The beautiful majestic dame of Flinders street station will still be here long after us. Much history and many memories for me. I'm from Melbourne Australia. 😊👍🍻
The station is badly in need of a renovation. The narrow entrances/exits to the platforms were meant to be redone ages ago and there's big areas abandoned that could be used to take stress off of the main platforms
using the werribee line everyday it isnt that bad and keep in mind werribe is one of the worst lines ever, delays are at max 10-20 mins and replacement buses happen twice a year
I love Melbourne probably more than my hometown. Sydney behaves bit of too formal and unnecessarily fast . Melbourne is Cooler the people are amazing here they generally live with less worry sometimes they do not worry at all.Even City people as well. Thats what I love about here the most. I have worked as a night shift taxi driver for 4 years and I call them the best 4years of my life . Sorry I compared to Sydney only because I haven't been anywhere alse that much.
Hilarious intro! Actually worked for two of the railroads featured in the intro - LIRR and NJT. Arguably two of the busiest in the U.S. Where one minor hiccup can cause major backups, inconveniences to so many.
I wonder when this was filmed? I lived in Melbourne most of the last four years and the Pakenham/Cranbourne line was my local - unfortunately we've had line works on and off for all that time and train-replacement busses so "This would have been the first week back on trains since December" means almost nothing.
To be fair, the person is obviously a migrant who hasn't had time to learn our culture and understand what things are important to us. I'm sure that they will be more in touch with in a few years time.
Lol so strange hearing Flinders Street called one of the world’s busiest stations. Every time I travel to the northern hemisphere I’m reminded we have rush hour fucking lucky, and ponder whether Thanos had a point about the snap lol. Don’t get me wrong, it’s busy.. but it’s like sane busy. So many stations in Europe, America, Asia it’s like they’re trying to evacuate the city before the zombies arrive every single day
I swear I thought Sydney was more busy? I went to flinders st station and it was Lowkey empty. Central station is always busy no matter the time of day. I’m confused
the incident where the person was hit by the train occurred at my local station 😔 I actually got caught up in that and had to take the mernda line 😳 it was bittersweet to see a place that I go every day on worldwide tv...
I must say as an Aussie, we treat people decently and commuters act responsibly. That’s why Melbourne has been voted most liveable city so many times. I speak as an ex Londoner and ex Melbournian, now living in Brisvegas
Londoner here. Melbourne's ok, but London is a kangaroo to jersey cow comparison, and Brisbane. Good grief- Geordie Shore looks more pleasant with far less methed up concreters aggressively driving their utes.
@@markiobook8639where did they compare London and Melbourne? Their point was that the common person has respect for each-other. The fact you found and took some sort of insult from the comment shows your fragility and self importance. On that note and to join in with you…. London is a hellhole.
Flinders is not even busy and yet it is pretty inefficient. A real busy station is something like the Osaka-Umeda station or Shinjuku station in Tokyo.
I can see my apartment in the shots around flinders station. It’s so interesting how things are unfolding behind the scene. I want to be a train driver. It’s my dream.
This was interesting and things have certainly changed from my days working for VicRail, The PTC, The Met, and VLine, in the 80's and 90's. Back then we said they needed a 3rd line on the Pakenham line instead of the Frankston line. Why it hasn't been installed is beyond me.
People getting struck by trains happens quite a lot on the Eltham/Hurstbridge line. I'm sure it happens on every other line too. Please people, get help if you need it. Also, be kind
Town Hall station in Sydney would have to be up there in the busiest per square metre/platform etc considering its size Only 6 platforms, across two levels but during peak it's one of the most densely packed stations in Australia
They have the biggest most spacious interior space too. It is simply the best we got. Sad X'Trapolis 2.0 is an evolution of the smaller X'Trapolis 100. Siemens 2.0 would of been the luxury approach.
That is her. She was recently let go by Metro. Taking sickies and going to various protests around Melbourne, and being seen on TV, while you're off sick, is not very smart, but we learnt that on Q&A.
@InFidelCastro No Flinders Street has been the busiest station in the southern hemisphere since 1858 and still is. The Melbourne metro is bigger than sydney's with 18 lines and has more trains running on it. Sydney has less trains however those trains carry more passengers. Melbourne is also larger in area than sydney, has been since 1852.
