    Even the cheapest data recording equipment, if it shows the amplitude, phase, and frequency of a waveform to be essentially identical it is the same recording. I'm an electronics professional who understands physics, has designed speakers, worked as a rock band sound-man, and has a little bit of recording studio experience, as well as decades of test equipment repair experience. Any electronics tech who can read a digital oscilloscope display can tell you if 2 signals are identical, or just similar. Even 2 takes of a studio recording are very different as far as the observed waveforms are concerned. A 1,000 Hz tone, (fluctuates 1000 times per second,) is noticeably different from a 1,001 Hz tone though the human ear probably can't hear the difference in the pitch of the tones when played by themselves. Record them for 1 second and lay 1 recording over the other and they will start out apparently identical, but by the end of the second of recording will be completely the opposite of 1 another on the display. But picture the waveforms of a human voice pitch still lying perfectly atop one another halfway through a 3 minute performance, and you have a duplicate of the original performance. The laws of probability of it being a different performance are essentially zero. A human singer acclaimed for their 'perfect pitch' can't even make the waveforms overlay each other for a second, and that just represents a pure frequency. The amplitude of the waveform, (how tall it is on the display, how loud the voice is,) will also fluctuate in an obvious fashion and clearly show that it isn't the same recording. Same with the phase, minute fluctuations in pitch that average out over a fraction of a second. These things are simply impossible for the human voice to perfectly reproduce over a time greater than a fraction of a second, and would take multiple tries to even come close for a fraction of a second. Even inexpensive digitizing equipment or software will tell you for certain if 2 recordings are from the same digital data because they keep showing sections of the signal perfectly aligning in frequency, phase, and amplitude over and over during the several minute course of the comparison. The improbability of that happening goes up by a power of 10 every fraction of a second. It just can't happen in real life.

    Tamplin absolutely didn't "come clean". He deflected by saying, "Sure, we used backing tracks, just like ," while implying very strongly that he wasn't referring to the lead vocal. He will _not_ admit he was lip syncing the high notes in the concert performance (and even in some of his RUclips videos), and indeed took down or edited most of the videos that can prove it.

    • @Durwood71

      Tamplin admitted in a comment that the "backing" track also included a lead a vocal but insisted he still sang everything live. I guess he realized how dumb that rationalization sounded because he quickly deleted the comment. You see a screenshot of it in Fil's follow-up video.

    Your experiment was a success. It confirmed we can trust the Vocal Pitch Monitor to detect differences between takes. I’ve been using a similar plugin after I record vocals to confirm the notes are satisfactorily in tune, and if the notes are too far of tune, I’ll just re-record a section rather than relying on pitch correction or Autotune. As far as Ken is concerned, I won’t be holding my breath waiting for Ken to sing the same line 5 times and have any of the takes line up with each other perfectly. 😊

    Severe oversimplification of the situation with Ken... major oversimplification. Not even certain where to begin... this situation has nothing to do with 60's lip-synching TV performances, or Lenny Kravitz lol. This is about Ken holding himself out as a singer, vocal coach and guitar player par excellence. Someone who, while holding up the banner of God and Christianity, exudes a steady stream of arrogance about his abilities. Never hesitating to diminish the abilities of some of the greatest singers of all time, while puffing his own abilities up... this isnt about just one CHRISTIAN concert that he was caught cheating on. This is about an entire career on RUclips stuffed with lies and deception. ON TOP OF ALL OF IT, Ken has persisted in acting like an arrogant ass toward his naysayers and anyone speaking out against his behavior.
    ... he's been pretending to play and sing live for years. Then lying in response to folks calling him out, removing comments and the like. Even threatening legal action and manufacturing false legal threats. All while championing Christ. Major issues here.... and remember, if you want to talk about the concert in particular. It wasnt only that the software was used in the analysis. There is a different quality to the vocal sound and what the mic is picking up, when the pre-recorded tracks are in play. So, ya. The software is only piece of the puzzle. Just like when Ken is pretending to sing and play live to video and his proximity to the mic seems to have no effect whatsoever. Impossible. All this to say, the mess with Ken isnt just one or two things. It's an entire career built on lies, and also the audacity to prop those lies up under the banner of God. When you line up the facts and look at the issues honestly, it's some pretty gross behavior. This isn't going away anytime soon. This is going to hurt Ken's career in a big way. Forever. Is it deserved??........ sigh........ probably :/

    • @cheaptrickfanatic3496
      @cheaptrickfanatic3496 28 дней назад

      @@ericwarncke well, again, what you're describing above is not what's happening. It's not about "outrage" or simple "hypocrisy." Nor is it about one app. That was my point in my comment. It's about a man who has been a serious pompous dick about how insanely talented he is for years and years, but has now been caught lying to the public from multiple angles. Not just one. Then, to make matters even worse, he responded with outrage, shock, more lies, manipulation and even legal threats to individuals (and even the legal threats appear to have been faked! Lol).
      I'm not trying to be a dick. Don't get me wrong. I was just pointing out the fact that the video and even your comment to me are missing the mark on the Ken issue as a whole. That's all :) You made it sound like the situation wasn't a big deal and also that the issue was surrounding one app. Not the case. Ken has created quite a large mess for himself. AND, the f***ing cherry on top, Ken is doing it all with his arm around Jesus. My God, man. Ken is going to make sure he goes down in flames lol. He's got elephant balls, that's for certain :D

