A musical marriage made in heaven, Marcus and Miles. Some of Mile's best modern work was done via Marcus. Marcus' funk blended perfectly with Mile's classic jazz. They bridge the gap between pure jazz, smooth jazz.,and modern music. Miles was my hero. His message, listen to everything, and discover the art for yourself. Tutu is perfection in musical form. Watch these giants and you will dig it. If you love music, you will get it. Peace out.
Miles, what a man indeed, his dress, his trumpet and of course his music for each decade is simply as eternal as the grass. I got to see him only once in Chicago's Grant Park during the summer of 1990, oh what a concert, I was simply mesmerize from the very first note to the last one 💔💯.
This was one of the best music shows (Night Music with David Sanborn) that ever came on TV. I use to set my clock to watch it, so that I wouldn't miss it.
Without Marcus Miller ( Yeah the bass guitar player that doesn't show off despite the fact he wrote and produced this album ), Tutu wouldn't exist. I love this album because of the incredible beast funky riffs that this man is capable to create, play and SHARE which is what it's all about: SHARE MUSIC AND LOVE WITH THE UNIVERSE.
Miles had two important producers and arrangers Gil Evans and Marcus Miller. There was also Aura with Palle Mikkelborg, It was these relationships that formed his amazing music
Yeah the tone he's getting thru the harmon is out of this world. From 2.24 the conversation is sheer magic ... Miles' ideas just flow on endlessly. Just incredible how he 'reinvented himself' and came up with a whole new style with different riffs ...
Absolutely tremendous.. Elite hip pioneer. Miles brought a whole new level to Jazz, Bebp and moved with the times.. He was the truest person i ever saw.. No fake in Miles.. He took performing to another level..
A great track. Miles always gives space to others but never lets their egos take over. He keeps a very tight reign but inspires the musicians around him to excel. Almost every musician I admire has played with miles at some time: Very strange? Miles is an enigma.
I saw Miles Davis in Nyc chilling at a bar lounge back in the early 80s then later on at the Hollywood bowl playing this beautiful song!! No one is discounting Marcus Miller‘s abilities, but there’s no song without Miles Davis!
Robert Irving III played with me on gig in the 1990's after Miles died. He told me quite a bit about him. Robert was the music/band director. Miles paid the Musicians extra money not to do solos during rehearsals. Robert told me Miles would have a list and totally deviate the set. Paradox. I also played with Pete Cosey and Warren Bingham guitarists 🎸 for Miles too. All from Chicago. I could almost write a book. Ricky Wellman was an incredible 👏🏾 drummer 🥁 was the perfect pocket with Don Alias. Miles, Ricky, , and superb percussionist Don Alias are unfortunately deceased. Thank God for videos and audio recordings. 🙏🏽
Kids today... Pay attention.. Miles Davis.. Legondary artist who paved the way for you.. it wont hurt to listen to "REAL" music!!" This is just awsome!
Tutu was one of the best compositions of Miles' last period. Great performance, man, great. Miles' voice on the horn is unmatched. He was a Black Prince sent to Earth to bring us tales from the other side of the Universe. Wow. I am speechless.
FOLEY...Man....Ive played this video literally 100's of times...the subtleties thruout r dynamic* but that section during & after Sanborns solo ...then ur solo gives ridiculous goosebumps the size of grapes!! The note selection & emotion literally brings tears* Just watching u & Marcus & Ricky 2gether is 2 much!! BIG RESPECT!! 👊👊
I'm 25 and listen to this in wonder.. I started with sinatra... then moved on to count basie, duke ellington, learned of Dizzy gillespie, charlie parker, then learned about monk, miles and coltrane. It's been an adventure for me... and now i'm here, in the 90's listening to what they have now. I've spent 8 years of miles listening through as much jazz as I can
Que dire de Miles...Sinon qu'il est un pur génie ...Pour lui "une" seule note est remplie de tellement de choses ...Ici avec cette équipe,on est dans la perfection totale !
I grew up listening to Miles. I saw him in person in the early 80's. He was as electric as I thought he would be. At that time he was playing with his back to the audience, don't understand the rationale, but I didn't care. He was absolutely fabulous. I knew all of his old stuff, which he refused to play, I was just in awe, seeing Miles. It was awesome. Something I'll never forget.
that guy played in the verve record jazzmasters hall of fame in carnegie hall. alongwith some other genusses like omar hakim, jeff lorber, herbe hancock, etc. go check it out.
saw him open with this at the westbury music fair. I think my soul almost left my body - then. Breathless. Playing with the band on that rotating stage was magical. Miss you Miles... :- (.........
