Caterpillar Sixty Engine Startup Demo

  • A detailed demonstration of the startup of a late nineteen-twenties Caterpillar model Sixty. During it's years of production, the 60 was the largest crawler in Caterpillar's catalogue, weighing in at 19,000lbs. Built from 1925 until 1931, the 60 was a highly successful design that Caterpillar inherited from the C. L. Best Tractor Company when the Holt Manufacturing Company merged with the former to create the Caterpillar Tractor Company in 1925. C.L. Best had began building the 60 in 1919. Powered by a massive inline four cylinder engine displacing 1128.2 cubic inches (18.5 litres), the sixty developed 72 flywheel horsepower at a mere 650 RPM. Top speed is stated at 3.6mph (5.8km/h). The sixty excelled at both industrial and agricultural jobs and continued to do so long after machines where fielded to replace it. Pioneer Acres Museum, Irricana, Alberta.

    Stumbled upon this place while on a road trip with my wife. Talked her into going. She was bored to tears and we walked around for almost 5 hours and I didnt want to leave grinning war to ear. We were the only people there in september a few years ago and the people were kind enoughto let us tour the truck restoration exhibit on our own. What an amazing collection. Had a great time. Thank you

He replaced it with an Allis Chalmers HD7 and later replaced that with the Caterpillar D4 that I still have. Alot of work done by crawlers over the years.

Steam traction,and multifuel engines,will rule the roost,and vultures also will have come calling!! Simply put,far too much dependence on technology that is far too delicate! Brilliant video. They certainly had a sketchy way of starting them back in the day though. I wonder how many limbs were broken or amputated in the process......?

      As long as you keep your body out of the rotational plane of the flywheel there really is little danger to your body, it just takes a bit of technique.

    2 spins and its ready. We will never see machines like this build here in this country again. Sad.

      EFI, Has to spin up to a certain rpm before certain sensors get readings before the ECU will call for fuel or ignition.
      An EFI car has a long crank time because its waiting for the reading from the Crank or Cam position to determine TDC, then it fires fuel and ignition

    Gas of the day approx 25c per gallon and if road tax existed then, farmers and contractors would probably get a rebate on that, making the fuel less expensive. No doubt these old girls slurped through a fair bit of it when under load. The massive torque produced seems quite unreal when compared with high revving engines!

    • @Rainhill1829
      @Rainhill1829  3 года назад

      Yes they are real torque monsters for sure.
