Harvey Duncan I just bought a 5 speed 02 Toyota Echo last week and Ive watched a ton of your videos. So Thank you. But I have a question where did you get your center concole from?
Someone modified some sort of metal cup used on airplanes for theirs to close the gap a bit, since the ball is smaller than the socket by a good amount. Pretty much comes to pay more and risk the same issue with the TWM shifter, or do this. I haven't heard much about the TWM in this platform.
So if I order the trd quickshift kit for the scion xa it should be universal to fit the 2001 toyota echo correct?.... I can't find the trd kit specifically for the echo anywhere. Just need to know if it is something that I can get for another make and model but fit my echo. Thanks .
It should, yes. The oddest difference seems to be very minor width changes in the lever. Trying to fit a Scion shift boot with the chrome neck to an Echo lever, the Echo is too thick.
Just watching the video to try and improve some of the slack without having to go underneath the car, but honestly even if one wants to keep the originality, the throw is very long and obviously it gets worse with time.
The height is long, the throw itself, with the right adjustment (this was only the initial trial) can be improved. The shifter can only drop so much before it gets to the bottom of the car. It's possible to raise the entire housing, but then the front of the shifter cradle is lifting the cupholders/center console out of place.
Nope. Just a quick search shows your car is closer to the Caldina. Your best bet is to dig deep into what your car shares its platform and powertrain with.
+Cody Reeves Craigslist find of Scion xA parts. They were ridiculously cheap compared to the norm. They usually go for $90-$150 depending on the seller. This guy was selling spares for their xA rebuild for another car, and just needed room in the garage. There are a couple minor things that don't match up, like the sensors for the passenger seatbelt light, and the seatbelt buckles need to be carried over the from Echo. Otherwise, they bolt right in and even share frames. Let me keep the slide feature into the backseat. ruclips.net/video/xq8ELXCoHW4/видео.html They're definitely more firm and supportive compared to OE Echo seats. They're pretty much what the Canadian and Japanese RS hatches received. I also grabbed the center console and handbrake handle. Just livens it up a smidge, though some of the later models had some slightly nicer trim (little things like chrome handbrake button, trim ring around a knob-flushed shift boot, etc).
Ralco RZ, but to be honest I don't really suggest it. It tends to loosen up over time, so I had to tighten up the adjustable parts as they loosened up it ruin the shift feel and even came off so I couldn't shift. The design also means you have to take part that shift housing which compromises the fitment. I think finding a TRD housing for a Scion XA would be a better bet.they're a little bit rare now and more expensive but it might be worth the money. Right now I'm back to stock.
Hey man, just came across your channel couple days ago; also just got an 05 Echo hatch. I'm wondering if you can shed light on wither an eBay short-shifter kit for a xA would just drop right into the stock echo's shift box? You said in the video you had xA stuff just as a replacement, I assume in that it's as with most front-end mechanical stuff and it's all interchangeable, and in that exactly the same? Can you link me to what you've installed here by chance? Cheers, I'm just getting into these cars and am hardly acquainted; still got making a ToyotaNation account ahead of me even. :P Subbed, love your car, I'm for sure seeking xA interior bits but I'm in Ontario Canada so they're quite a rarity here.
It's hard to tell without seeing the Ebay short-throw. Technically it should. I've been using a Ralco RZ brand, which has gone up in price substantially since I bought mine... or at least it feels like it has (would have remembered spending close to $100 on it). As long as it's an xA or 2007-and-down xB you'd be fine. I tend to look through Google Shopping to see what shows up for the Scions and go from there for pricing. Be wary about the short-throws, as most owners have trouble getting reverse when it's cold, and the shifts are particularly difficult to get when cold. Have to let the transmission warm up a bit longer. Another thing about the Ralco RZ and designs like it, the ends where it attaches to the cables do loosen up and need to be tightened once in a while. If they aren't tightened, the shifter will get increasingly notchy, loose, and eventually you'll loose the ability because the threads will come out and need to be put back.
Ah, awesome man thanks for the reply your knowledge is a real help for me at this point, the only short throw I've come across I'd be interested in is the one you have here, came across it on ebay last night (www.ebay.ca/itm/302305904221) and yeah, it's pretty up there at about 120 Canadian pesos. May hold off a bit but good to know, especially about the cold/reverse. I may pop up here and there in your channel with random questions or searching for clarification. Try and keep it mostly to gathering knowledge from forum posts and the like, but nothing more re-assuring than hearing it from someone you can see it actually having worked for. Thanks again!
That's fine. Just know it can also graze the floor and shifter base if it's too low. Things can be a pain with it, but shorter throws are nice. I'm not sure the feel is much better, though. Stock isn't super sharp, but it's not really bad for the class, either.
That doesn't change the throw as efficiently. Now you have to reach farther. But yeah, it'd be easier. I intend on replacing eith the full TRD housing they sell for the xA and xB.

Scion xa, hope that helps lol
I wonder if they make aluminum boots so you can get a more solid linkage instead of that crappy white plastic.

The silver base (with the red detail) for the shift boot. where can i find it?
Scion xA center console, but the red was just red tape I added.
