You are probably right because there is a valve that opens when you use the water dispenser but there might be a little residual pressure in the system so have a towel handy. It is a good idea though to have a shut off for your water supply line to the fridge in case it breaks. I have one easily accessible right in back of the fridge so I turned it off.
The new GE MWF water filter I purchased does not go up far enough to attach. The hole in the center of the filter is not as big around as the previous one and simply will not go up far enough. I even took off the "housing" to view it. Why did they change the size of the center hole? I am using the filter recommended for my GE refrigerator, but it does not fit.
I just installed a new filter 4 months ago and my fridge must be going on 20 years old now. I bought it off of amazon. Are you sure you purchased the correct filter for your model number of fridge?
You DO NOT need to turn off your water supply before changing the refrigerator water filter.

With my fridge you press the water button for 3 sec to reset the light and timer.
