Jeff Kiesel sat down recently for a long phone conversation to discuss a cease and desist letter his company Kiesel Guitars (also Carvin Guitars) had received from Gibson. In this interview, Jeff pulls no punches in his assessment of the situation and vows to fight Gibson in court, if need be.

My JB200C is the best guitar I ever bought, QC was amazing, played in tune straight out of the box, flawless. And I have more than 20 high quality guitars, I know what I am talking about. And my Carvin V220 from 1986 is also up there as well!!! And my Carvin Bass as well!!! I really love my Gibson Les Paul 59 as well (had to dig around for a quality one though), BUT...Gibson is just embarrassing themselves with this...AGAIN!!!

I'm not liking Gibson right about now. That V guitar he had look like a Jackson maybe they invented it before Jackson. I have a Jackson and then I don't like that big wing it only has one little ding in it. But sitting down to play is not easy at all. My friend was over and I got out my Hohner osc guitar only cost me $160 and it is quality. The sound is amazing if you put better pickups it might be even better. I never even heard of Tesla pickups. Gibson is making a big mistake they're pushing away customers. If they went bankrupt I guess they're not doing something right. I wonder if it's something to do with our government they went after the wood in 2012 I think they didn't go after other people. I cannot believe they did that get down on the ground you got wood hold it right there WTF? Imagine if you were working there that day. They rated Gibson with guns drawn

What pisses me off with Gibson is they take a few great steps forward and then they keep shooting themselves in the ass. I sold all my Gibsons. My single cuts are Handmade and are different than the LP's. Won't buy another Gibson because of their quality issues but now compounded with these lawsuits, the C&C letters and their work with Gabriel from Echo Park who is a snake.

Gibson has a great history which is what they trade on. They haven’t produced any successful innovation in decades and they have at best mediocre quality control. Their company management is a rollercoaster of changing senior execs and financial problems. Gibson can’t define why a Gibson is better than a competitors product (excep for nostalgia). Humbuckers were patented (PAF= "Patent Applied For") not trademarked. Different law. Patents run (expire). BTW: In 1981, DiMarzio trademarked the appearance of uncovered PAF style humbuckers featuring two cream-colored bobbin pickups. That combo was originally seen on Gibson Les Paul Burst guitars when some players removed the covers. (Think Jimmy Page's #2 guitar) But as DiMarzio now holds the trademark, since 1981 no one but Dimarzio can manufacture double cream humbucker pick-ups. And Dimarzio goes after anyone who infringes on their trademark.

All they have to do is:
a). fix their infamously shitty QC
b). introduce some new affordable model series for modern players (7string models, contoured neck heels,ss-frets,modern bridges like Evertune,Hipshot Contour tremolos etc. modern pickups like Fishman Fluence,BKP etc.)
c). make an affordable,Made in USA series, with stripped down features, that doesn´t look like crap like most of their Studios do, similar to what PRS has done with their S2 line
d). make an affordable Made in USA traditional series, similar to the PRS S2 line, for the vintage purists

If Gibson is running so low on money, blowing it on dubious legal ventures prob. isn't the smartest move. I doubt they *actually* intend to follow through, as they just have to know they dont have a legal leg to stand on.
I think the broadness and quality of the Asian import market has just decimated the mass-produced corporatized entry level products in NA. Gibson seems like they're throwing a tantrum against American makers because of how badly they're getting beat by the Asian imports.

The old Gibsons were great but idk about the new ones. We had several new gibsons on the workshop and they really dont sound and feel good for the price. $1000 nowadays can get you a really Really good guitar. Gibson made one before Bigsby did. The Bigsby model was the first in a solid body though. Gretsch was selling their single cut which is almost identical to the Les Paul starting in like 1952 I believe it was, 54? somewhere in there. So why Gibson didn't sue them then is beyond me. I just think Gibson is trying to stop any new makers from joining in on the shape copying. I mean come on, they have to know they will lose this case against Kiesel! I think what might hurt Kiesel is the use of the V in their name. Gibson can show that by using this name they were obviously trying to lure people in with it. I don't think any jury would find Kiesel guilty of copyright infringement. I love Gibson guitars and I would not find in their favor in ANY of these recent law suits, mainly because they waited too long to try them in court. If Dean was a brand new company and was coming out with the models Gibson is suing them over, yes, I would find in favor of Gibson. But now? Nope no way, they waited far too long.