I have heard this track so many times, but isn't it amazing to actually see them playing. Live music is so much more exiting than studio recordings. I also really love to hear these pieces end properly rather than just fade out!!! (fading out is one of my pet hates).
Went to see this tour two nights running in the south of france in the eighties, absolutely awesome, true miles was a little past his sell by date but just to see the man in action and the power he has over the other musicians is truly to see a sorcerer in action, we`ll never forget you MILES
What garbage to one is treasure for another. This is my favorite Miles song and I've heard them all so it's all a matter of taste. This album made huge riffs in the jazz world when it was released. There was no middle growned the jazz world was devided. Half hated it and the other half called it genius. Regardless at the end of the day Miles took home the Grammy. All I can say is that across the board all musicians would kill to sound half as good or be half as talented and inovative.
I share with my students about real musicianship - young marcus miller, miles davis, david sanborn, other guitarist, and the percussionist excellent from start to finish
MILES - Kenny Garrett ( flute) - Joe "Foley" Mc Creary (g) - Adam Holzman (Keyb) Marcus Miller (bass) - David Sanborn (as) - Ricky Wellman (drums) - Don Alias (perc)
Holy crap that bass line is awesome. I love the pop to to this composition. Proves that Miles Davis was still brilliant even when he was an old man. This ain't no elevator jazz. This JAMS. 5 stars. Thanks for posting.
The mathematical formula by which men reason does not a musical universe make. How cocky and pompous can we be to assume that because we attempt to structure and name all we encounter... "it" belongs to us. One lifetime has never been enough to fully grasp a complete understanding of music's elusive power over our souls. I have aspired to be among the ranks of those humble few who come damn close, and I am grateful to the creator for artist like this who illuminate my spiritual path. Peace.
Thanks for the upload. I absolutely loved this " Night Music " show when it was on. And of course, this version of Tutu just. . .flat. . .out. . .KILLS!
Exactly. I saw Miles with this band in 1989, Manchester UK. I've been to more gigs than I can count since then, all kinds of music, from massive artists to little pub gigs, and I have NEVER seen or heard anything to match that one night with Miles. If they can ever clone dead famous people, they should start with Sir Miles Davis.
Sent this to my old man [a big jazz fan - 1920s to early 1930s his favourite era], with the question: "Do you rate this guy?".... His answer was basically: "Legend. Mostly just heard his stuff, rarely seen footage of him. And CRIKEY he's in good nick! Looks much younger than I expected".... Heh. Time to give dad a heads-up, bless him, regarding "published on" RUclips date ≠ "recording date".... A rudimentary Googling tells me this performance happened late 1989, which would have Mr Davis being 63 years old.... Can any of you boffins confirm / dispute? Cheers.
Night Music was one of the best TV shows at all time. It featured a host of musical guests and a killing house band. This particular excerpt was taken from a very special night. We got Miles interviewed by Marcus Miller and Djavan too. Tks for posting!
By now he had done all he wanted to do with his music and instrument. The lesson is to look within yourself and express without copying, anyone. What an era!!
I always thought it was a guitar with low sounding strings but according to wikipedia "With his custom-made Blue Marble bass, tuned nearly an octave higher than a standard bass guitar and processed through various effects, Foley was able to create the illusion of a lead guitarist."
David Sanborn is in this segment because it is his show"Night Music",probably one of the best music shows ever on TV. Some other great musicians are also in this clip: Marcus Miller, Kenny Garrett and on percussion, the late, great Don Alias.
has this style of music become cool again yet? If and when it does, pl let me know, thanks ! (& yes, Miles still sounds dope, regardless of what the band is doing?!)
It was like....four years ago or something like that. I heard this song and I fell in love with the genre. Here I am, years and years later and now Im a huge lover of the jazz music.
From somebody who only knows good music when he hears it: I love reading the comments from musicians. I know nothing of music myself except to know that I like it and to see some of the more technical comments is cool-keep 'em coming!
i understand but cant fully agree, Jazz, Funk and Rock and my three most favourite genres and the way he combines them is pure genius, and can and do listen to Tutu all day, the way the Bass solo comes in straight after the sax is just so electric, gives me shivers everytime
its so great to hear musicians play what they feel, not what people want to "dance" to. Love the groove on this one. thanks for the post...and thanks Miles.