@InFidelCastro Wrong! Melbourne has more passengers using trains than sydney and Melbourne has more trains running. Sydneys trains carry more passengers per train though. Sydney has 14 lines whereas Melbourne has 18 lines.
what country is that? as an immigrant in Australia, I can tell you this: it depends if the crowd has been drinking or not. Adults here are either polite and reserved, or bat shit crazy and violent if they drank.
I travelled regularly from 1970 till 1988, the old red and blue trains were great during the summer, doors open, windows down, enter the silver hot boxes, auto door close and windows that would partially open, great to travel in on a 40 degree day. Not
*I live in Sydney and Sydney trains are all double decker meaning it can take twice as much so congestion in stations doesn’t occur as easy as Melbourne*
FYI - Shinjuku Station is actually the "world's busiest railway station" with an average of 3.5 million passing through its doors every day (compared to Flinder Street station of approx 110,000 per day) :)
I live in the US but I have family who work in Melbourne. I have been on this train many times and through Flinders Station on the way to Melbourne Museum, where I volunteer. I do remember the unfortunate suicide that happened on the Hurstbridge and I was one of those affected when we had to get off of the train and board busses to Heidelberg. Oh my, what a mess that was. I feel sorry for the unfortunate person who chose to take her life.
Hi Don, yeah that happens in every city here in Australia. I was living in Adelaide in 1995 when a friend who was going to school one morning was sitting in the car with his dad waiting for a train to pass by when a schoolgirl listening to her ipod didn't see the train coming, crossed the train tracks and was sliced in half. I feel sorry for people who live in underpriviledged cities like Adelaide & sydney who take their lives this way, which is understandable as who would want to live in dirty boring places like those! Go Melbourne, Go the Vics!
safly, the incident response people become desensitised. Ive been on active duty, then worked as a village cop- saw plenty of maimed bodies. I was actually in traffic when someone either ignored the gates or was deaf or drug affected (I never found out) and ten cars behind I saw the red mist of the impact. A lot of great people did their best to hide the remains till more copd could come. Very nasty. Poor van man who got front row seat + human debtis was treated for shock, lorry driver opposite had seen it all before. Tragic. The worst is telling the family.
I miss Melbourne. Ionly live in adelaide because my elderly mother is here. Melbourne has it all. great jobs, great rental properties, great events, great transport, awesome food, music, art, sports, universities, parks and gardens. No other city south of the equator comes close to it!

@@darylcheshire1618 Platform 10 East? never heard of it. I remember platforms 10 & 11 were for Sandringham, St Kilda & Port Melbourne trains in the 70s & 80s. I love and miss Melbourne - such a beautiful city 💜
Amazing pre covid days. I use to live in Broadmeadows and Watsonia and used the Met often. Would travel to rual Victoria as well on the V-line so this is interesting to watch. Thankyou.
15:20 that's Jeroen, who is currently the, uh, covid response commander, I think
Yeah it’s weird seeing him in such a contrasting environment
Kicked out of the train job, but government needs a con artist talker to avoid issues. Standard Dan Andrews approach that sucks do many in.
This is beautiful, cheers from Sydney ❤️🤙
The beautiful majestic dame of Flinders street station will still be here long after us.
Much history and many memories for me.
I'm from Melbourne Australia.
😊👍🍻
I miss Flinders so much tbh, used to go there everyday bc I commute to school and I'm glad that I got the chance
Where the upstairs grand ballroom has been left empty and derelict for decades......
The station is badly in need of a renovation. The narrow entrances/exits to the platforms were meant to be redone ages ago and there's big areas abandoned that could be used to take stress off of the main platforms
They are doing it now, at least the underpasses.
I used to meet people "under the clocks".
And I thought Sydney trains were bad. I'm feeling lucky now
Brisbane is great
Buz town
Having used both Sydney and Melbourne trains I would definitely say Melbourne has fewer interruptions. I think these were just caught on bad days.
using the werribee line everyday it isnt that bad and keep in mind werribe is one of the worst lines ever, delays are at max 10-20 mins and replacement buses happen twice a year
Yo its Leo, we have don’t have that much trouble also love your videos
When it’s hot the train stops. You think they would prepare for the heat by now 😂
Great radio mate of mine, Pete Holden "holdin' " his own in this role. perfect for him, really.
