WOW! I'm just getting home from a long night on patrol. It was a nice quiet Christmas night on the streets until I stop a 350Z with the top down at 5am driving like an A-hole. Of course the driver was drunk as hell so instead of getting off at 5:30am Christmas morning I'm home at 8am. I check RUclips before getting some sleep before going back to work at 5:30pm and find a freshly uploaded RCR video! Merry Christmas to me!
My grandfather had a Cub Cadet, very similar design (if not this one), he used that thing for 40 years until his death. My aunt lives next to my grandmother, I think she still might use it to mow my grandmother's lawn for her. Impressive as hell.
Growing up we had a Sears garden tractor from probably the same era. You could attach all sorts of implements on it, and it had multiple power take-offs for different types of equipment. There was even a self-powered roto-tiller that could be raised and lowered from the back. It was quite neat. Oh and it had a 3 speed manual transmission with a high and low range!
Yea, I've got one too, you're right, they're about as neat as a shirt full of pockets (when a wren finds it). When it comes to the nitty gritty; my favorite is always a cub; I've got a 124 C/C that the biggest cat in this world couldn't replace ; cause these things can really grow on ya😆
@@brandonpeterman9964 yea 10-4, but the only one that I've ever seen was about a 36 incher, ofset to the right: now if you'd let it get REALLY grizzly, it could dig up China😆
Awesome, but I wish we got to hear it. Takes me back to Best Christmas Gift Ever. 1972, upstate New York covered deep in snow of Christmas morning. Under the tree was a tiny toy tractor. There was also a key with a plastic fob that read "Get a Job!" Just out the front door was a shiny red Wheel Horse lawn tractor, snow plow attached, chains attached to its large mud tires. I was overwhelmed. Many good times on that tractor, hauling friends around on flatbed trailer out into the woods, racing down hills, wheelies, and, yes, making a buck or two mowing and plowing. Good times.
My grandfather had two of these cub cadets and he would let us grandchildren race them around his yard in them. This episode brought back some good memories, thanks.
A neat garden tractor I have is a Bolens DGT-1700 garden tractor, it is newer than this cub cadet, it is from the 80s. But it left the factory with a 3 cylinder liquid cooled Mitsubishi diesel.
It's really interesting hearing about the passions some people have. Stuff I would never care to read about or learn about for myself, but is interesting in this format.
when I was young, single digits, someone gave me one of these tractors. my dad got it running for me and I had countless years of enjoyment flying around the fields of my grand parents farm. it wasn't hydrostat, just belt driven to what looked like a home brew clutch. 1st and 2nd gears were slow, then shift into 3rd gear and it would take off 20mph.
This made me smile because as a kid we had a 10Hp Cub Cadet which I used to mow 3 acres of lawn at my Dad's house. I use to envision myself drifting it through the turns at the local dirt track winning races lol
8 horse and 10 horse power Kohler motors have roller bearing cranks. Ran one for 25 years before it's first rebuild. Good for another 25! Flathead motor are not high horse power due to limited lift from the valves, but are easier to maintain.
Garden tractor pulling was a thing around here 20 years ago. We had a very active local club. We had a family business selling International Harvester products up until we saw the writing on the wall with IH in trouble and we sold out about 1982. Fast forward to about year 2000 and my brother joins this club. These real IH Cub Cadets ( Because no IH fan calls the MTDs real Cubs.) were so overbuilt that using them as a base to build a puller for stock and mod stock classes was the hot setup at that time. Bro cruised the want adds, bought several good donor machines and built a team of yellow horses so strong that after bringing home a dumpster full of trophies over about four years with this club, I think they finally just suggested he stay home. Now most good 1962 to 1980 Cubs left are too valuable to mod out for pulling, you see them being restored to dust catchers for collectors. At least that’s the trend I’m seeing. Nice video sirs!
We've got a '70 Cub Cadet with the 16hp Kohler. After a lot of goofing around with polishing and deburring plus some carb work, it goes about 18mph. The torque is insane - we use it for snow plowing, and even dragged a full-size Dodge pickup with a stuck rear end up the driveway with it mid-winter.
