I came across this video earlier this week because we were concerned about our dove, Molly, as she was limping a little around her cage, wouldn't perch, and most noticeably, had stopped cooing. She turned 21 this year, and we've always kept her in a large cage my father built, indoors. Years ago, she clipped her foot against a ceiling fan. We took her to a vet, who said the injury was minor, but the xrays told us Molly is actually a HE, but we still always used feminine pronouns in reference to her. Over the past few years, she began limping, as the vet said would likely happen. But otherwise, she's been happy, vocal (cooing, "laughing," bowing) and affectionate. When she grew quiet recently, and didn't seem well, I checked with a vet who said to wait another day, but as long as she had her appetite and was drinking water, not to be too concerned. Her behavior was probably due to age, and the aches of the old injury. Thankfully, she's back to perching and cooing her heart out.
I've had my ring neck dove for almost 18 years. I've had him since he was about a month old. He doesn't play, coo or laugh a lot like he used to, but he's still hanging on in there ☺💗
That's impressive. Your obviously are taking good care of your dove for it to live that long. Have you always had just the one dove or did it have a cage mate at one time. Just curious. Thanks for sharing.
The pet shop we bought Bob went out of business in 1989. My wife bought Bob 2 or 3 years before they closed. It is Dec of 2024. What, 36 years and still cooing, he doesn't bow anymore. He doesn't fly very well, kind of flutters, but still Ha Ha's when he lands. I am over 70 and think he may be at my funeral. We hold him a lot and soon as he gets warm he sleeps. He sleeps a lot. Edit: I have no proof of the age of this bird. When we go camping we take him with us. He is free to fly inside but when we set him out he is in a canary type cage.
I got my two doves 11 years ago from a friend who got them at a flea market for my 10th birthday. I'm not exactly sure what their ages are since they were already big in size when I got them. One is gray with red eyes and the other is light brown with honey brown eyes. They are sweet to me but they fight with each other so much that we had to put them in individual cages. I have high hopes they will live another decade or so. They are so energetic and adorable little guys. :)
Thanks for sharing. I'm wondering if you have two males. Do they ever lay any eggs? That would explain the fighting if it were two males. Do you have any videos of them?
I have 2 doves. A male ring neck dove named Della (thought girl at first and my first dove was Perry Peace hence Della). And my other dove I believe is a Eurasian Collared dove named Peetie. I inherited her from my mom. Perry Peace lived 10 years but got some sort of tumor twords end of life. I seldom let my doves out together because Della bites at Peetie hard. However I have 2 cockatiels too. The younger one loves to snuggle with Della and preen his feathers! Its very sweet to see.
Dave Sherva very true! Ivory my young cockatiel will say hello baby and do wolf call at small animals like hamsters. Except Hernan. He was last hamster but had distinctive strong scent to him I think Ivory resented.
They are actually sweet birds and quite amusing. Sadly I was allergic to one and it went to a woman who owned a ton of them. They are good birds to have. One warning, they are messy and they crap as big as cats or small dogs
I own four ring necks. My pair mulan (brown) and mushu (white) were sitting on an egg and I didn’t notice after 6 days. I was about to chuck out the egg because they usually lay infertile eggs but I decided to candle it and there was a baby growing! so ya know I put back the egg and am waiting for a baby to hatch :)
16 years ago I found one out in my horse corral , it must have been attacked by a Crow because it had a broken wing and under its wing it had been badly bitten. I used neosporin under the wing and the bite wound healed up good , but the broken wing did not mend well , so I've had my little friend 16 years , not sure how old the ring neck dove was to begin with. Really good bird , it finally let's me Pat it on the head and gently Pat it's back. I named this little sweetie 》 Dover. Not sure if it's male or female. It doesn't matter.
Eurasian collared doves are not native in the U.S. In Colorado it is open season, kill as many as you can as often as you can. They were introduced in the U.S. in the 1980's according to WikiPedia. They are aggressive to native species and they have an irritating, annoying call. They are an Asian species, right along with the Ring Neck Pheasant.
John Christensen look I know you guys are in the shooting processed and everything but I come on here and I find each videos I don't like the comments about shooting them bird they are very peaceful and calm and I really enjoy them please if you ever see me coming to this video again just know that I am there and not to mention another thing about shooting doves and if you do see your comment from me you know that you are not allowed to mention anything about that I am hurting just listening to this and I'm going down more comments and I'm here in people saying all you can eat them they have fat
I have a male and a female for over two years love them so much they have had so many eggs and we have 4 of the babies but this time I saw a big difference. In the way that babies been taking care of and I had to put one out it didn't make it and the other looks like it's weak I don't thing it's going to make it because it's week and the dad and mom are ot feeding the bird . My question to you is should I take it out and say goodbye. And do the birds know if the baby is going to die because it wants to be feed put no has no energy to hold its head up
I just at rescued my dove that was out of the nest she’s with me for about almost 2 weeks now I was wondering if I start releasing it in about two months or is that too early?
we have a wild population in my garden it is backed onto over a hundred 5 acer plots so it's a safe haven in a populated area I live in ireland there's at least 4 breeding pairs with 3 healthy chicks from the pair in our garden and iv about counted 8 other youngsters we had a magic view from my room into there nest and saw them hatch, grow and fledge and seem to be doing well it's hard to know who's who now cos this year's chicks feathers are in, im unsure if they stay around all winter I put up boxes but anything could take up residence in them..I read there's only 500 coated breeding wild pairs between Europe and Asia, none of these birds have rings.
