The new doors are nice, but any idea of when the first Tangara with the tech upgrade will roll out? The Tangaras are my favorite in the fleet btw. Of course they've picked up a bit of dirt and wear and tear over the years and the Waratahs feel a bit nicer being how much newer they are, but when you consider that the Tangaras were introduced almost 30 years ago, the fact that they still look and feel completely modern after just a few refurbishments and ride very smoothly is quite an accomplishment. The curved windows on the top deck makes the carriage feel nice and airy too. When the Tangaras do eventually get replaced I hope their replacements will be more of an update of their design. Can't wait for the tech upgrade!
timtam53191 They’re planning to upgrade the existing Tangara fleet so that they don’t have to order new trains, because despite being older than M, H, A and B sets, the T sets still hold up very well, and the planned upgrades are to help ensure the longevity of the T sets. This is also considering that the main T4 suburban services only use T sets because it is easier to use just one set type on the line.
I like the look of the new doors, but if your at an Underground T4 line station, if you have the old doors on a Tangara when coming through a station like those, it looks more like a subway train, (since trains there can arrive and depart quickly). If you have the new doors which "smile", they don't look too much like subway trains, even when arriving and departing quickly.
+trainsandtech I wish they just changed the ExG sets to the new doors, since you get a smoother ride on those, but left the suburban T sets to the old doors to get a resemblance of the old trains that they are, since they don't have as good seats and no luggage racks.
Looks like they still have the same vulnerability in that they are not supported at the bottom centre when closed, so a good kick there may well bend them, allowing passengers to escape. Perhaps just as well, since the original considered decision to fit a door release mechanism with no driver override was changed by someone without further consultation to allow the driver to prevent the doors from opening. This creates a number of risks. First, there's clearly going to be a delay before the doors open, to allow the driver to decide to override. Secondly, the driver may override because he or she doesn't understand the passenger's need to escape. Thirdly, in a significant accident, the additional complexity of the system may cause the door release to fail when it's most needed.
+Tanki Divide I was thinking of doing a big doors compilation featuring doors opening and closing inside and outside each type of train. Not including Endeavours, Xplorers and XPT's
Yeah, still lots of the Mortdale tangara's have the original doors, and a few of the Hornsby tangara's. I reckon those with the original doors closing announcements will be awesome with the new doors +Sydney Trains Vlogs, don't you think, a contrast of the old and new, I've even heard that T89 has had a doors closing tone change, it's gone back to the original tone, I noticed this a few weeks back

Terahui Wineera They were common on pretty much every major suburban line until Waratahs took over. These days, Tangaras are mostly limited to the North Shore, Western, Northern and Eastern Suburbs/Illawarra lines. The latter in particular is where they are very common, as they are the only suburban fleet to use that line.
i cant believe one of the reasons for replacing the doors on the tangaras was because people could kick the steel plate at the bottem of the doors off.......WOW :^/
Are Tangara trains unique to Sydney? or should I ask are all Sydney trains unique to Sydney? does the government give a list of needs to the manufacturer and they custom design a set of trains for the city?
They did use the Tangara double decker trains in Melbourne for a short stint in the 1990’s , but removed them from service eventually ( I don’t know why).
Steven Bai I remember the line before conversion, there is only one railroad switch which helps the train terminate on Platform 5 and Not on 6. A metro train can’t return to the city from Platform 6 as there is no railroad switchtrack
TransportofNSWBus T52 had its tone changed to that older voice as well a few weeks ago. Other sets I’m aware of that have this voice are T74, T5, T100 and T107.
Sydney Transport Films They do look much better in conjunction with the interior refurbishment. And yes, the hydraulic mechanism on the upgraded doors is more smoother than the original doors.
Tangaras seems to have two door systems, sounding different from the other. First one: 1:46, 2:21, 2:55 Second one: 4:48, 5:05, 5:22 But I've heard both sounds, on both old AND new doors, although in this video, the old doors use the first one, and the new doors use the second one :/
Terahui Wineera I believe there’s 111 currently existing. One is currently being trialled for proposed technology upgrades that will later get approved for the others.
GazzaOak As far as I’m aware, they use two different “Doors closing, please stand clear” voices. Depends on set number though, as some have the deeper voice and some have the other voice.
Glen’s Transport Vlogs G set carriage numbers were numbered from OD6801 to OD6841, ON5801 to ON5820, and ONL5851 to ONL5870. Cars OD6831, ON5816, ONL5866 and OD6832 are the only known ones to have been scrapped as far as I’m aware, as those four cars belonged to G7, from the infamous 2003 Waterfall crash.
+Phillip160 Wouldn't it be because the old ones have not had their pneumatic (or air) door systems adjusted for a long time? Which leads to some opening and closing very fast and with force, and others, doing it every so slowly. Once they fit the new doors, they probably re-adjust the air pressure. Also, the new doors are lighter = less momentum. This is just my assumption ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Phillip160 The new “M Set” doors also don’t hang as much when opened, which was a huge flaw of the original doors. Also shows just how much lighter the upgraded doors are.
Anything Is Possible! They’re not exactly the same as the doors on the M sets, as the doors on a Tangara use a different door mechanism. These newer Tangara doors had to be custom made as they specifically use a “plug door” hydraulic system. The doors have however earned the nickname “M set style” doors due to the heavy resemblance, notably the windows’ curved shape at the bottom.

100% agree with you mate!
They began Tangara rollouts in 1988 as part of a BiCentennial Project. So, they have been around longer if the originals are still operational.
The reason why the tangaras got new doors, was to stop people from kicking the panels on the old doors.
