Let me clarify what happened. Dinner was supposed to be with Peter, Roger, and Don. However, Herb asked Roger not to include Pete, as he wanted to clear things up with Don. Then Don told Roger that Marie was in town, and Roger insisted on including her. At the last minute, Roger had to attend to an urgent matter with Chevron and was unable to join the dinner.

As someone who works in advertising design in-house, I despise it when a client or coworker wants someone to “come in and check my work” that isn’t my boss or on the design team. It really is nefarious and makes you curious what they will do in the future. Don did the right thing. Herb was going to make SCDP turn into a laughing stock with Borax-style copy.

@@michael7264 If you're not happy with the work someone is doing, then by all means fire them and get someone else, but the point of this scene is when you expect someone to attach their own professional name and reputation to something, then it has to come up to their standard of quality as well as your own. Don is right here, Herb had every right to go with the flyer guy if he liked his work better, SCDP had just as much right to decline to have their firm's name associated with work that wasn't actually being produced by them and may do very really damage to their reputation when it's not up to scratch.
The part I think people don't get is that Don realizes the relationship is over either way. Herb is never going to respect or accept the work he hired them to do, so they either accept that and move on or have someone else's work out their potentially stinking up their firm's good name, and even then, Herb would probably find other things to continue to be upset about.

Campbell tells Don Herb acted that way, because how Don gave the speech that Herb wanted Don to give to the directors of Jaguar (remember, Herb wanted Don to pitch Herbs idea as if it were Don´s, and Don made it sound stupid, and so the directors didnt have it). Don was tired that Herb always wanted to be on top (literally and metaphorically), and Don didnt like it. By letting Joan sleep with Herb, SCDP basically was a hostage of Herb. Don hated that. He didnt like being at the top. So he basically fired Jaguar. Joan even said it: "If I had Herb on top of me, why could you?" Hate Don in this scene.