So dude at Kiesel is saying his "Ultra V" has no resemblance to Gibson's yet has "V" in the name? Come on man??? Obviously it's not a complete copy but I bet had Gibson not made the Flying V in 1958 (not 1986) there is no way his grand father or any other "not an exact copy" company would have made that. I think it's sad that Gibson (or Fender, Rickenbacher, PRS...ect) has been around forever and are being bled dry because of these brands that are making knock offs (you can call them "inspired by" all you want but they might as well be made in china copies). This is what put these companies in jeopardy in the first place, Asian ripoffs. The only thing that has changed now is that it has now evolved from Asia to the entire world making ripoffs. I give kudos to all the guitar manufacturers that make totally original designs, fuck all these unoriginal ripoffs!!! I wonder what Jeff would say if a company like Chapman (haha!!! Better not get him involved or I'll get sued) started marketing an "Ultra ChapV " that in turn started challenging his sales of the Ultra V? I bet he would change his tune!!! If I remember right the performers have to PAY to preform the hafltime show too so maybe Shakira (I literally have no idea who that is) was just trying to make some money back on the deal by taking a Gibson sponsorship?

Hey brad, I was wondering if you might be of any help on this one. I have a Carvin V3 100watt amp, and like an idiot I managed to power it up with no load connected... You know how you have a room full of gear, and the mess of cables turns into a spaghetti monster? Well, turns out I wasn't plugged into a cab, just a loose cable that wasn't being used. So I'm messing around trying to figure out why I have no sound and I get this clicking noise coming from my amp, I shut it down to investigate and realize my mistake. Alas, my amp is now dead, power still works, but I get no sound. I tried swapping the power tubes out but get the same results. I'm pretty sure I cooked the output transformer, and here lies the problem. I haven't been able to find anything that matches the part number on it. It's got 3 lines of numbers and letters but nothing comes up as a match on google. Any advice you could give would be much appreciated. Here's the info from the transformer,

Like I've said before with the Dean shakedown, Gibson is trying to use it's relative size in the industry to intimidate smaller builders into signing licensing agreements on certain model shapes in order to create a passive revenue stream where they have no investment other than legal fees. Smaller builders incur all costs of production while Gibson gets a cut in perpetuity. It's been done in other industries.

Hi Brad, I really enjoy your channel, I’ve learnt a lot from watching your vids and you make me chuckle too….
I know this is off topic but...
I’ve got a problem with neck pocket cracks appearing on my Eric Clapton signature Strat… (which I’ve owned from new since 1999). I’ve looked at a number of RUclipss on this subject and some people are saying that this is a common problem and just likely to be cracks in the paint work. More worryingly, I saw a video that was saying that it’s more likely to be cracks in the wood. What’s your take on this? Without stating the obvious until the neck is taken off I won’t really know
Just to add… A few years ago I did drop it, it landed on a hard floor headstock first, apart from a dent in the headstock there weren't any noticeable cracks then…. The cracks have only recently appeared and they are growing. The guitar still plays great and there’s no movement in the neck.
    Cheers Stew, from the UK

Just a note. I used to work for a major aircraft manufacturer, loved the job BTW. I got hurt on the job in 1991. I was sent to a another "shop". (They had us do janitorial work, etc., while still getting our regular pay. Could've been great PR, for them as well) They decided around Christmas that year, if we had any other skills in aircraft, to submit a resume. I had extensive experience, everything from avionics, to field service mods. (3 page resume). After Christmas they changed their minds, said if we couldn't go back to our old job, they were going to lay us off. Well I decided to have surgery to keep my job, bad move. Any way, after my lay off, (which turned out to be NOT a lay off) I got a lawyer. That company paid their lawyers $450K to fight my case, this state had a $100K MAX award, for Work Comp. They offered me $47.5K to settle, I accepted. Then they pulled that offer! The Judge was insensed! So I got the MAX, but it was nickel & dimed over a 5 yr period. I'm thinking Gibson's lawyers are doing what those lawyers did. Padding their pockets with cash, while dragging cases out to the bitter end.(they appealed up to the state supreme court too). Carvin/Kiesal (sp?) make good guitars & basses. My former bassist had a Carvin bass & combo bass amp. It sounded fabulous! (We were both die hard Fender guys). Gibson is being ripped off by their attys IMO. Of course their 335 is my dream machine, but I should've bought one back in the 70s before they were $3K.

Years from now when Gibson has a new CEO... This era of Gibson will be known as Curleigh Lawsuit Era

My money’s on the “Play Authentic Era”. Pretty much captures it all.

Damn. I’m not even looking to get a new bass but Kiesel’s attitude towards Gibson’s dickery makes me want to buy one from them.

Hell I just sold my two Gibson once I got my first Aries 6 and Kiesel did an amazing job. I left Gibson and now have all my guitars made through them. Hell I’ve got another one already being built. Fight this ignorance you got my support.
