I just heard about it and posted it above as I didn't see your post. About 10 years ago I remember she performed at a Brooklyn street fair and after that Googling her and checking her website to see if she would appear again and never found anything. RIP
NOOOOO 😢😢😢 this is how I find out 🥺 May she rest in peace! Her vocals and stage presence has always stuck with me over a decade ago when I stumbled upon their song and group 😢
Yeah Baby. It was 1965. I was 13 and Mary the lead singer was 16 (or 17). And I was so IN LOVE with her. I dreamt of her giving me, that Great Big Kiss. I think Mary was one of my first real crushes. When the Shangri-La's were on Shindig, it was time stopped. All that existed was me and Mary Weiss. Oh Boy!
it's nice to know the shangri-las were remembered. I was 12 in 65, and Met all of them at a performance. I was in love with Maryann Ganser in 63 when I was 10 and she was 15. She came to my house with my babysitter a few times. She died in 70. Still think about her today... Liked your comment.
I also want to say I love the facial expressions Mary makes in this performance. I love the way she looks up to say he's tall, and the expression she uses to tell the girls that he's not all that bad. Let's face it, I like everything about Mary Weiss.
I heard a recent version of her singing remember (walking in the sand) and I'm sorry but it was AWFUL it was like she was trying to sound like a man, and her choices of glasses frames do not suit her. I gey she's old now but she's totally forcing the deep voice and there are many other styles of glasses frames that could look good on her
Why do people always say punk before punk existed as though 70s punk was something to aspire to.In the UK,three good bands and a load of crap more like.Biggest regress ever
@@randybackgammon890 What about Buzzcocks, Wire, Devo, Joy Division, Misfits, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Public Image Ltd, The Damned, Bauhaus, Gang of Four, Pere Ubu, X-Ray Spex, Talking Heads, The Cramps, James Chance...?
Joey Ramone was right; Marge, Mary Ann. Liz, and Mary started a whole new trend in popular music. The Shangs are awesome --- thank you ladies!!! RIP Ganser twins --
I love their sulky style with the big bangs, the racy outfits and the dark mascara but Mary Weiss is so adorable at the same time that it's just fantastic. Great stuff. I love the early 60's!
One of the twins had a problem with her wig falling over her eyes.;and what became of Betty? Betty forgot to lip sync to her part of the song. She kind of spaced out.
Its because of the real foods they ate. Processed foods were not yet brainwashed into peoples heads Just look at Woman's breasts back then compared to now, a true indication of what you are is what you eat.
These young ladies were unbeatable in style, dress, looks ,beauty, attitude, playfulness and most of all their fabulous sound. Thank You Mary, Betty and the Twins--you were and are the greatest!
. . and their unabashed Queens dialects! Tell me mo'/ tell me mo'. I was a toddler (b. 1964) when this came out - wish I had been older and more aware! My house was filled with Big Band and jazz; very little pop music. Love having learned what was out there pre-Beatles, and what Americans were doing with pop music post-Beatles. This song is pure fun!
This song has some of the best lines: "He's good/bad, but he's not evil", "How does he dance?" "Close very close", "Is he tall?" Well, I gotta look up."
The Shangri-Las with their iconic mid-60s sound and look...! As a 12 year old kid growing up at this time, I thought that their look (especially Mary and her sister Betty) was how girl singers should look. My sister had a best friend whose look was very "Shangri-la-ish"... Drove me crazy! This live performance is great!
NOOOOO 😢😢😢 this is how I find out 🥺 May she rest in peace! Her vocals and stage presence has always stuck with me over a decade ago when I stumbled upon this song 😢
Arthur Maclean: Lead singer Mary Weiss is gorgeous, as is her sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Weiss, second from left. The Ganser twins, Marguerite "Marge" and Mary Ann, both with dark hair, were very endearing and stayed with the group after Betty Weiss left (and later returned). Love the Shangs!
Mary Weiss, the lead singer of the 1960s pop group the Shangri-Las, whose hits included “Leader of the Pack,” died on January 19, 2024.. She was 75. The Shangri-Las, formed in the New York City borough of Queens, were made up of two pairs of sisters: Weiss and her sister Elizabeth “Betty” Weiss, along with twins Marguerite “Marge” Ganser and Mary Ann Ganser. They met in school and as teenagers began performing at school dances and teen hops.
Phenomenal. The energy just blasts off the screen. Most snarling performance since Elvis, and it actually exceeds the quality of the 45, which was excellent. They invented the attitude of the anti-girl group, and I could watch this video until well after the cows come home - whenever that might be.
i'm63 yrs old saw them with my 25 yr old in rochester and they were worth price of admission if no other group came but lou christie was the hit of the show
Geez I was 6 when this came out. Man I thought Mary wife’s was the most beautiful woman on Earth and she was tough and she could sing. Music was in my blood I ended up meeting her the guy who formed a group with them George Morton and let me tell you Mary still look good when I was in my 20s.
God I'm obsessed, my mom doesn't understand where I got my old soul from. But I remember singing their song,"leader of the pack" when I was 6. 3 but this one is my fave
Mary Weiss made her speaking part 'he's good bad but he's not evil '' sound really great i could listen to her voice all day. she also has sex appeal [to use an old phrase] shou could of been an actress as well.
On this day in 1965 {July 29th} the Shangri-Las performed "Give Him A Great Big Kiss" on the ABC-TV program 'Where The Action Is'... Eight months earlier on December 20th, 1964 it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #83; and on January 24th, 1965 it peaked at #18 {for 2 weeks} and spent 9 weeks on the Top 100... On the same 'Action' show they also performed the record's B-side, a covered version of the Isley Brothers' "Twist and Shout"... Between 1964 and 1966 the quartet {two pair of sisters} had eleven Top 100 records; three made the Top 10 with one reaching #1, "Leader of the Pack" for one week on November 22nd, 1964...
This song is so great, I don't know where to start... it's true they left out the "how does he dance?" part...Mary always sounds like she's about to cry , even in a happy song like this...
I wasn't into the Shangri-Las until I saw the Stonewall movie. Most of the soundtrack was Shangri-las songs. I had to go and buy the greatest hits CD. Can't stop listening to it. Mary had a great voice for a White girl and the twins and her sister provide excellent backup.

