7029 Clun Castle rips through Swinton at speed! | The White Rose | 6/7/24

- Today’s video was one that I had in the back of my mind but wasn’t able to plan in advance because I wasn’t sure how the day would pan out. WR Castle Class 4-6-0 No. 7029 Clun Castle was hauling Vintage Trains’ “The White Rose” from Tyseley to Scarborough, notably this was the first time 7029 has ever visited Scarborough! The tour travelled both directions via Birmingham New Street, Derby, avoiding Sheffield via the ‘old road’, Pontefract and York before travelling up to Scarborough through Malton. Conditions for the day were patches of sunshine!
I was in the North East this morning attending a family event so when it began to become clear I would be able to chase 7029, I threw a plan together quickly and raced out, heading first to York abroad Grand Central. Unfortunately the event did mean I didn’t have my usual equipment on me so all shots are just filmed on the phone. We begin on Platform 5 witnessing No. 7029 curve into the station canopy at York, attracting quite a bit of attention in doing so! She is then seen departing York with a slight slip, still sounding confident. After that I took LNER to Doncaster and Northern to Swinton (South Yorkshire) which allowed me to get ahead of 7029 during her water stop at Pontefract Baghill. By Swinton she’d picked up a fair bit of speed and is seen racing through with a blast on the whistle! After this I watched England miraculously win against Switzerland on penalties in their Euro 2024 Quarter Final clash, before travelling into Sheffield to catch the 20:01 EMR train for Derby. Shoutout to the guard on EMR who let me take a seat in first class due to a ticket mixup! Unfortunately the timetable didn't allow me to move south from Derby for another 40 minutes, meaning I didn't get an arrival shot at New Street, however I did get some stills and I saw her getting dragged out by the diesel.
Thanks as ever to all who made this possible, to my family, NR, GC, LNER, Northern, EMR, XC, VT and of course 7029 and her crew! I'd like to dedicate this video to the memory of my late grandfather who, despite being an LNER man, grew up seeing steam on the ECML and would be delighted to know it still happens quite often, and who rests in a place overlooking the ECML near his home in North Yorkshire. I hope you enjoy this video as I did!

Well done Dan and thanks for sharing the memory of your Grandad.... I bet he would never have imagined a Castle on his ECML though. You were lucky getting back to NS for the final clip as her early running was curtailed by Coleshill so had to hang about a bit myself at WO.
