    I raised an orphaned mourning dove once. He grew to full maturity and had total freedom of the house and was free to leave at any time. He stayed with us for several months and was quite attached to all the people in the house. Eventually he left home and found a girlfriend and started raising babies of his own. Every now and then other doves get into my screened in patio and I have to capture them and gently show them the door. Some have been captured (very gently) so often by me that they don't even try to flee. "Oh, it's him. He'll take me outside and put me near the bird feeder, no problem." I once walked into the yard and picked one up that wasn't even inside the enclosure. Totally free, not trapped or injured. It just knew it had nothing to fear from me, having been captured and released a few times before, apparently.

      You are not keeping the population stable, many more die each year than are born, so they are now a protected species. Laws have not kept up with the loss of population. You just need to google it to learn what is happening.

    • @FordFan01
      @FordFan01 7 лет назад

      exploring life actually, they breed pretty quickly and In many numbers. Say what you want but that's fact.
      "The dove population in the Western United States remains stable at about 43 million birds, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s annual Mourning Dove Population Status report released earlier this month. Hunters shot 1.3 million doves in the West (677,000 in California) last season or about 3 percent of the estimated population.
      When compared to the rest of the country, Western hunters shot fewer birds on average and a smaller percent of the total population. On a national basis, the USFWS estimates there are 274 million mourning doves in the nation, and about 13.8 million were taken by hunters last year (about 5 percent of the total population). This is in spite of an increase in the daily limit from 10 to 15 birds and an increase in the possession limits from 20 to 45."

      Saaaame. I just found out today and started watching many videos about Mourning Doves! They're here in Maryland mainly in the Spring and Summer and some are still here in the Fall. I believe that it's mating season, so I'm hearing and seeing them more often now. Anyways, I heared a mourning dove and went outside under my balcony to see if one was under the balcony (because every year, a Mourning Dove or an American Robin comes to the nest and lay their eggs). Turns out, there were two of them! I came out three times thinking they were fighting. I came inside and heard the "owl" so close by. I started thinking about it, and it would make since that since the Mourning Doves were so close by, it would be them and I was like "Wait, are they not owls!?" And I was thinking that since the birds were together, they were probably mating. I got curious I looked up, "Do Doves makes sounds when they mate?" (I know, that is the weirdest question) and there was a video of a Mourning Dove calling for other birds to mate with and it was the same exact sound as the "owl". I was really shocked and went around telling everyone jaja. I can still hear the Doves cooing rn.

When a dove blinks, I would say that's the bird's way of trying to think (ponder) what we're all about. Lovely video! How did you get the dove to be there when you were there, instead of flying away? That would seem to be the first hurdle > the bird trusting enough to stay, or coming when you were already there, instead of staying away from us. Doves come into my yard, but when I open the door, they leave. How can I have them there when I am there? Please share details of How-To. Thank you! :)

      Pregnant? Are you crazy ? Birds do not get their belly round when they have an egg inside. It is rather a result of you giving him biscuits which is an awful food for any bird.

    I used to feed two small ones everyday until i started seeing two birds of prey flying around the neighborhood. One disappeared first and after a week the other one 😔, i just hope the last one escaped to a safer place and if it's not then i feel so bad about it.

      Seems like bicuits crumbes or peanuts, but both harm a lot any bird's health! Look at how fat he is. Doves are normally feed with graines like wheat, corn

    Pigeons and Doves (close genetic relatives btw, basically the same bird) have historically been kept domestically for centuries, so a bit of human-animal relations is baked into their genetics.
