Sensational to see the development of these technologies! I have GLAUCOMA and I suffer absurdly with the light from the monitors, mainly. I was having so much difficulty and pain in my eyes that I almost abandoned 3 years of study for the civil service exam, my salvation was a 10-inch kindle (kindle scribe) that ended my pain in my eyes! I recommend it to everyone who has glaucoma and suffers from pain while reading due to excessive dryness caused by the eye drops. I hope to see these technologies in monitors. I can't wait to be able to test a tablet with this Technology, the kindle is good but it has limited functions, a computer and a professional monitor with these functions is really a dream.
Hi, amazing to hear that something like this has helped you with you condition! TCL are definitely on the right track and will surely be benefiting those who suffer from such conditions. They recently announced a whole bunch of phones and displays with their NXTPAPER technology, excited to see what the have coming up!
Bang for the buck!!! TCL phones are quite good at providing what users actually need thereby cutting out the unnecessary fat and saving on costs. Great product. My next one will surely be a TCL.
I love matte displays . I have a back up phone ( iPhone SE 3) with matte screen protector on it and must say it gives a nice viewing experience. Easy on the eyes, screen visible and clear during bright lighting conditions, no glare. Outdoors the matte screen is probably as clear to see ss my android phone with a bright display ( well over 1000+ nits)
Bought this phone (in blue) for the matte screen as I suffer chronic migraine. Being a clumsy sod, I'm worried about dropping it or damaging the screen. A distinct lack of clear protective covers and no T-Pen in the UK is concerning. I wonder how long the screen will last without being scratched useless? Can anyone give me some peace of mind about how durable the phone is?
Hi Stephen, I’ve had the same gripes to be honest, as far as I am aware matte screens are a mixed bag when it comes to scratch resistance, some being good some being bad, I would test this on my unit but am afraid of actually damaging it! I’m not quite sure if a screen protector can actually be applied on top of a matte screen? It is quite frustrating that there are hardly any options for protection at the moment, I have seen a few cases on Amazon but very limited options! Maybe overtime there will be more products introduced?
@@michaelfox6643 hi. Sorry to hear about your migraine. I wouldn't wish this condition on my worst enemy. As you know migraine is complex and can be affected by many different factors. However, I have 2 other phones, Xiaomi and Samsung, the 40 NXTPAPER is now my main phone. It's still early days but I can say the screen is much easier on my eyes and head. I do a lot of video and audio editing along with reading on my phones and can do this on the NXTPAPER with ease, knowing my eyes won't be painful or watery and it won't trigger my migraine, even though my screen time runs into hours and is often under overhead artificial light. Viewing angles aren't as sharp as with an Oled screen but that's only a minor gripe. Daylight (not that there's much in Northern Ireland) also causes little to no problems as the screen still stays very clear . This is NOT a glorified matte screen protector, it's a whole new, bright, colourful, experience that my eyes actually love. I do still have migraine but I'm convinced that has nothing to do with this phone but down to my other triggers. I would recommend this phone as long as you're not going to be playing games, which I'm not. Take care of yourself and have a good and relatively pain free holiday season.
@@typicaltechlad hello. I wanted to wait a few weeks before replying. I contacted TCL themselves and they pretty much told me what we already know, we're not to put a screen protector on the phone, the case and T-Pen are not available in the UK but other cases are available online. I bought a plain black case on Amazon and then found the official TCL case with T-Pen on Amazon for £30. Typical! I bought it as well. It's now £25 but the price fluctuates. I'm still hoping a clear case appears at some point as I do love that blue casing. I'm extremely careful with the screen and it's standing up well to a lot of use so far. I'm not stuffing it in my jeans pocket just yet and I do NOT want you abusing yours just to see how much abuse it can take. Thank you for the great video and your channel. Have a great holiday season.

You can get similar effect placing matte screen protection glass on regular phone. I have used it in the past and you get almost no reflecrion and it is very comfortable for eyes.