Miles is eternal! There is too much talent on this stage to believe... simply amazing!!

David Sanborn shines on the Alto sax and steals the show for sure!
Love the trade-offs between The Trumpet and The Flute.
Yeah the tone he's getting thru the harmon is out of this world. From 2.24 the conversation is sheer magic ... Miles' ideas just flow on endlessly.
Just incredible how he 'reinvented himself' and came up with a whole new style with different riffs ...
Miles was the "MASTER OF COOL!!" This is one of my fave from Miles, and of course they're OTHERS as well!! Love TuTu!!!
I done let this video play on repeat for 20 minutes so far. I love this. It's everything I love about live music.
My favorite David Sanborn solo. Must have heard it a hundred times!
+syncoke Same here : Dave Sanborn at his finest ;)

¡Great! With Don Alias again.
i love that one!

Such an incredible feeling when he comes in!
One of a kind! I really miss Miles and his contribution to the music scene!
One of the greatest trumpeters and innovators. Left us a few years ago.
Miles, Marcus, Kenny, Sanborn, Mac...Love this song....
This feels like the whole 80's concentrated into one video
Miles is so cool, even now the music is so awesome, I can't even wrap my brain around it.
What a legend. There will never be anyone else like him.

Written by Marcus, this is Miles Davis. In concert Kenny Garrett and Foley took this to another level. RIP Miles...

I miss miles davis times, from the 90's , i miss it so much, i want go back ...
The master at work. Miles Davis was great. I still love his music.

Miles siempre genial!
The recording on the album is awesome, but hearing this live.....AMAZING!!!
I share with my students about real musicianship - young marcus miller, miles davis, david sanborn, other guitarist, and the percussionist excellent from start to finish
the "other guitarist" is another bass =)
Foley is the name!
@@rudamachoo actually Joseph McCreary but yes, went by Foley. He is excellent!
A terrific post...!!
Miles Davis and friends at the top of their game...
So good to see this live performance...!!

Foley is playing lead bass, not guitar.
There is some magic in this performance

Probably my favorite Miles Davis song!!
Flat out cool!
World class talent here for sure!! I have the original CD of this album. Hypnotizing!!
The drummer? Perfect !
I'd be scared to death with that much talent in front of my kit......
This was the very first video I looked up on RUclips back in like 06' or 05'. Amazing
that is an alto sax ;), he is David Sanborn
Miles Davis is the king of jazz, no maters ehat anyone says. He'll always be rememberd as the best of the best ! :)
3:46 classic
You're correct man! what a powerful slide in, first time heard, I thought it's a simply best sax sound ever pulled
In 1987! Mark gave me a cassette tape of Tutu in Okura Hotel in Amsterdam. Thanks Mark!
The percussion guy.
Who is the percussionist? Is Don alias?

This is excellent. But remember that Marcus Miller composed this track. Don't credit just Miles alone.
@@TheRawrevelations Marcus Miller is the sole composer of Tutu.
Same thing for his second great quintet, the tracks composed by him in the five SGQ albums are just four: Agitation, Circle, Stuff and Country Son.
@@TheRawrevelations Neither Miles nor Miller were producers. They don't fill that role.
Slash606 Actually Marcus Miller has produced my albums... including this one.

Marcus and Miles make a great combo and that bass solo at the end is so tasty.
OMG I just discover THIS
the "yeah!" popping out of the audience on the final accent of the song is just amazing
3:17 that line woow
what a fabulous show this was...he introduced so many new and unique artists

Absolutely great. Wakes nice reminisciences of hearing Miles playing at Nyon Festival around year 1986.
This music came from the same place that Mozart got it. "Space" This is how a band is to play.
