    That brought tears 2 my eyes. Sugar Ray never sat down. Then he said, come on. These are 2 race horses with heart going head & head like Champion. 15 rounds in a known stop battle. Blow for Blow. Era or no Era. Floyd would not be able 2 do combat with these guys. Straight up facts. HD3 I know Sugar Ray Leonard Manager in real life. He is a jockey agent. His name is JD Brown. I work with race horse for 30 + years. Also, owned a race horse. My heart thrives seeing horse run. Seen the best come & go. Sports is not like use 2 be. No it's a business. That's Facts HD3

    It's amazing that Duran is 69 years old and has had lung problems since 2001 (due to an accident), and still only has mild cold conditions with Covid-19 (a sneaky virus that loves to attack the already impaired).
    Let's hope Duran recovers 100%. He deserves to go out on his own terms.

    Roberto Duran 119 fights 70-4, Thomas Hearns 67 fights 48-4, Marvin Hagler 67 fights 62-3, Sugar Ray Leonard 40 fights 36-3, Oscar De La Hoya 45 fights 39-6. All great champions, ALL took losses on their record to fight the best in their day. They shared 20 losses between them averaging out at 4 losses each yet does anyone deny their greatness? IF Wilder IS a true champion he won't let one loss stand in the way of his career or his legacy. Just like these champions and other past greats he should want to fight ALL of the top tier fighters of his generation and prove himself irrespective of the results.

    Nice throwback fight. Nice to hear your commentary on this fight. Leonard fought the wrong fight for him. Duran was in tiptop shape here. If you hear Leonard commentary for the second fight he was smart to get Duran back in the ring so quickly because Duran would balloon up in weight and get out of shape in between fights. I'm not saying Duran would have won the second fight but he was not in shape for it. Leonard definitely took advantage of that and fought his type of fight was well. Two greats of all time for sure.

Anyway, this is arguably the fight with the most talent in the ring ever especially seeing how close to prime they were. Duran slipped a lot punches as his defense was something else, and coming up from 135 facing a great fighter like Ray. Truly a great fight by both guys in incredible shape.

    I always scored this 8-6-1 for Duran. I was a huge Sugar Ray Leonard fan and hated Duran at that time, but I grew to love this fight for the level of skill, ferocity and intensity, and it showed that Duran belonged with the other greats even at their weight level. I think this was peak Duran and he never had the same level of speed and intensity after this fight. This is also the fight where SRL grew up in the ring. I think he said once when you are getting beat up you can either give in or fight back, and the boy became a man that night by coming back in the middle rounds and basically fighting even with Duran from Round 4 or 5 on, giving as good as he got, and proving to himself that he had the grit and determination to go with his superstar level of talent.

    • @thomaspalmieri6038
      @thomaspalmieri6038 6 месяцев назад

      @@sherrillraymond7595 I hated Duran and loved Ray Leonard, but that was Duran's night. However a number of rounds were very close so I can see how someone would give it to Ray. When the final bell sounded Duran was ecstatic and Ray was despondent. Look at Sugar Ray's face when they went to the cards. He knew he lost. But he showed his greatness the next fight by dominating Duran with a different fight plan. I would love to have seen Duran from the first fight against prime Floyd. Ray fought the wrong fight, but ended up producing a classic by going mano - a mano with Macho himself! Ray said that was the night when he found out who he really was as a boxer, because he was getting beat up by someone who was meaner and tougher than he was, and he found the mental and spiritual resources to fight back and finally go toe to toe with him the rest of the fight. He might never have TKO'd Tommy Hearns or fought back with ferocious intensity against Marvin Hagler in Round 9 of their fight when he was being pummeled in the corner of the ring if he hadn't found his warrior spirit in that first Duran fight.

    • @sherrillraymond7595
      @sherrillraymond7595 6 месяцев назад

      @@thomaspalmieri6038 nah my dude Sugar Ray thought he had won and a lot of other people thought he should've won too, Duran best rounds was early in the fight he rocked Ray a few times but going in that Sugar Ray got him the bell saved Duran in the 13th and he barely through a punch in the 15th you suppose to beat the champ convincingly and that wasn't a convincing victory for Duran to me

    • @thomaspalmieri6038
      @thomaspalmieri6038 6 месяцев назад

      @@sherrillraymond7595 Sugar Ray has said more than once over the years that he looked in the mirror before the fight and he knew before he left the dressing room that it was not going to be his night. At the end of the 15th Duran was wild with enthusiasm because he knew he had won the fight, and the picture of Ray shows him looking scared and depressed as the announcer read the score cards because he knew in his heart of hearts that he had lost the fight. I just went on RUclips and during the post fight wait before the score cards were read, ringside analyst Dr. Ferdie Pacheco, looking at both corners, said and I quote: "It looks like Sugar's resigned to losing, and Duran knows he won the fight." It's right there at 1:16:26. Ringside announcer Bill Mazer, who called the fight, was criticizing Duran for not doing anything in the 15th Round, because in his opinion the fight was too close to call. He repeated that statement after the fight, before the score cards were read, that in his opinion the fight was too close to call. So not everyone thought Duran won, or were sure that he had won, but most people did, and so did the two fighters, and so did two out of the 3 judges (it was a majority decision, not a split decision, 2 for Duran, 1 draw) which is all you need to know. These judges had excellent reps, it wasn't like now where you have to virtually shut out Canelo to get a win on the cards.
      I've never subscribed to the theory that you have to beat the champ convincingly to win the title. Do we just give the Chiefs 7 points at the start of the game during the playoffs this year because you have to beat them convincingly to win the title? By that criterion Ray should not have won the title from Hagler in 1987, even though I thought Ray had eked out a narrow victory in that fight, which in my mind makes him the winner.