That is awesome. What color are they ? I'm very curious if they will stay for the winter. Sounds like you live in a pretty neat place. I know we have some wild population in Florida but it stays warm there all year around. Thanks for sharing.
Hey mate I have 1 ringneck dove on its own I don't know the sex of him as I rescued him from a shelter. He lives in a very large cage and I was wondering if I could put some Australian zebra finches in there as company plus I just love them. Thanks
wow... they can live up to pretty long... I'm thinking of buying one, but being currently studying and in an apartment (for during my studies), I'm sure I would be ready for the time investment (and I don't know if birds are allowed... I pretty much only know that cats are).
I had a diamond dove who was born normal. But after 6 year's her top beak started going to the right and her bottom went to the left. She died because at that point she couldn't eat her food no more. I'm curious if it was the seeds or a health condition. I'd love your opinion on this!
A couple of those come visit me every day at lunch, i give them bread or rice. Should i feed them so often? I'm aftraid they might become too dependent and stop searching for food by themselves? They disappear for some months near spring and when they return they look very thin, also when they returned this year, the male had a wound on his chest.
My dove ( about 5 years old ) is not using her left leg. Happened overnight .. she fine otherwise.. eating and flying very well . Any idea what could cause it ? She does lay eggs too
Nice video for those considering getting a Dove. Minnesota? Me too. I keep my 3 in an indoor Aviary 3D x 4H x 6L. I try to let them out everyday. They love to stay in my home office, on my keyboard, desk, shoulder, my hand, etc... always near me or on me. They are about 8 yr now. I also have Pigeons and Chickens. One Pigeon, Simon, 13 yrs old Modena (retired), now gets to permanently live in the house loose in the Family Room. He is a important member of our family, my constant companion, even goes camping with us. The Pigeons and Chickens have an outdoor solar heated Aviary, free to roam the yard. . . You may? be interested in an indoor Dove Door I made? I will post it here soon. I also made special perches for the birds to be free in the house. Easy to clean.
Bert that is awesome. I would love to see those dove doors and perches you make. Has that pigeon always been attached to you like that ? That's neat. I love doves and pigeons just great birds.
My bird is 17 years old. Her female companion died a month ago and now she is limping like her friend did before passing. I worry that she is going down the same path. How can I help her to live longer?
I'm thinking about getting a bird, and doves seem like a good way to go. My question is, since I am starting college soon and will be out of the house 6-8 hours a day, should I get two birds instead of one? I've heard they will bond with each other more than me if I do that, but I'm more concerned about the bird's health than how close it is to me. If I have two doves, will they still bond with me? I definitely don't want them breeding, so should I get two females or two males together? I only have the room for one cage, so I'd prefer if they are able to be housed together. While I would prefer males, would they fight? Very helpful video, by the way.
Thanks for the comment. Doves are fantastic pets. If you get two then go with two females. Males will fight. You will want to handle them and give them attention. If your going to be in a dorm they may be a little noisy. I keep mine outside for half the year in a outdoor enclosure. You can see it in my breeding ringneck doves video. One bird would be fine as long as you gave it daily attention. They also shed a feather dust and their feathers during moult. Not the cleanest bird but probably the calmest and easy to train pet bird around.
+Dave Sherva Dog dander and cat dander trigger my asthma really bad. Do you know how hypoallergenic the feather dust is, or is it triggering for asthma/allergy sufferers?
+Hearseman Casey Great question, I have known two people that had to get rid of their doves due to asthma. I live in MN and keep the doves inside during the winter and that dust is pretty heavy. If you kept them outside you may be fine. I also keep homing pigeons and same thing real dusty. Hope this helps.
Dave Sherva awh that's too bad. They seem like the perfect breed for me other than that. But yes, my asthma and allergies wouldn't be able to withstand it. Any other birds you know of similar to the disposition of the dove and pigeon variety? Thanks for your reply. Love your animals, and I appreciate the videos!
Hello hope you come across this comment but i plan on getting a pair of ring neck doves later this week but the people im getting them from have more than 50! how can i tell a male and female? i really want to get a pair 💕
If they have 50 they should have some that have paired up I would think. It's the behavior and sounds or lack of sounds to tell the difference. Females are quiet and generally more mellow. The males will be louder and act like bullies. My males feet were a little more purple in color than the females. You really have to watch them act with each other.
Are they okay to get even if you aren't home 8 hours a day? I'm a student but I'm really interested in getting one. Do they need to be in pairs? Because I'm not really interested in breeding. Thanks!
I work full time as well and just work with the doves when I get home. You would be fine with a dove as a pet. If you have a large enough cage two females would be a good choice. They do breed like crazy so I would not get a a pair.