I wonder when this was filmed? I lived in Melbourne most of the last four years and the Pakenham/Cranbourne line was my local - unfortunately we've had line works on and off for all that time and train-replacement busses so "This would have been the first week back on trains since December" means almost nothing.
January 2019.
It's not hard to work out when it was made. The end credits say Copyright 2019 and the Australian Open tennis is on in January.
the man at risk of suicide was probably fed up with years of delays
Each life in Melbourne is so connected to Flinders Station
I literally don't know why daily commuters get mad at staff like this wasn't their fault calm down hun
That rover chick is from the Jordan Peterson qanda lol
Her voice instantly sent shivers down me jimmies
hahahaha! i just spotted that too
wtf is the Melbourne central cricket ground???
@Random Number its the MCG Melbourne Cricket Ground......no such thing as the melbourne central cricket ground
To be fair, the person is obviously a migrant who hasn't had time to learn our culture and understand what things are important to us. I'm sure that they will be more in touch with in a few years time.
“In the ladies’ room, there’s still no movement” 💩 don’t think that slipped by me
😂😂😂
So weird how packed it was pre-covid
Lol so strange hearing Flinders Street called one of the world’s busiest stations. Every time I travel to the northern hemisphere I’m reminded we have rush hour fucking lucky, and ponder whether Thanos had a point about the snap lol.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s busy.. but it’s like sane busy. So many stations in Europe, America, Asia it’s like they’re trying to evacuate the city before the zombies arrive every single day
Never been on a Mumbai local, I see😛
I swear I thought Sydney was more busy? I went to flinders st station and it was Lowkey empty. Central station is always busy no matter the time of day. I’m confused
its really work hour dependent and covid fucked it, going to the city at 7-8 in the morning on weekdays most trains are full people packed
Central Station in Sydney is definitely busy but this is for a UK audience so they can make up any old stuff they like.
central is busier
the incident where the person was hit by the train occurred at my local station 😔 I actually got caught up in that and had to take the mernda line 😳 it was bittersweet to see a place that I go every day on worldwide tv...
@Random Number in Sydney they report fatality at station, so everyone knows and is maybe a little more empathetic
I must say as an Aussie, we treat people decently and commuters act responsibly. That’s why Melbourne has been voted most liveable city so many times. I speak as an ex Londoner and ex Melbournian, now living in Brisvegas
I wish that was true
Ooh bless them, such hard workers 💜
This was interesting and things have certainly changed from my days working for VicRail, The PTC, The Met, and VLine, in the 80's and 90's.
Back then we said they needed a 3rd line on the Pakenham line instead of the Frankston line. Why it hasn't been installed is beyond me.
Lack of space on the rail corridor after Huntingdale and Oakleigh, and runs through some of the most expensive real estate in Melbourne.
simple $$$$¥
People getting struck by trains happens quite a lot on the Eltham/Hurstbridge line. I'm sure it happens on every other line too. Please people, get help if you need it. Also, be kind
You should see Sydney when a train is one hour late and they have to drag a 16 carriage train to an over flowing platform
Fun fact for the day, regional trains aren’t actually considered late unless they’re 5 hours behind schedule (in nsw anyway(i think))
“Melbourne central cricket ground “ yeah nice

Town Hall station in Sydney would have to be up there in the busiest per square metre/platform etc considering its size
Only 6 platforms, across two levels but during peak it's one of the most densely packed stations in Australia
Are we not gonna talk about what’s in the bottom left corner at 41:21 😳😅
Siemens rolling stock is superb, offering us comfortable train rides all of the time👍
So comfortable they never stop xD
They have the biggest most spacious interior space too. It is simply the best we got. Sad X'Trapolis 2.0 is an evolution of the smaller X'Trapolis 100. Siemens 2.0 would of been the luxury approach.
I love Flinders Street Station
“Melbourne central cricket ground” lol

I miss busy carefree Melbourne.
Is that the same person at 3.15 mouthing off at Jordan Peterson on Q&A
That is her. She was recently let go by Metro. Taking sickies and going to various protests around Melbourne, and being seen on TV, while you're off sick, is not very smart, but we learnt that on Q&A.
Yes it is.
OMG this just made my day/night.