I love those old International Cub Cadets. I restored a 1974 International Cub Cadet 129 a couple years ago. I got a lot of pictures from when I first got it, the first power wash cleaning it up videos of it being brought back to life and the tear down and disassembly, restoration and finished tractor. It still has the original 12 HP Kohler engine and muffler and I also added a big exhaust stack and installed a custom stainless steel mesh grille
I know I’m 4 years late here.. but I think that is my grandpa’s old Club Cadet. He passed away 7 years ago. Pretty cool to see. It would have came from Connecticut.
You " SOLD" it ?????😨😲; International Harvesters 1st commandment: THOU SHALL NOT SELL YOUR CUB CADET: these are made to be taken with you when you leave from here 😓😭
My close friend in High school had 2 of these that he used for his lawn service. His Dad used them in the 60s and 70s for his own lawn service in high school. They both had the kohler motors. They ran perfectly and cut perfectly. Everything on them was original other than like, the points... (Even the SPARK PLUGS were original, they were just cleaned and gapped once a season) They really don't make things like they used to and this is a prime example.
Life in Farmland - we are addicted to Cubs. I have two newer cub cadets and two older Cub Lo Boys. Always interested in doing a diesel swap into one of our Lo Boys.
I love that the engine is facing backward, with the shaft coming from the "front" of it. The pulley shaft left on the front side could be connected to an alternator or generator for an emergency. Awesome build!
The original engine would have had a belt driven starter generator on that “front” shaft, as well as the PTO clutch that runs a mower deck, snowblower, etc.
Still want to see more of his collection on tractors He is 100% right about how well the older Cubs were made We had a 1960s Cub Cadet 70 when I was younger and it never had any problems until sometime in the late 90s (had a hard time finding parts from what I can remember as it was way before internet days lol) so my dad gave it to my brother in law, he put a different engine in it and last I heard my brother in law gave it to his dad to use and it’s still going.
My Grandpa had that same tractor with a gas engine. He bought the damn thing new and he used it until the late 2000's. He passed on this past June at the age of 92 and that tractor is still sitting in my Grandparent's garage.
The longevity of the old Cubs reminds me of the older Honda lawnmowers. The OHV Honda 5hp mower from 20 years ago is pretty much indestructible. I've had my Honda since 91, it's still going strong. It has had maybe 3 oil changes (yeah, I know).
When I was a kid we had this old Torro riding mower from the 60s. My friends and I took the blade assembly off and put the carb from my broken down honda xr75 on it. That thing was a blast! It was pretty fast and would jump off the ground when you started it off in 3rd. We had a lot of fun with that thing.
between this mighty car mods and roadkill collab video and Jay Leno's Jensen interceptor video it has been a damn good Christmas on RUclips for gear heads.
Also the Cub Cadet garden tractors from this era that had manuals used a transmission from a Farmall Cub tractor, the transmission is way overbuilt for them.
It may be the only garden tractor that also has a direct connection to the transmission no belts involved unlike wheel horses or john deeres. Panzers have a cut down ford rear end but they still use a belt
There are a few tractors with direct drive transmissions, I have a Bolens 1250 and it is on the large end of being a garden tractor. And it has a massive shaft drive hydro static transmission. I actually dropped a big 2 cylinder Wisconsin engine into it, and it makes this cub cadet look small.
Patrick Kissman Ah yes I forgot about those they are after the tube frame bolens if im not mistaken. Deutz made a really heavy duty garden tractor in the 80s with a locking differential that was like that too
They were actually built during the same time period as the tube frames, If I remember correctly mine was built in 1968. I have a few videos of it on my channel if you are interested.
I still use the 1974 Cub Cadet my grandparents bought brand new. It mows my lawn in the summer, and snowblows my driveway in the winter. The only substantial repair I had to do was replacing the electromagnetic clutch.
2 years later and I find this video. My dad has a cub cadet of 1970ish cub cadet. She can be a pain sometimes but once she's going she's going. She's decently fast at near sprint speeds. We got a bunch of add on parts as well. A plow, a tiller, and mower blades (a few others that I forget) all weigh a decent amount and not a one man lift job.
Garden tractors have a huge following. I am from close to South Bend Indiana, where the Wheel Horse factory was. Wheel Horses especially have a huge collectability
These mowers are like the old steel radial brand tires. We got a plow truck with steel radial tires and havent filled them up since we got. Made things so good back then, that stuff would go out of business!