      Fully agree with you. However, I beleive that, at the start of his career, KT was able to do what he was pretending to sing or play with his guitar. However, again, he probably saw that he could not reach the same level over the years, and used these tricky ways to "make as if". Most likely for money reasons. And for a said-to-be Christian, such a lie leads to a minimum of interrogation 🙄

  • @PeterCamberwick
    @PeterCamberwick 29 дней назад +4

    The thing is, yes Phil proved it without question, but you don't need pitchmonitoring software to work it out. All you need to do, is get the audio from the "live" gig, and then the audio of the studio version of Living For My Lord, or any of the tracks from that gig. Pan one hard left, and the other hard right, then sync them up. You will be able to hear the portions when he actually sang live, which was not much. Then when the tracked vocal kicks in, you will just hear what sounds like one vocal, even though you've got two tracks playing at the same time. You'll be able to hear the differences of the live band and the studio version on the left and right side, but the vocal wil sound identical.

    • @ericwarncke
      @ericwarncke  29 дней назад +1

      A lot of people actually watch these types of videos at work with the sound off and captions on, so visual representations do better for this type of format. However, your idea would only work if the live and studio versions were the exact same tempo and arrangement. Unless the original was recorded to a strict click track, this wouldn't work without hours of meticulously warping of the live version to get it to match up, but then you are the one doing the editing! I agree with you that would be an excellent way to demonstrate this, but under most circumstances your method would be unreliable.

      Fil said he prefers to avoid that method because it's too subjective. When you have software that can detect and map pitches to a graph, it removes any subjectivity and gives you hard, objective data.

  • @GustavoLovato
    @GustavoLovato 24 дня назад +2

    Thank you for this tutorial on the software at the root of Fil’s videos. Ken tries to confuse the issue. The smoking gun is really his 2020 live stream of Livin’ for my Lord, which Fil analyzed and then Ken responded by deleting it from his channel, (which is in itself very telling). Using backing tracks and lip syncing are two different things. When bands use backing tracks (which is quite common as Ken correctly states) they are complementing their live sound (typically with backing vocals and/or keyboards). When singers lip sync, the pre recorded lead vocal is there and the singer is pretending to be hitting those notes. The criticism that Ken is facing is not about backing tracks, but lip syncing.
    I left respectful comments in Ken’s videos telling him he can still rock and asking him not to double-down and own his lip syncing and he has deleted them. (I have screenshots).
    His ego will be his undoing.

    Lip synching happened all the time on TV in the 60s and beyond. There's a big difference between that and lip synching in concert, especially when the audience has paid money to get in. But even when the concert is free, that setting is not one where lip synching is expected like TV is. It's cheating.

    I do deny that he was "on top of the world" as you claimed in the first 30 seconds of this video. Perhaps he was known to contemporary Christian rock fans for a while and because the competition in that arena was so sparse, he managed to win a few Dove awards. But imo, he was just as cocky back then and none of it sounds authentic. Take a band like Stryper... they had a great metal guitar sound, the singer could actually play pretty well and the other guy could play very well and the singer was amazing. The songs were constructed well and sounded great and it was loud Christian metal with a guy who could actually sing. OVER 10,000,000 albums sold worldwide. Ken Tamplin.... not so much.

      Stryper is still releasing new albums and touring, and they do everything 100% live. You can find videos from their latest tour posted on RUclips. Michael Sweet can't hit the dog whistle notes he used to, but he still has a great voice.

      The problem with Aussie (pub rock) bands in the 70s and 80s is they had a hard time replicating their live sound in the studio. Pulling these moves Ken would never have survived on the Aussie scene.
      As Peter Garret once said in an interview, if you start to think too much of yourself the Aussie fans will soon bring you back down to earth. (paraphrasing, but essentially what he meant)
      I wonder if the Brits have a similar attitude, which would explain why Fil has issues with them saying it's live, but not being entirely true.

    This video is an excellent demonstration of why music sucks now a days. Im not picking on you here and it is not my intention to do so. However, you are trying to sing a song, but you don't have a melody. If there is no melody, there is no song. Your melody is so bad, even the pitch software can't find the notes in the melody. . You sing the phrase "I been a lot of places before. In that somewhat large musical phrase there are ten syllables. You only have melody on four out of the ten syllables. "I been", and "for or". What is all the mess in the middle? There is no melody on the largest part of the musical phrase, "a lot of places".
    When you sing there so much slurring and slop going on with all the syllables in the words, whatever melody you think you are making is not clear enough to establish a motive, much less a musical phrase. If there is no motive, there is no phrase. If there is no musical phrase there is no melody. If there is no melody there is no song. So get on a piano or guitar and pick out what notes go into the melody you are trying to create. Maybe you can play the melody from the guitar or piano into the pitch software and then sing the same melody and compare the two. Then you should have something legit. Good or bad, it will at least be legit musically speaking.
    If you can compare your musical instrument melody with your vocal melody using the pitch software, that would be an amazingly cool thing to do. You might be able to restore musical integrity to all of mankind. Do you see what I am trying to get at here? Thank you, good luck and God bless.

