Do you have any considerations on visiting DPRK, it'd be especially fitting for Bald lol. There's basically just sensationalized vlogs atm, but has great value when filmed in your guys' style!
this is a little dramatic guys. I'm a foreigner and the first time I tried Durian, I found the smell a bit strong but also musky sweet. In the west - and especially in the UK - we have a lot of things that smell and sometimes taste a lot worse that people eat every day. An old goat cheese with honey is very comparable - it's pungent, spicy, creamy and sweet at the same time. Which is exactly what Durian is. It's vanilla, custard, cream, tropical fruit and spicy onion juice together with a smell that indeed is something to get used to. However nowhere is it called 'disgusting' or 'garbage fruit', maybe among some backpackers who only eat mcdonalds and takeaway stuff. If this video was about Noni, it would have been realistic. Alas, it's about one of the most sought after fruits in all of S-E asia, including China. Make this video again, grow up and then try Noni fruit. Then you'll go back to Durian and understand why you were just being dramatic :)
This is so insane! Im from Sweden and i found durian to be the most delicious edible piece of thing that a human can consume. Better than any pastry imo! but well, i also love surströmming. It might be a correlation...
Durian have many varieties, which is why some taste great while others taste somewhat foul to most, just like cheese. And just like cheese, each varieties have their own fans. The cheese analogy even extend to its smell in that it smell bad to those who are unfamiliar with it but once you like durian, it somehow smell like the best thing in the world. Not sure about surstromming though, lol.
10:56 - that is not a 'Lychee', that is a 'Rambutan' fruit. 'Rambut' means hair in the Malay/Indonesian language hence the 'Rambut'an... oh and also, Durian also comes from Malay/Indonesian word of 'Duri' which means 'thorn'.
Hospitality was there because they were over-charging the fruits tenfold! 😅 If you don't know the prices in Vietnam get ready to pay 5-10 times more than real price...
@@BackpackerBen if you drink after eating durian, it can kill you, right? That’s what I was told out in Malaysia, Thailand etc. so I never got the chance.

And then there are the different types themselves. It's best done in a small group to maximise variety Perhaps next time try it with an experienced local and learn why many are passionate about the fruit. There is a place in my hometown (small town full of Amish people in Northern Indiana in the US) that makes Pho, and they have smoothies and Durian is on the list of available smoothies. Its not always in stock, but when it is, I ALWAYS get a Durian smoothie. It is good as a smoothie, and I am sure the coldness of it takes a lot away from the smell. Something that tastes like crap would be more palatable if it werent served warm and steamy, or room temperature, is my thought process. The coldness at least creates a little bit of mental separation. Of course, I dont think it tastes like crap, that is just the reaction most people have. Maybe that is why my experience is different with it.
@lowda9 I was dying to try it ever since I saw Andrew Zimmern try (and fail) to eat it on 3 different occasions. I almost jumped out of my skin in excitement when I saw it on the menu lol
The trick to Durian is freezing it. Freezing durian will get rid of the smell and turn it's texture to a sort of slush. That's the proper way to eat it. Eating it raw is sort of like a "challenge", just for fun.
Excellent video Ben! I hope to see more like this you make a good food vlogger man! I have no freakin clue how bald ate that durian vomit like it was a tasty cheeseburger or something! Lol
If you are a traveller and want to keep it budget tight, do not go to this market 😂 it is often more exspensive cus it is famous and there are a lot of foreigners here! Try to look for a more local one (the one where few people know english 😂)
I have never heard litchi pronounced quite the way Ben and Bald say it before. I also love dragon fruit but it is quite expensive in my country so I don't often buy it. Next maybe take a page out of Harold's book and try a bit of snake?
Custard apple (cherimoya) is delicious! I used to work on the fruit and veg section of my local Tesco and would buy them whenever they were available. You should try Chikoos. They are these small brown fruits found in India, Central America and other places which have a fudge/brown sugar flavour to them.
hahaha I love durian. Either you love it or you hate it and nothing in between.. My sister hates so much (the only one in the family) and she would ran into her room and lock herself shut in
The trick to enjoying Durian is to throw your biased expectations due to its unfamiliar smell out the window. Give the fruit the benefit of the doubt. Eat slowly and in a relaxed manner and then you'll realize that it's one of the best-tasting fruit anywhere on Earth. Once your palate gets adjusted a few seconds later, the smell will no longer bother you.

The coldness at least creates a little bit of mental separation. Of course, I dont think it tastes like crap, that is just the reaction most people have. Maybe that is why my experience is different with it.
You're right, many things are more palatable colder
@lowda9 I was dying to try it ever since I saw Andrew Zimmern try (and fail) to eat it on 3 different occasions. I almost jumped out of my skin in excitement when I saw it on the menu lol
"Taste like heaven but smells like shit"
Ben - "ill be the judge of that" 😆
Hahaha! Awesome meeting you mate!
Durian is delicious. One of my favourite fruit.season just ended in the Philippines 😭
Lol
Hahaha me neither mate
If it's good enough for the Vietnamese it's good enough for the English. Merry Christmas sweet people.
Rudolph 😼
If you are a traveller and want to keep it budget tight, do not go to this market 😂 it is often more exspensive cus it is famous and there are a lot of foreigners here! Try to look for a more local one (the one where few people know english 😂)
Hahah yeah we paid to much but no problem they were friendly
I may be crazy, I think durian smells quite nice
I’ve never smelt it outside of the packaging though lol
How about a Ben and Bald(Soviet) Christmas Special from Cambodia ?
👀
I have never heard litchi pronounced quite the way Ben and Bald say it before. I also love dragon fruit but it is quite expensive in my country so I don't often buy it. Next maybe take a page out of Harold's book and try a bit of snake?
They’re saying it wrong and that’s not even what they were eating lol
Mr. Bald will eat up all the durian fruits after drinking one bottle of kingfeemer
Custard apple (cherimoya) is delicious! I used to work on the fruit and veg section of my local Tesco and would buy them whenever they were available. You should try Chikoos. They are these small brown fruits found in India, Central America and other places which have a fudge/brown sugar flavour to them.

@@robertpavey5615 Why No ??? Where are you from ?😼🥴
unlucky that you guys didnt end up liking the durian. but at least you tried it and decided for yourselves.
I absolutely love durian ! When I smell it, I have to have it! And I'm from the United states. Is actually very expensive.
that is weird, Durian is the best fruit on earth . but he is tasting what he read not what the fruit is actualy is....
Us real ones watched our lad eat this the first time . Glad to see your channel grow
Legend mate!! I remember my first subs don’t worry 😎 the OGs
hahaha I love durian.
We had plenty of custard apples growing up here in Australia. If you get the chance, try the Monstera Deliciosa. Cheers.
eat the leaves?
what a nice driver Mr. Liverpool
😆 legend
Give it up for Mr. bald, no half measures. He was all in with that durian 🫡
