: Wagner himself had fallen drearily in love with Mathilde Wesendonck, a witty, graceful and equally wealthy merchant's wife. Despite all hopes for a common happiness, it is basically clear from the beginning of this liaison: it will not be realized in the long run. When Wagner meets his muse, he writes the libretto to "Tristan und Isolde" in one go. As if in a frenzy, he composes the complex score of this opera within two years. As expected, Wagner's relationship with Mathilde ends - but admittedly less tragically and transfigured than the love between Tristan and Isolde in his musical drama. The essence of this fully composed longing for love embraces the work, beginning with the orchestral prelude and finally culminating in "Isolde's Liebestod."

Her name is Marie Jacquot and from 2023/24 on, she will be Principal Guest Conductor of the Wiener Symphoniker. In August 2024, she will also take on the post of Principal Conductor of the Royal Danish Theatre Copenhagen 😊

A fine conductor at the start of, I hope, a brilliant career. It must be said that the Prelude and Liebestod are pretty well “conductorproof” . All the conductor has to do is keep the players together and let the music flow, as it does here.

Brava, Marie. The only rendition of this I’ve ever heard was conducted by Leopold Stokowski with the Philadelphia Orchestra in the 1960 Columbia Masterworks recording. Yours is as good, if not better. Thank you for sharing your brilliant talent. ⭐️

Die Musik ist genial - aber mit dem "Voraus-Dirigieren" käme ich nicht klar ....
Jein, ist für viele Leute die in normalen Sinfonieorchestern spielen ungewöhnlich, aber ist ja Standart in der Oper. Gewöhnungssache!
Ja, Gewöhnungssache, auf jeden Fall. In einem Interview mit dem BR verriet Maestra Jacquot kürzlich über das Symphonieorchester des BR: "Sie haben einen wahnsinnig tollen, wunderschönen, tiefen Klang, was am Anfang etwas ungewohnt ist, weil sie sehr spät nach dem Schlag spielen. Aber ich liebe das, und ich freue mich, wenn das passiert..." Was wohl bedeutet, dass sie es als Dirigentin eben nicht provoziert! Insofern sollte man eher von "nacheilendem Spiel" des Orchesters als von "Vorausdirigat" sprechen. Das geht immer vom Orchester aus, denn das Orchester muss ungemein geschlossen agieren, und das erfordert viel Übung und Erfahrung im gemeinsamen Musizieren. Natürlich ist die verzögerte Spielweise abhängig vom Stück und passt bevorzugt in ausdrucksvollen Passagen, bei denen die Klangentwicklung und das Espressivo im Vordergrund stehen.

@@gstorrentenaja, das orchester spielt aber nicht nur nach dem schlag, sondern teilweise schlichtweg wesentlich langsamer als sie dirigiert (gott sei dank, es ist ja so schon maßlos übereilt. Da schmachtet nix); im takt vor dem ersten großen tritonusvorhalt dirigiert sie ca 8 schläge. Im 6/8 takt.
@@zalba5710Nix da mit "ca. 8 Schlägen" 😀 - schulmäßiger als hier von Mme Jacquot vorgeführt, lässt sich ein 6/8-Takt kaum schlagen! Es ist alles da: leichter Auftakt, die schwere 1 und 4 und eine unmissverständliche 1 zum Vorhalt vor der Auflösung des Tristanakkords. Die folgende GP verkürzt sie erkennbar gewollt, das ist ebenso legitim wie agogisch klar angezeigt. Dann wechselt leider die Kamera. Das WDR SO ist ja kein x-beliebiges Provinzorchester, daher gelingt das Zusammenspiel nicht zufällig perfekt. Selbstverständlich ist das Stück geprobt worden, und die Dirigentin würde mimisch wie gestisch gewiss anders agieren, wenn es auseinanderzufallen drohte. Zum Zeitpunkt der Aufführung war M. Jacquot erst 32 Jahre jung und verfügte dennoch bereits über 3 Jahre Erfahrung als Opernchefin!
Vermeintlich "falsche" Tempi sind zuallermeist auf eigene Hörgewohnheiten zurückzuführen! Zu Wagners Tempovorstellungen empfehle ich den aufschlussreichen Artikel von Hartmut Haenchen über Tempi im "Ring des Nibelungen" in den verschiedenen Traditionslinien von der UA bis heute. Die dort gewonnenen Erkenntnisse lassen sich auch auf den Tristan übertragen.
I find interesting how prog female conductors are usually hard from start to finish, while men tend to catch the curves and flow with easy when needed. But there are some rare very feminine conductors with this quality
Why are you even getting gender into this? Every conductor has their own interpretation.

It's great that there are now quotas for female conductors, no matter how well she can conduct, whether she used to be a tennis player, and has recently entered the field of music. We also need quotas for transgender conductors! As for men, they should be sent away; the era of male conductors is over, and the law is on the side of women. And try saying something about it, men, you will be shamefully dismissed. Exist quietly; skills don't matter; quotas are what matters!