It is 1 million percent her. Way too funny
Thanks for a very interesting video. Any chance Subtitles for the conversations being added? I am deaf, sorry.
Is flinders really more busy then southern cross?
@InFidelCastro stats?
I'm surprised Flinders Street made the cut.
It would be close!
The greatest station staff team on Earth

Like so many travelling on public transport and in the CBD.
this seems like a heavily censored version of the day to day life around melbournes train lines
"Please be aware that due to a person being struck by a train--"
Not again
I love travelling from the city. Especially when you get thrown off at Richmond to make up for their late train numbers.
its not the Worlds Busiest Train Station. but it is for melbourne
12:49 In my country they'd probably activate the riot police (to maintain order among the expected large crowds waiting for replacement buses)
what country is that? as an immigrant in Australia, I can tell you this: it depends if the crowd has been drinking or not. Adults here are either polite and reserved, or bat shit crazy and violent if they drank.
@@TheGKFront Ah I'm from Singapore
I travelled regularly from 1970 till 1988, the old red and blue trains were great during the summer, doors open, windows down, enter the silver hot boxes, auto door close and windows that would partially open, great to travel in on a 40 degree day. Not
Yes the good old Hitachi trains.
@@raspanda8123 I was born in 82 and I was lucky enough to see the good old red rattlers
100% agreed. Red rattlers and Harris trains were great. The Comengs (1983) were great too. Dont like these newer trains, they are ugly!
*I live in Sydney and Sydney trains are all double decker meaning it can take twice as much so congestion in stations doesn’t occur as easy as Melbourne*
Very interesting documentary.
FYI - Shinjuku Station is actually the "world's busiest railway station" with an average of 3.5 million passing through its doors every day (compared to Flinder Street station of approx 110,000 per day) :)
Nice! Flinders St is not the busiest in the world, its actually the busiest in Australia
@@markiobook8639 This is why they have spent billions removing crossings, either with a trench or the sky rail. Incidents like this are much rarer.
Yes this place deserved this video!
Ahh Melbourne - Jewel of the Southern Hemisphere...I miss the vibrancy and dynamic life we had before 'Rona...
Before what?
It certainly is the jewel of the Southern Hemisphere. It is also the birthplace of our nation in 1901.

Greg, Melbourne is back, bigger and better than ever whereas Shitney and adelaide are still dirty shitholes.
I miss Melbourne. Ionly live in adelaide because my elderly mother is here. Melbourne has it all. great jobs, great rental properties, great events, great transport, awesome food, music, art, sports, universities, parks and gardens. No other city south of the equator comes close to it!

once a fault brought down the complex web of overhead lines between platforms 1 & 2 at 6am meaning the Clifton Hill and Camberwell lines were blocked until mid afternoon.
Whats platform 1 & 2 got to do with Camberwell lines? I thought 1 & 2 were Mernda & Hurstbridge?
@@jacintaedwards1123 Wasn't Mernda in those days, the VR ran trains to Camberwell and beyond from platforms 1-4. One work collegue complained that his train from Burwood ended up at platform 10 East and he had a longer walk to the Flinders Street exit.
@@darylcheshire1618 Platform 10 East? never heard of it. I remember platforms 10 & 11 were for Sandringham, St Kilda & Port Melbourne trains in the 70s & 80s. Platform 1 used to cater for regional trains to Bairnsdale and Yarram for along time. Then when Princes Bridge closed platform was used for Epping & Hurstbridge.
In the 80s when I got trains from Flinders Street it was usually platforms 4 & 5 for Glen Waverley & Alamein lines.
@@jacintaedwards1123 Platform 10 East is what is platform 12 now. In the '70s that end of the platform was used less. Sandringham trains came up to the middle of platform 10.
I used to board the Yarram train from Platform 1 on the Princes Bridge side, I forget what number it was but it was an extension of platform 1. The Korrumburra refresh was closed so I would buy a cooked chicken in Swanston St and walk to Princes Bridge and board the train, it departed at 6:08 pm from memory.
@@darylcheshire1618 Yeah that Yarram part sounds right, Bairnsdale trains departed from there also. But I never saw any signs at Flinders st saying platform 12? I know they often had a Sandringham and a St Kilda/Port train behind each other on 10.