My grandpa has an old cub cadet similar to the ones Justin here has. I always thought he had gone through the whole damn tractor and replaced every part to keep it alive, but now I'm thinking it's possible he didn't actually need to. it's insane to hear they lasted so long right from the factory.
This has to be one of the coolest videos you have done to date, fucking really makes me wish i could find a solid vintage project tractor. Always have had this crazy idea lingering in my head since my friend's grandpa and him restored a JD 140 when we were younger...
With the multiplication of torque through the gear reduction, that might actually be a fact. Unless you bolt a 4 cyl Honda engine into a cub cadet, then the honda would put enough torque to the ground to snap a building in half lol.
Actually a 1650 Cadet will fit in the back of a Chev Uplander minivan with about no room to spare. Ramps and two big guys will allow you to push one in without too much trouble (forget about lifting it). A John Deere 318 uses the same Sunstrand hydraulic pump/motor. This class of garden tractor is very much alive today Kioti, Kuboto, Deere and others make an upscale machine for the low low price of 5k to 10k plus toys. The old Cub Cadet is a great low cost platform for a loader or similar project. On the other hand the light weight MTD lawn tractor is a great lawn mower but it isn't built to handle anything more. Cool project !
Reminds me of the mid-70's Sears lawn tractors my gramps had and my uncle recently restored. He also had a few Cubs from this period too, one even had a dually setup that has a few stories surrounding it
International Harvester used to make things like this to last forever as a form of advertising. They also made pick-up trucks that Mr. Regular should review.
Cool tractor, my dad's doing something similar with a diesel and a bolens 1886. I've been using a 1455 for years to mow the lawn with negligible trouble. Oiling ring is messed up now so it burns about a sixth of its oil capability in one run. I can't complain since it was built in the 60s or 70s and has been a work horse all this time.
Mr. Regular, Merry Christmas! Thank you very much for featuring the 1966 Cub Cadet lawn tractor with a swapped 'turbocharged diesel engine!' Very cool! :-)
Older cub cadets are geared faster amazingly. My grandpa has one and his friend is using it to build a HOUSE. It’s a cub cadet 147 from the late 60’s-early 70’s
Man, this reminds me of my ancient Snapper/Massey Ferguson 1650. 16hp single cylinder Kohler flathead, two-speed hydrostatic drive, hydraulic 3-point hitch, hydraulic mower deck, and electric PTO. After some work to make it run, that old Kohler would fire right up every time, and rattle your teeth out in the process.
my brother in law had a plow on his in upstate New York of a similar vintage (I don't remember the exact year) and it was just a tiny tank you couldn't kill. eventually we need more HP to move CNY snow, and sold it still running.
It has a top speed of a brisk walk.
Aaron Ries lol you can swap pulleys on a stock tractor and go 20mph
arien wilkins I believe he was quoting the yard man review from way back not making a statement
Dan W ohhh yeah you're right
arien wilkins he said it doesn’t have belts
The no belts comment was about the transmission. The engine has belts.

My grandfather has 2 IH Lo-Boys (enlarged version of this with a 4 cylinder) and a newish Cub Cadet (6-8 years old) with the shaft drive.
love that yellow chevette in the background my grandparents had either a 1979 or a 1980 chevy chevette 4 door hatch.
OMG nostalgia overload. My family still has our Cadet.
my brother in law had a plow on his in upstate New York of a similar vintage (I don't remember the exact year) and it was just a tiny tank you couldn't kill. eventually we need more HP to move CNY snow, and sold it still running.
gotta ditch the hydro. throw something in it with gears and you'll fly. I had a toro with a 10hp Briggs that would pull 40 mph
Nothing wrong with Toro's ; might be a bit fast when mowing an obstacle course though 😆
Happy non-denominational holiday season Mr. Regular and Roman!
Makes me wanna fix up my great grampa's old Cub 123.
Oh WOW, I'm about 2/3 through with my 124; nothing fancy, just trying to make it like/close to what it should look like and work😄
this is pretty cool, thanks dude. merry Christmas
Eyyy, this wasn't a bad gift from Mr.Regular. Merry Christmas Mr.Regular!
I love that you got a tractor on RCR. If you can find one in this ungodly earth, please review an old school Lamborghini tractor.
Best cover intro song yet, Roman. Cheers!
