Overath is one of the best playmakers ever. One of the most underrated playmakers and midfielders.
Germany are painted by the media as workaholics and average technique.
But this nation has had plenty of technical playmakers like Netzer Schuster Flöhe Möller and Haßler; Özil/Kroos recently.
Germany will always have playmakers and no.10s

I think in 1970s Germany were recognized as team full of flair players. as almost every NT had flair players all over the pitch in that era of flair football. In the book Tor! about german football they mentioned that media called Germany of early 70s as football of year 2000. but yeah strange stereotype (workman-like or machine-like) still persists in media even after reign of Germany of 2010s with their focus on attractive and technical football (with players like Kroos, Ozil, Reus, Goetze, Lahm, Hummels, Gundogan - all skillful and capable at playmaking).

@@robertwill23 Exactly. Germany even from the 30s always had one midfielder that controlled tempo and played amazing passes. Especially between the 70s-90s Germany we’re blessed with technical midfielders and playmaking sweepers.

Wolfgang Overath is one of underrated player ever. He took Gunter Netzer in bench. Overath soon regained his place ahead of Netzer, due to the latter's now being injured. Netzer himself said that Overath "was born to play for Germany". A dicipline, talented & tactically player, Overath was known for his passing ability, technique and outstanding left foot. A World Cup specialist, he won 1974 WC, 3rd 1970 WC, Runner up 1966 WC. Entered on 1974 WC Best XI. A Legend.

Grande jogador. Homem de um só clube, FCKoln. O teu trabalho é de grande valor para que estas lendas não caiam no esquecimento e para as novas gerações pensarem que o futebol só existe com o CR7 e com o Messi.

I saw him after his career at a game with older professional Stars against best player of county dithmarsha . He was 43 years old and he held the ball so close to his feet that no one was able to take the ball away from him. He made a great show for us , having still a great speed. I was impressed to see his fitness at that age. He liked to play football in private until the age of 80. Football was his life he told on tv.

When the swedish right winger, Roger Magnusson, came to Cologne on loan from Juventus in 1966/67 he was an instant hit and awoke the jealousy of Overath. The latter stopped giving Roger Magnusson any passes and Magnusson was happy to join the french club Olympique Marseille where he became one of their greatest players ever. Still, I think Overath was fantastic and also his younger team mate, Heinz Flohe.