Sarah Allen Before I had a dove which lived long (was older than me) and he hadn't any mate during his whole life, so I guess it's okay to just pick one. However, he never was all alone for a long time.
Thanks for the video! this was very helpful. I plan to get an Orange ring neck dove in just a few weeks, and I was curious: Is there any difference in the attitude, from white to orange? Also I live in New England, and was a little concerned about the cold weather, Are there any tips you can give on keeping them comfy during the winter season?
There is no difference in personalities between colors. The key is spending time with them and gaining their trust. It's easier if the bird is young. You can not keep doves outdoors during the winter. They must be brought inside once it gets below 50F. Pigeons are a different story and can be kept outside but not doves.
Is all doves as calm and tame as the ringneck doves? I was thinking about getting some pure white doves would they be as calm? Also do you let your ringneck doves out for free fly? thank you
Doves are naturally calm and make fantastic pet birds. I do let mine free fly. I keep mine outside in a avairy during the summer. I would say they are the easiest bird to finger train because they are not nervous like parakeets or lovebirds.
+Dave Sherva: Yes. I got the 31 yr. old when he was 3 months old. He and his mate had a son who is now 32. The female died at 16 when she got egg bound. They have lived in my house's sleeping porch, so have been free to fly all of their lives. Plus, in the past 10 years, I have had a remarkable avian vet who has helped keep the birds healthy.
There are many beautiful Ringneck doves in need of homes in shelters and rescues all over the US. Please- don't buy, don't breed- adopt! (Replace real eggs with fakes for hatch control- see more info here: www.pigeonrescue.org/about/downloads/)
I agree Elizabeth that a person should always check the shelters first. Good point on the fake eggs. If people are looking for those. I bought mine at Micheal's craft store for about 25 cents a piece.
I have never owned a bird, on this level, in my life! I've always owned chickens and since last march, I have become an owner of two lovely, but ridiculously easily shy and fearful male ducks! LOL! But, with that said, I am really, REALLY contemplating getting a ringneck dove. Now, I know they are illegal to have, but I would rather have a mourning dove. But, since they are protected by federal law, a ring neck doves seems right up my ally! However, again, I've never owned a bird of this magnitude and level before. I've been reading up on the care and all of that for a few days now. I believe I want a female ringneck only because I feel like she would be quieter and easy to train (I gotta learn how to train an animal period! LOL!), and easy to bond, clean after, all of that. So, are there any tips for a newbie like me that I may not have read up on?
I like females because they are not as loud and vocal. Doves are not like a screaming parrot but do laugh and coo. As far as temperament both males and females make great pets.
Please someone i need your help my ring neck dove was attacked by a cat 2 days ago and he was wounded on the back(between his wings).the wound isnt deep but it covers like 2×2cm square. and since then he didnt eat a single wheat.I tried to handfeed him but after a while he started to vomit and all the food i forced him to eat was out(i fed him some boiled non oiled rice too)😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭and now he even doesnt drink his water.i cant even take him to the vet for all of them are closed cuz of this covid19 problme. Anyone please i dont know whatto do and he is going to die😭😭😭😭😭

@@DaveSherva okay thank you
Are they okay to get even if you aren't home 8 hours a day? I'm a student but I'm really interested in getting one. Do they need to be in pairs? Because I'm not really interested in breeding. Thanks!
I work full time as well and just work with the doves when I get home. You would be fine with a dove as a pet. If you have a large enough cage two females would be a good choice. They do breed like crazy so I would not get a a pair.
Thank you! What would I with the eggs? Would they get aggressive if I take them out of the enclosure?
If they lay eggs you can just toss them or replace them with fake wooden eggs and eventually they will stop sitting on them.
Cool! Thanks for answering all my questions haha.
Sarah Allen Before I had a dove which lived long (was older than me) and he hadn't any mate during his whole life, so I guess it's okay to just pick one. However, he never was all alone for a long time.
Great video dave
I love ur info hi from adelaide Australia ps I have a tame ring neck dove :)
Does it hurt when they bite or attack with the sharp beak
RUclips geek Doves are actually soft billed and rarely bite. They will use their wings in defense.
Where did you get your dove? Are you still happy with it?
My guys live in New England. I keep them in doors. They have personalities..one climbs.on me and will climb on my head.
Very sweet.
And how can i tell if my ringneck dove is female or male? Thanks
The boys make a lot of noise and tend to have darker feet. You have to watch their behavior to really tell.
My dove is 32 and his father lived to be 31.
That is amazing! Have you owned the birds their whole lives? Thanks for sharing.
Thanks again for the comment. You are obviously taking great care of your doves.
We have a 4month old dove uhh what it is the proper food for them to eat and how many times do we have to feed them a day? Thanks :)
Good morning, that's a great question. I have a video that's all about feeding them. Check it out here ruclips.net/video/yo8U9T7On3M/видео.html
Dave Sherva Hello Good morning, thank you appreciated.

Have you ever eaten them? I have lots of them in my yard, I talked to a game and fish guy and he says I can shoot them year round here in AZ because they are an invasive species to AZ... I was actually looking for a video on cooking them, but now you say they are pets and somewhat lost my appetite... Help me get it back!