    Despite not being accurate below a cent, it should still be equal in equal out, and yes it is a fingerprint like issue. Notice how good your five samples sounded together. As you stacked them, some of your vibrato was phasing, but by the time you got five takes it was quite smooth. There is a tremendous amount of envy at the root of much “fandom”. It strikes us in very bad taste when someone is deceptive about their skills, skills which we wish we had. There is sourness to the depth and ferocity of these attacks in Ken that is independent of what punishment should fit his crime. I don’t know what Fil’s motive beyond a bunsiness model has him stuck making pitch monitor comment videos. I would prefer to hear him making more of his own music and sinking or swimming with that. Anyone can compare two radar gun readings, hopefully we use the power of this software to learn valuable and encouraging things about the human voice. But overall the worst thing is how awful a person he is! A total bully and narc. He uses his money to bully anyone who even mentions his name by using threats to sue. I think you proved that it's more the timing rather than the pitch that differs. A point that Fil kinda of glosses over, where he's more concerned about the pitch be autotuned or corrected. In some of his examples one can conecde that the pitch may vary a little from a cell phone recording to a studio live stream to the original recording... if someone was lipsyncing what is NOT going to change is the timing. In the case of KT that Fil did the timings matched perfectly... i.e. Ken was lip syncing no doubt. What you've shown is exactly what a "chorus" effect is... it's the variation in timing that makes us hear multiple voices. If you take the same vocal track, doubled it, and pitch corrected one track, and then played them back together... it's simply going to sound like one voice at a different combined pitch.
    Fil is showing two different things... those that are lip syncing and those that are pitch correcting - be it live with Autotune hardware or during mixing with a pitch correction plugin like Melodyne. Of course I'm sure there are some performers out there that are lip syncing to a track that they pitch corrected in the sudio. I'm also sure there are probably artists out there that are completey unaware that their label and sound engineers / mixers have pitch corrected their vocal(s) on an album. IMO pitch correction is a form of affirmative action, where we've lowered the talent level bar to where anyone can sing on an album... unless maybe if you sound like William Hung sing "She Bangs." :)

    • @PeteC62
      @PeteC62 28 дней назад +5

      I don't think he proved what you said he did in your first line at all. His pitch was clearly all over the place, especially in the last bit of vibrato. What the pitch software is showing is that human vocal cords just can't reproduce exactly the same sequence of precise pitches from one take to the next, which is why none of the takes line up in the vertical axis, even if you shift the horizontal axis so the note starts at exactly the same moment for each of them.
      Conversely, if you're lip syncing to a recording, the waveform from the lip synced "performance" will line up perfectly in both axes with the original source material used as the backing track.
      This is the very crux of Fil's lip syncing analysis videos. (I'm not going to get into pitch correction/auto tune here, because it's irrelevant to the lip syncing analysis.)

    • @HiltonBenchley
      @HiltonBenchley 28 дней назад +2

      I think you've missed the point of what Eric was doing. I don't believe the KT case has anything at all to do with pitch correction and Fil didn't suggest such a thing. But what Eric was trying to show was how difficult it is for a singer to exactly replicate a vocal performance. Eric had five attempt and all were difficult. And he only sang two bars each time, and making a three or four minute performance is even more impossible.

  • @coder4liberty

    It's one thing to use an isolated vocal or a mostly isolated vocal. Doing that with a vocal in a mix is not reliable. "Isolated vocal" does not mean a vocal from an AI based stem splitter. Those tracks have a lot of missing data and are not reliable for pitch either. You may get results and then again you may not.

      Sounds like something you can test, right?

    • @coder4liberty
      @coder4liberty 28 дней назад

      @@ericwarncke In some cases. The more complex the mix is the harder it is. Those stem splitters always have a stem called "other" that has everything that the AI couldn't separate. It usually contains a mangled mess of things including parts of the vocals. On top of that those tools use FFT to do the analysis.
      Splitting the spectrum up with FFT can cause a lot of phase issues across the frequency spectrum which are most noticeable in the high frequencies. So not only is there loss in the Ai figuring out what is what but phase issues, all depending on how complex the mix is that it's trying to extract the instrument or vocal from. If you have an instrument that is playing the same note as the vocal in unison it may not be able to separate the two.

      Hi Ken. The point is, he's denyed it, and continues to deny it. Noone with any sense is saying that he can't sing. Many are questioning how good his course is and whether it's worth the money. But the real problem is that he continues to deny that he lipsynced, even though he got caught out fair and square. He could have said, "OK guys, I had a bad throat that day and I didn't want to let people down. SO we used tracked vocals.". To be fair, that wouldn't have washed anyway, because he's been caught doing it on his videos, not just the live show. But if he'd just admitted it, he could have saved face a bit. Instead, he just keeps coming out with his catch phrase, "The proof is in the singing", when it's been demonstrated without doubt that he wasn't. It's not a good look for someone who claims to be able to teach people to sing better than anyone else.
