The Beethoven of modern jazz - I think there are many parallels: both men's exploration of new forms (or reworkings of older formats) and new sounds, the dynamic power of their work, the revolutionary impact they had in creating new styles and idioms, their constant struggle to get their music heard but also to get some decent economic return on it (Beethoven struggled with publishers and conductors, Miles with his record label people) - and their ability to engage with the very building blocks of music and test their relationships.
I saw this version of Miles' band within what must have been days or weeks of this gig, at the Manchester Apollo, England. Travelled all the way down from Scotland, by bus. It was worth it. Incredible gig.
Yes - if you watch the entire dvd (Miles in Paris, filmed in early November '89) you can tell he is feeling his bodily ailments. It's visible at some points that he has some difficulties moving around, and Kenny takes more solos than Miles - but he is clearly sharp and in command all the time. Wonderful dvd!
A masterful concert: brilliantly constructed spacing, pared down melodies, rhythmic inventions at every turn through the marvelous soloing of each musician; staging brings attention to each soloist as though they had become Shakespearean actors reciting the notes from Mount Olympus; with Miles bringing the spiritual elements of the Blues and Post-Bop Swing( Kelly, Chambers, and Cobb) to the stage. One of his great live performances that will forever be enjoyed and studied in awe.
My 1st Miles CD was DoBop. The posthumous one. The two arias, at beginning and end hooked me! I have several of his works now. My respect grows for the man every time I hear him!
Wow😮 This just blows you away what a Amazon performance by these Musicans. Miles your a cut above the rest Why, Why, Why, tell them it's Human Nature ❤😊.
Oh yes, I've wqtched this brilliant, lyrical take so many times - and the entire dvd too! Of course, the title really is Human Nature, but I figure there was some need to lead the bots astray... ;) Absolutely beuatiful, this to me is THE defining version of Miles' and band's interpretation of the song - and they played it hundreds of times during his last five or six years!
I saw Miles Davis twice in concert and I think this was during the concert at La Grande Halle De La Villette, if so, I was there. Thank you for posting this video, this artist was a legend! 🙏😉
It's at le Zénith in Paris, early November 1989 (a few nights before the opening of the Berlin Wall, something I find very symbolic (this track is about longing and liberation, or about growing towards a new level). The opening track on the outstanding Miles in Paris live dvd.
Morocco 1960s Marrakech in the main square Mr. Miles Davis with Juliette Greco! Just another tourist? No not until the broadcast by Marie France Rabat Francais: The Chopin of Jazz is in Marrakech today the one and only Mr. Miles Davis! That blew me up!

in case you dont understand the magnitude of this: you know how good of a Pop act you have to be for a jazz musician of this caliber to cover your record lmao

This surely is a way to transport a fan to heaven! Miles Davis lives forever through his music.
Miles is a pure jazz innovator. To see him mentor these younger musicians is AWSOME!

I think I was also at that Manchester gig. Miles was in superb form, as was Kenny Garrett.

It originally came out as a LaserDisc. I think it also came out as a DVD later.
