    definitely a yung lean year. it's gonna be reminiscent of his comeup, not the same aesthetics but the same vibe of an artist that exists on and because of the internet

    i think the main issue w pheobe’s post-punisher output is that she’s basically become the go-to indie artist to feature on non-indie music and her filling that role actively destroys genuine interest in her

    agree on american/alt-country creeping its way into the pop realm. i think moody minimalism and jack antonoff are out, and there’s def Western dances tiktok will love

    Loved the vid, havn't seen anybody else do this kinda video recap/prediction. And most of the takes are real good.
    Side note: Speaking of actually interesting and artfully done hyperpop, have you heard the most recent dltzk LP Frailty? It crept its way into my Top 10 list right at the end of the year and I'm really enjoying the style. Seems like something you might like!

    I'm really trying to understand the appeal of hyperpop. If it is satirizing modern pop music, why is it so popular now and how do people tolerate it if it's obnoxious on purpose. Genuine question. No hate.

    • @mattlorence4854
      @mattlorence4854  2 года назад +6

      Great question. The fact that hyperpop is 'popular' is both recent and an extremely relative statement. Hyperpop is absolutely massive in the underground, but even it's largest figures like Charli XCX really don't have a presence on the top of the charts. They feel really big on certain online circles, but the average "hyperpop" track isn't really making waves in the mainstream (yet). To answer your question about how satire can be popular, I think that the world "satirical" is one that's useful but not entirely accurate. Early hyperpop (actually "PC Music") creators had a huge adoration for Pop (the genre not the description) music and thought the genre could be brought even further using modern electronic production technologies and other new-age art creation tools like AI. They poked fun at Pop music by emphasizing parts of it that people didn't like: hyper-consumerism and sexuality, overreliance on autotune and digital production and otherwise vapid themes and lyrics. They took these elements up to 11 to both explore the possible fringes of the genre and make fun of the mainstream version. This has become popular because, well, it's still pop music. The same sticky choruses and catchy lyrics are here, but they're accompanied by styles of music popular in the underground (bubblegum bass, trap rap etc). While the most purist hyperpop may feel inaccessible, it was able to find an audience because of it's interesting combination of genres. Additionally, the presence of LGBTQ+ artists made hyperpop something of a safe space for people with those identities and made a really strong community surrounding the work. Almost all of these characteristics are stripped from the more toned down and mainstream Spotify-created "Hyperpop" genre which is the kind I'm speaking about in this video. The term itself was actually coined by the spotify playlist and not artists in the scene - that's a whole other discussion though.
      In terms of how people enjoy hyperpop if it's obnoxious: the same way they enjoy genres like black metal or crunk rap or dubstep or any number of loud, in-your-face genres. A lot of people like those sounds and again "obnoxious" is a I use a lot of hyperpop but not in a derogatory way. Being obnoxious or intentionally loud and energetic isn't always a bad thing, and a lot of people connected with a kind of music that represented their alternative interests or non-mainstream identities with the braggadocios attitude that regular pop music had for another crowd. Hope that clears it up, but I've got a video about "Internet music" on my channel that goes a bit more in detail about some of the appeals of this music. Thanks for the comment!

      @@mattlorence4854 Really appreciate the response + very comprehensive write up. I only ask because I've heard bits and pieces from friends and I don't want to rule the genre out entirely even though I don't really understand the appeal just yet. I've been a fan of Bladee and Lean for a number of years now so I understand not liking an artist the first go around.

      to me, liking hyperpop is a side effect of liking bedroom music. i mostly like music made by teenagers on a computer because it's like "damn ok, I could do that"
      just so happens a lot of people are doing hyperpop rn