This is also one of my favorite videos. I was in college and I watched the live broadcast of this video on Shindig! I had a secret crush on Mary Weiss. Looking back now I see that the twins weren't bad either.

"Well, I hear he's bad." "Ahhh, he's good bad, but he's not evil." How do you beat this performance? A youtube classic!
That's positive spin! Get a job with a senator! :-)
Reporter: Did the senator kill the lady with his car?
Girl: I guess so... but she was old anyway!

Actually it’s the way she wrinkles her nose when she sings the “dirty nails” line that gets me

Who doesn't? She's a goddess.
R.I.P. Mary Weiss, 1948-2024. I love how she waited JUST long enough before answering, "He's good-bad... "
"...Dirty finger nails, Oh Boy what a prize" = one of the best lyrics ever. Punk rock, 20 years before the term even existed.
turbo1964 10 years before punk was coined, not 20.

Rest in Peace, Mary... May you rock Heaven always!
Nice to see Sis Betty
That "whatever" look at :55 is EVERYTHING. RIP, Mary.

RIP Mary Weiss, born exact day and year as me. Died on my sister's birthday. Yes, we both loved the Shangri-las.
This is awesome. It’s badass. It’s real pop. It’s early garage. It’s punk. Its brilliant. 👊🏻
My favourite girl group. RIP Mary , give Marge and Mary Ann A Great Big Kiss!💋

Mid-Sixties! This came out in 1965.
There's something so special about Mary's voice. The New York Dolls did a fantastic version of this.
I saw them perform this in 1973 at Leeds Uni. 👌🏼🙂
Rest in peace Mary Weiss, Jan. 19, 2024
So rare to find a clip of Mary singing live!
Mary Weiss was certainly one to drool for back in the day! All the gals were!
