Greatly informative. Superbly explained. Im sure all long time brass players can breath a little better knowing this can be done to repair their loved instrument.
this is awesome, except the damn tools are super expensive to buy all for causal repairs.. Wish I had them all! The Ferree store is like a musical instrument tool candy store! Love it!
Mine is in the shop for this exact thing (only worse) right now, among other repairs. They called and said it was done, but talking to the guy I quickly figured out they didn't get the dents out of the tuning slide. I kinda understand why... but after watching this... kinda seems like he just didn't want to. I think he's giving it another go.
In theory, it can make a difference in the sound, but unless the dent is large, it would be hard to tell a difference just by playing it. It does look ugly though.
You can use the same method shown in this video if the tool will fit around the smaller radius. If not, you may need to unsolder the crook and remove the dent with mandrels.

Nice vid. Suggestion: If you slip a leather glove on, you won't have to worry about getting your hand / skin pinched. Keep up the good work!

can a dent there hurt the instrument?

How do you remove dents from dual radius crooks?