Absolutely right, the NXTPAPER technology does have slight advantages in that it replicates an e-ink display a bit better and has specific UI built to enhance that experience, but with a screen protector that way you effectively have the option to have matte or not, I personally use a matte screen protector myself, done a video recently on a really good tempered glass matte screen protector by TAC, check it out!
That is a good point and I haven’t personally tested it with a screen protector so not sure what the adherence would be on a matte display, looking around on Google seems there are limited options for screen protectors
I'd probably use a book /wallet phone case. I use one of these on my curved display android phone as screen protectors were a nightmare to find and put on
Thanks for making this video. I'm looking for a phone with the display helping me reduce eye's soreness. Does this TCL phone work? In my country, TCL don't setup display booth for in person experience 😢
You’re welcome. Although I personally have never suffered from eye soreness when using any screen, TCL have built in various technologies to help reduce such strain, such as low blue light, anti-glare, eye-friendly colour temperature and soft light (at night) the combination of these, TCL believe, will ultimately help reduce any strain or soreness
Why do you even do a review for a phone that is obviously ain't at reading experience without even opening a web browser to see how we can read on this thing or a PDF to see how we can read of this thing or the Kindle application
Hi, thanks for the feedback, still learning on how to execute the best reviews and the examples you have provided would have been very useful, I should have included those, apologies, thank you though, will keep things like that in mind moving forward with reviews 👍
If this is a reflective display I would assume it gets much brighter than 450 nits when used outside in sunny conditions. I am confused, the 450nits brightness refers to indoors environments using a front light built in the phone? How does the display perform outdoors compared to an OLED display?
Hi, the display is a traditional LCD panel so behaves the same as any other LCD panel. The peak brightness is 450 nits indoors and outdoors. I found outside viewing was okay but in direct sunlight hitting the screen it was difficult to see the screen due to the matte display diffusing the light across the panel and causing a hazy look
Hi, I personally think the 40 NXTPAPER is better, it has a better screen, slightly larger battery, faster charging (33W) and higher resolution front camera. The NXTPAPER 5G has a slightly better processor (Dimensity 6020)
Hi, I have researched this and it seems TCL had promised 2 OS updates (Android 12 & 13) for this device, however it seems that other users have only been able to update to Android 12 so far. Have you checked on your phone for any available updates?
can it replace a kindle in terms of strain on my eyes? kindle literally causes minimum eye strain and can this phone do it? Also awesome video, liked :)
Hi, thank you 🤩. Although this isn’t actually an e ink display and does a good job emulating such a display effectively it’s an lcd display with a matte covering built in, which in itself lessens eye strain due to cutting out glare and reflections. So I would say in my use it definitely did help with that and the low blue light certification also helps. So although not as good as e ink itself, still a good substitute
@@typicaltechlad @typicaltechlad It is great to know then , so if i prioritize reducing the strain on my eyes more, this would be better than most oled screened devices out there, Thats still a pretty sweet deal id say!
Hi, I’m not entirely sure of US availability. TCL did state they were to be releasing the phones there but did not provide a release date unfortunately. Might be worth reaching out to them through one of their socials.
Hi, is there any display shield please? Isn´t it shiny? I am very curious about this. Because the display is dim. That is why we want this phone. But when I apply a shield won´t I cancel the whole effect with the dim display then?? All of the display shields I know are shiny....
Oh sorry, I see this has been discussed little bit lower in the comments. So there is no cover shield, right? And therefore a risk of damaging the display :(
Hi, yeah that’s the problem here, it’s a matte screen so if you applied a clear glass screen protector that would defeat the whole purpose of the phone and if you applied a matte screen protector that would, like you said, dim the display and double the ‘matte rainbowing’ effect. So I’m not sure what the solution here is lol. Unless TCL come out with something specially designed for this phone?
Thank you! I must say that this came to my mind yesterday and as I can se now that is the real problem here. Such a shame because I would definitely buy it, I like it. @@typicaltechlad
The phone is nice looking but I would not it because of the old hardware that's the reason it's so slow I don't know why they would use older hardware when there is better options to choose from.
