Might have been part of the 16th Luftwaffe Field Division. It fought in Normandy, and was destroyed in the defence of Caen. So, that hole would have been from a .303 bullet.
@@wahoo.Guess work, really. Looking at Luftwaffe units in Normandy, and being an infantryman rather than AA troops, 16th Fd Div seems to be the a logical answer. Of course, I may be completely off the mark.
@@MatMcLachlanHistory Very lucky to have one that has the bullet hole through the liner too - 99% of helmets I've seen with holes never have the matching liner. It's a gem
It would have actually been field blue, the Luftwaffe used a special shade of blue to signify the branches equipment. Overtime however this blue tends to slightly fade into a somewhat gray color giving off the shade we see today, none the less a wonderful helmet.-cheers
@@hanstragarsky1340 As you probably know, the Luftwaffe used the blue colours with the M35's but when they realised the paints were too glossy (as they were for Parade's etc.) most branch paints went to various grades of grey but the luftwaffe (depending on manufacturer) always had some that had a blue tint.. I've got two M35's one from SE and one from Quist both DD LW's and both have a very different appearance, SE is a very matte finish and has a kind of brown tint to it, Quist is very glossy and blue, interesting stuff.
I've got one of those helmets but I have no idea about its history, the inner lining is gone. Anyone got any ideas on what I should be looking for to find out more?

Amazing how you figured where this soldier could’ve been killed and when, I’m a ww2 historian and not even I could figure that out

He probably shot his helmet himself and just walked around looking tough with a bullet hole' it's what I would do
Lol
“Making it unlikely he survived” pretty sure rifle round through the head equals death
Murdered after he surrendered.
He had it coming

You sound like oceanliner designs
Thanks! That’s quite a compliment!
wow no blood on the leather liner. It's more likely the helmet was used for target practice after the war. Not dramatic at all.
There’s blood on the liner and the chinstrap, but I chose not to point it out in the video.
Nice battle demaged congrats 👍
The helmet would have been grey to start with and then overpainted with the camo. Not the other way around :)
Yes, you are correct. It was field grey, then painted with the sand camo. And then later the camo paint was scratched off to reveal the original grey.

It wasn’t a tragedy when it happened I’m sure. Let’s keep it that way. So we remember who the enemy was.
